Today in Strangeness: November 17th...

On this day in 1790, mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius was born. He's remembered today for creating the curious topological surface called the Möbius strip. It was on November 17, 1968 that NBC famously outraged football fans by cutting away from the final minutes of a Raiders-Jets game to air the TV special, "Heidi," on schedule. Maverick catastrophist Immanuel Velikovsky died (1979) and the American Theosophical Society was formed (1875).

Möbius strip: a one-sided surface that can be constructed by affixing the ends of a rectangular strip after first having given one of the ends a one-half twist.
This space exhibits interesting properties, such as having only one side and remaining in one piece when split down the middle. The properties of the strip were discovered independently and almost simultaneously by two German mathematicians, August Ferdinand Möbius and Johann Benedict Listing, in 1858.

Scientists Send Message to ETs:

Rather than wait for aliens to find us, a bold scientific project recently sent a message into space with the hopes that it will be heard by intelligent ETs.
Researchers with the Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence organization announced that they beamed the binary-coded missive via radio waves last month.

The target for the message is a star known as 'GJ 273,' which is believed to be orbited by a planet which could harbor life and is only 12 light-years from Earth. Contained within communique, astronomers at METI explained, are a rudimentary explanation of various mathematical concepts, insights into how humans measure time, and 33 songs. ...(Hopefully including the song "In-a-gadda-da-vida" by Iron Butterfly, which was originally called "In the Garden of Eden.":D)

Although the message, due to reach GJ 273 around 2029, sparks the imagination, not everyone thinks that declaring our presence to ETs is necessarily a good idea. A number of prominent astronomers have criticized the effort because it could wind up alerting hostile aliens to our presence here on Earth, while others argued that the METI group does not have the right to 'speak' for the planet.

Despite their objections, the METI project moved ahead with the plan and now, regardless of how one felt about the message being sent in the first place, the proverbial genie is out of the bottle.
For their part, the scientists who broadcast the 'call to ETs' insist that the effort was largely a test run for future types of communication attempts using stronger signals.

To that end, METI president Douglas Vakoch mused to Space.com that "the big success of the project will come if, 25 years from now, there's someone who remembers" that there may be an incoming alien message.
For the sake of the scientists who just sent the message, we also hope that if the response from ETs is to invade the Earth in 2041, everyone will have long since forgotten that they are the ones who caused the whole mess.

Sneaky beagle steals food straight from the oven:

Dogs are so funny the way they scrounge for any type of food they can get their paws on. Even if they are well-fed, they will do pretty much anything to get another snack. This silly beagle will even get into the 325-degree oven if it means more food. Check out this unbelievable video to see how this canine maneuvers her way to the food.

14.) Sex

Sex in dreams can simply be an outlet for sexual expression. But dreams about sex can also symbolize intimate connections with one’s self and others, and the figurative integration of new information.
Sex dreams can symbolize intimacy and a literal desire for sex. Or they may demonstrate the unification of unconscious emotions with conscious recognition, showing a new awareness and personal growth.

On Jan.15 1961 the U.S.A.F. early warning radar station TT-4(Texas Tower #4) located about 75 miles S.E. of Coney Island, was overturned & destroyed in a gale, apparently having been struck by a MONSTER WAVE at least 85' in height, oddly making it one of the first documented MONSTER WAVESo_O

Today in Strangeness" November 20th...

On November 20, 1820 an 80 ft. sperm whale attacked the Essex, an American whaling ship, 2,000 miles off the coast of South America. The 80-ton whale's impact put a hole in the Essex causing the ship to capsize, though the crew managed to escape to another vessel. Herman Melville's classic 1851 novel "Moby Dick" was inspired by this famous maritime disaster.

Strange Ring-Shaped UFO Photographed in China:

A man vacationing in China was astounded when he looked at the photos from his trip and noticed that two of the images featured a bizarre UFO shaped like a doughnut. John Chen took the puzzling photograph as he was admiring the breathtaking scenery during a visit to China's picturesque Lake Dian.

Upon returning home to Taiwan, he was admiring the photos from his adventure when he spotted something truly odd in a pair of images in the collection.
Seemingly suspended in the air is a dark object shaped like a ring with distinct ridges around the outside of the circle.

The awestruck Chen says that he did not notice the weird anomaly in the sky at the time and, unfortunately, photos taken by his friends during the trip to Lake Dian did not feature the UFO.

As to what it might be, aside from an alien craft or a well-crafted hoax, some have speculated that it looks like a very large tire, ostensibly either crashing down to Earth or tossed up in the air.

Since, presumably, falling debris would have created a splash in the lake that would have caught Chen's attention and it is hard to fathom how it could have thrown to where it is seen in the image, the nature of the object truly is a mystery.

Inmate's Ghost Filmed at Prison in England?:

A pair of paranormal researchers in England suspect that they may have captured footage of an apparition lurking in an old prison.
The spooky video in question was recorded at the Bodmin Jail by Tony Ferguson and his wife, Bev, during an investigation earlier this week.

During their visit, Tony purportedly put the camera down for a moment and, as luck would have it, it briefly caught a glimpse of an odd anomaly resembling a person crossing through a hallway. The spirit in question seems to sport white hair and can be seen clearly moving rather than appearing stationary.

As is often the case with tales of this kind, Tony says that only he and his wife were only people in the building at the time and neither of them could have been the source for the mysterious event. Given the setting for the sighting, there are likely a number of potential candidates for who the ghost may have been, if it truly was an apparition.

To that end, Tony speculated that the spirit was that of the last man to be executed at the prison over a century ago.
Strangely, when they later asked the staff at the jail to check their security cameras to possibly get a second look at the oddity from another angle, there was nothing unusual found in the footage.

Skeptics will, no doubt, point to that fact as evidence that the 'spirit' was probably just an insect or fleck of dust, although paranormal enthusiasts might say that expecting a ghost to be caught on film twice in one night might be too much to ask.

The great archaeological find, the "Piltdown Man," discovered in 1912, was revealed be a hoax on this date in '53.
Edison announced his invention of the hand cranked cylinder phonograph dubbed the "talking machine" (1877)-- Mary Had a Little Lamb was the first recording made for it. Also on this date, Bob Atheney began bowling for 265 hours spread over 11 days ('75), and the Freedom of Information Act was passed into law ('74).

Scientists Issue Worrisome Earthquake Warning for 2018:

Scientists have discovered what they say is a correlation between major earthquakes and the Earth's rotation which seems to spell trouble for 2018.
In a recently published paper, a pair of scientists detailed how, while studying data on magnitude 7 or higher earthquakes since 1900, they spotted five periods in which the disasters occurred with unusual frequency.

An attempt to find some connection to these curious outliers eventually led to them to notice that each of these earthquake spurts appeared to happen five years after the Earth's rotation had slowed. Even though the change is imperceptible to humans, it apparently has a dramatic effect on seismic activity, the scientists argue, although they concede that the reason why remains a mystery.

Nonetheless, the researchers say that the relationship is quite apparent and that their findings come at a particularly important and worrisome time.
That is because 2017 marks the fourth year in the five-year 'warning period' that their data suggests pre-dates an increase in massive earthquakes rocking the planet.

As such, one of the authors of the paper issued the ominous prediction that there could be up to 20 such events next year.
Considering that this assessment comes from mainstream scientists rather than, say, Nibiru conspiracy theorists, the chilling prediction is one which should be taken quite seriously.

Unfortunately, little can really be done about it other than to be prepared for disaster, since knowing exactly where and when major earthquakes will occur continues to elude scientists.

However, should the planet be shaken violently several times next year, at least we'll know that it probably isn't Planet X to blame and that, instead, the cause of the commotion came from Earth itself.

'Time Traveler' Shares Revelations from the Future:

An odd video circulating online features a man claiming to be a time traveler and purportedly sharing details about events which will unfold in the next few years. The self-proclaimed 'future man,' obscured via a digital distortion to both his voice and face in the footage, calls himself 'Noah' and says that he came to 2017 from the year 2021.

"It is not my intent to deceive anybody. My sole objective is to prove to you that time travel exists in the next few years," he begins the video
This leads to Noah's dramatic declaration that "in fact, I, myself, am a time traveler."

He then proceeds to weave a fantastic tale about how time travel was discovered in 2003, but has been kept secret and only used by "top secret organizations." Things then take a dark turn when Noah breaks down sobbing about how his 'natural' year is 2021, but that he "got fired," ostensibly from the time traveling business, and wound up being stuck in 2017.

After presumably being given some time to collect himself, he moves on to share some future events in order to prove time travel exists.
Unfortunately, his 'revelations' are not particularly remarkable and include 'stunning' insights about 2021 like "electric cars and self-driving cars will become
dramatically improved" and "people are spending a lot of time in virtual reality."

Noah also indicates that there will be a new device akin to Google Glass and Donald Trump will be re-elected in 2020.
He wraps up the video by thanking people for listening and, in true time traveler fashion, wishes everyone "the best future."

While Noah's testimony is quite compelling, viewers of the video would be wise to watch the footage with a healthy dose of skepticism.
For starters, one would hope that a time traveler trying to prove that they come from the future would provide better evidence than a handful of vague insights that anyone could predict today.

Additionally, although Noah's decision to distort his voice and face via rudimentary video editing provides dramatic effect in the video, it also requires quite the stretch of the imagination.

If the 'man from 2021' is to be believed, time travel has existed for the last 14 years, yet the nefarious organizations intent on keeping it a secret are also
somehow unable to decipher a simple digital disguise.

The incongruous nature of these two scenarios, along with other suspicious details about the story such as Noah's youthful appearance, strongly suggest that his entire tale is likely a not-so-clever hoax.

That said, since one can never be quite sure when it comes to time travelers, we wish him the best future and hope that he can find a way back to 2021 without having to wait four years like the rest of us.

Flat Earth Fan Hopes to Fly in Homemade Rocket:

A Flat Earth enthusiast who built his own rocket plans to put his vessel to the test this weekend with a daring launch over a California ghost town.
The colorful character behind the stunt is "Mad" Mike Hughes, who works primarily as a limo driver but sees himself as more of a self-taught rocket scientist.

Using mechanical knowledge he has acquired over the years and various pieces of scrap metal, Hughes has built a steam-powered rocket which, all told, cost around $20,000 to create. Having recently completed construction on the craft, he hopes to take to the sky this Saturday when the rocket launches with him aboard.

Lest one scoff at Hughes' chutzpah, this weekend's event will actually his second such stunt as he successfully traveled over 1,300 feet back in 2014 using a similar homemade rocket. Hughes hopes to vastly improve on that feat this weekend when he climbs into his new rocket and the craft is anticipated to send him soaring for a mile across the sky as a speed of around 500 miles per hour.

Beneath the craft on the ground will be the California ghost town of Amboy which, God willing, will not have another spirit living there when Hughes' rocket eventually hits the ground. Should the test be successful and Hughes make it through the launch unscathed, he envisions eventually creating a craft which can take him high enough in space to accomplish a rather peculiar goal: the prove the Earth is flat.

Indeed, the ardent advocate for the controversial conspiracy theory is actually sponsored, in part, by members of the Flat Earth research community.
To that end, Hughes' rocket will feature branding emblazoned on the side of the craft which is all too familiar to anyone who has followed the quirky conspiracy theory in recent years: the seemingly-ubiquitous slogan 'Research Flat Earth.'

Eerie Anomaly Photographed in UK:

A UK man suspects that he may have inadvertently photographed the spirit of a former tenant still lingering in his brother's home.
Unable to sleep one night earlier this month, Luke Jackson went to head outside for a cigarette when he heard footsteps coming from downstairs.

Perplexed by the unexplained sounds, he used his cellphone to snap a picture in the hopes that the camera's flash would literally shed light on things.
Jackson was subsequently stunned when he looked at the image on the phone and spotted what appears to be a fairly distinct, full-bodied apparition lurking
at the bottom of the stairs.

The eerie anomaly left him scratching his head and wondering what, besides a ghost, could account for what was captured by the camera.
However, since the previous tenant of the home was an older woman who actually passed away a little over a year ago, Jackson is convinced that he photographed her spirit.

Skeptics will undoubtedly argue that the anomaly in the image is a trick of light and shadow or a clever hoax.
The latter explanation seems somewhat unlikely unless Jackson was simply hoping to scare his brother into thinking that the house was haunted and the prank took on a proverbial life of its own.

Indian Man Ingests Incredible Number of Coins and Nails:

A seemingly routine examination looking for the source of a man's stomach ache turned into an astounding extraction surgery for doctors in India.
Maksud Khan showed up at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital complaining about stomach pains, which those treating him initially thought could have been caused by food poisoning.

However, when they performed an endoscopy on their suffering patient, they were stunned to discover a veritable junk drawer inside of him.
Incredibly, contained in Khan's stomach were a whopping 263 coins, 100 nails, and an assortment of razor blades, stones, and pieces of glass.

Doctors say that the clearly troubled man had actually eaten all of these objects, which weighed a jaw-dropped seven pounds total, over the course of the last few months. According to a surgeon who removed all of the material, Khan is incredibly lucky that he finally decided to seek medical treatment after weeks of agony.

That is because the ingested nails had begun to pierce his stomach and, if left untreated, would have assuredly caused his demise.
Fortunately, Khan has now recovered from his misadventure and says that he has no plans to resume his bizarre diet.
Considering that he likely missed work due to the surgery, let's hope that he was allowed to keep all those coins. (...?...Strange snack indeed!)

Interstellar Asteroid Astounds Astronomers:

For the first time ever, astronomers have observed an object that entered our solar system from the outside and the odd asteroid is quite remarkable.
Spotted by researchers in Hawaii, the weird 'visitor' boasts a strange, elongated shape where the quarter-mile length of the asteroid appears to be around ten times its width.

This is particularly amazing to astronomers who say that the ratio is seven times greater than anything seen in the past.
Although such objects have long been theorized to exist coming into and out of solar system, the newfound asteroid constitutes confirmation of that hypothesis.

Researchers are now scrambling to observe the asteroid since they believe it could provide tremendous insight into the formation of objects around stars other than our sun. In a nod to the location from which the asteroid was discovered, it was given the name 'Oumuamua, which is Hawaiian for "messenger from afar arriving first."

UFO enthusiasts concerned that perhaps the interstellar object is not an asteroid at all and, in fact, an alien invader can rest easy knowing that 'Oumuamua is already headed away from the Earth and en route to leave our solar system in the next few years. So either the object really is an asteroid that is simply passing through our solar system or the alien scout ship took one look at Earth and concluded that an invasion really wasn't worth the trouble.

Scientists Doubt Discovery of 'Alien' Bacteria Outside the ISS:

Claims by a Russian cosmonaut that 'alien' bacteria was recovered from the outside of the International Space Station are being called into question by scientists. Anton Shkaplerov made news earlier this week when he told the Russian news agency TASS that samples obtained from the exterior surface of the ISS revealed something truly startling.

"It turns out that somehow these swabs reveal bacteria that were absent during the launch of the ISS module," he marveled, "that is, they have come from outer space." Shkaplerov went on to assure the reporter that the 'alien' material posed no danger to Earth and was being studied by Russian scientists.

This revelation caught the attention of imaginative minds who were quick to declare the cosmonaut's quote as an indication that alien life, at long last, may have been found. However, now that the proverbial space dust has begun to settle, skeptical scientists have stepped forward to say 'not so fast.'

They argue that Shkaplerov could be leaping to an alien conclusion about the bacteria when it's more likely to have actually originated on our planet
Their reasoning is that the relatively close proximity of the ISS to the Earth, where we know such organisms exist, as opposed to other worlds in space, where such life has yet to be found, makes our planet the most plausible source for the mysterious microbes.

As to how such material would make its way to the outside of the space station, the prevailing theory is that it was transferred from nearby satellites with an
assist from bacteria's ability to survive in harsh conditions such as space.

And, finally, the dearth of details about the purported discovery as well as the inability of anyone aside from Russian scientists to actually study this bacteria is an indication to many scientists that it is probably not some kind of alien life. Although that may be disappointing to some UFO enthusiasts, they may be able to take solace in the fact that the first ET discovered did not turn out to be something as boring as bacteria stuck on the ISS' windows.

'Invincibility Ritual' Injures Seven:

Seven men in Indonesia who thought they were being instructed on how to become invincible wound up learning a lesson on trusting strangers who make sensational promises. The strange saga began a few months ago when a man calling himself 'Didi' and claiming to be a sorcerer arrived in a village near Jakarta.

Didi told the riveted residents that he was fluent in the ways of magic and that his skills with the dark arts had rendered him impervious to injury.
Clearly his tale was quite convincing as several men in the village recently accepted his offer to learn how he had achieved this feat.

Following some kind of ceremony said to make the men invincible, Didi had them put their newfound 'powers' to the test by rinsing their hands with acid!
Either due to the ritual going awry or, more likely, Didi having simply spun a fantastic yarn for the men, the end result was gruesome as seven of them suffered severe burns from the chemical rinse.

As for the sorcerer, he skipped town soon after the incident and is currently being sought by authorities.
While one can understand the wish to become 'unbreakable,' there is one aspect of the story that is truly mystifying.

According to Indonesian media, Didi did not ask for any money from the men for his services, leaving one to wonder, if it was a nefarious trick, what could have been the motivation behind it. Although we may never know what drove Didi to do what he did, it clear that he's bad at black magic, either as a mystical art or as a grift, since he neither made the men invincible nor made any money.

Serial Cow Killer Haunts Hawaiians:

Cattle ranchers on Hawaii's Big Island say that a sinister individual or group has been killing their cows in a strange fashion for the last few years and that
authorities are unwilling or unable to stop it.

Unlike the infamous cattle mutilation phenomenon, which some suspect could be paranormal in nature, these killings are undoubtedly being committed by human hands. That's because the Hawaiian Cow Killer's modus operandi involves simply shooting the cows with a gun and leaving the bodies behind otherwise untouched.

As to what may be motivating the proverbial 'HCK,' no one knows, although the prevailing theory is that they shootings are some kind of thrill killings akin to those of a human serial killer. One particularly unfortunate rancher lamented that he has lost eight or nine cows to the miscreant in just the last year or so and that his losses are merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the killer's total tally.

Numerous other victims told the newspaper West Hawaii Today that they had also lost cattle in a similar fashion and that the killings have been going on for the around two or three years. However, the true scope of the HCK's killing spree is shrouded in mystery as many in the Hawaiian cattle ranching community have actually stopped
reporting the incidents.

Their reasoning is that law enforcement in the area have been unable to solve the crimes for years and, as such, a growing sense of frustration has swept through the community. "It goes nowhere," one rancher said of police investigations, "they take a picture and since they don’t have any hard evidence of who is doing it, they toss it out.

And, since many of these crimes are now going unreported, police have largely dismissed the notion that there is a serial cow killer on the loose in Hawaii, much to the chagrin of many ranchers. To their credit, authorities say that they cannot pursue the theory that these cases are connected unless they are told about them and, thus, called on victimized ranchers to report the crimes.

One should hope that the stalemate can be fixed, since some in the region have expressed concern that the HCK may move on to killing humans should downing cows no longer provide the same excitement for the nefarious ne'er-do-well.
