What is the Cowboys’ coaching staff thinking?
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...is-the-dallas-cowboys-coaching-staff-thinking

...And yet, I’m very befuddled by certain personnel decisions made by the Cowboys’ coaching staff. We’ll start with Jeff Heath; I simply don’t understand why the coaching staff continues to start Heath over other options at safety. I have nothing against Heath. His personal story is a terrific one. He showed up at the Cowboys’ 2013 training camp an undrafted free agent and made enough of an impression to earn a roster spot. There are less than 1,700 NFL roster spots available to the world’s population. Thus I have serious admiration for any individual who makes the commitment and dedication necessary to defy immense odds to procure one of those very limited spots. Jeff Heath has parlayed that opportunity into an extended NFL career. Good for him; I think that’s terrific.

Heath is 26-years-old and in his fifth full season with the Cowboys. He’s started a total of 15 games and has logged almost 1,500 defensive snaps. That’s enough time and enough snaps to to come to firm conclusions about his abilities as a player. By my (admittedly ignorant) evaluation Heath does not appear to be a legitimate NFL starting safety.

Heath has definitely failed fan’s “eye test” as a starter in 2017 leading to articles like this: Jeff Heath certainly earned the chance to become the starting safety for the Dallas Cowboys. But poor tackling, inconsistent play and having no impact in causing takeaways will likely land him back in his special teams role soon. If so, sixth round rookie Xavier Woods seems primed to be his replacement...

For me this started at the sitting all the starters the week we wrapped everything up week off before the playoffs all the way through the offseason signings or non signings continuing through the whole Moore fiasco and ending with some of the Personnel decisions on this team.

I just struggle to understand it.
I mean I've never been complete agreement with any coaching staff including Tom and Jimmy but my disagreements with them were rare not on a weekly basis LOL

I think he will take a huge play by Woods to take the spot. Like a pick 6 or big fumble (that we recover). Once he makes a huge play it will happen

I agree with you about taking week 17 off when we had a bye....terrible decision.

The big thing hurting this team is this legal witchhunt the league has for Zeke. No matter what people say we aren't allowed to fully focus and concentrate week to week.

Add in the fact we changed up the secondary and dealing with injuries and suspensions on the defense hurts. Plus having 3 guys working in on the OL and Tyron battling back issues.

Last year we could just play with little distractions and no big expectations as we had a bunch of rookies leading the team.

It is interesting. Several positions of question.

Heath over Woods
Green over Cooper
Moore over Rush
Carroll over anyone
Williams over Butler
Morris over McFadden
Mayowa over anyone

Some good news though recently. Seems like Cooper may have secured the spot at LG, Rush is in over Moore today and Carroll is gone. Supposedly going to be more mixing and matching in secondary today so maybe Woods will get a chance to make a play.

For the most part I agree it's just that we can come out and be aggressive on defense and get sacks and dominate people and then for whatever reason the minute we get a little ahead we go to this total soft crap it drives me nuts

We have a hard time at adjustments. We did great at Arizona but have struggled in most games adjusting. I have also noticed at end of the games Rod calls soft for example against GB. We didn't attack we sat back afraid to get beat and they went right down the field

I know this is about Heath but linebacker situation was in the same boat. Everyone is rooting for jaylon, but we are a linebacker away from being 4-1. Granted that is more of a depth situation because of injury, but it seems like more could have been done.

And that's what I'm afraid Rod will do today he got a Young quarterback who if you put under pressure is going to make mistakes but I'm scared to death Rod going to drop 8 and give him all day to pick us apart

A healthy linebacker other than smith and we win rams and packers game for sure. They dang near won it without one.

Also, and ... and If some penalties had gone our way, and we had scored more points and the coaches had not cast mean looks at Jason Garrett we win. Suddenly we are suddenly undefeated and on our way to the Super Bowl!!!!

So poor line backing play wasnt a major key to those two losses, when both their rushing attacks were exploiting space and lack of speed to get to the ball on the second level?

To place two loses at our lousy linebacking is absurd. Linebacking could not have scored many points for us or stopped their passing. Simplistic narrow accounting in multifaceted games.

Think the guy makes a pretty easy point to see.

We were destroyed on the ground because our linebackers were awful- Jaylon Smith has, at times, looked like the worst linebacker in the league (and I am pulling for the guy to be good, just being honest).

With good linebacking play we have a better record. It’s simple really.

And with great rushing yardage, we win. And with sizzling performances by our WRs we win two more games. It really is a crapshoot. Its a combination of things. To pinpoint one position and lament the could haves is quite naive. But fans are like that.

I applaud the, for several personnel decisions made yesterday.

Mayowa inactive was a good start.

Continuing to play Cooper at left guard was another one. I hope any debate has finally been out to rest.

Giving Woods more time is a positive.

Ash giving you the big body along with Price inside.

And hopefully, Rush is active over Moore going forward too.

I like what they're doing.
