Dak Prescott on what he needs to do differently, how Cowboys are approaching Chargers game - Kate Hairopoulos, DMN
It’s strange to be saying that Dak Prescott is a problem, but his play on Sunday left much to be desired. He has to get things turned around immediately for the Cowboys to go anywhere. Here’s how he’s going to get it done.
One of his biggest takeaways is that he needs to be more willing to settle for underneath passes instead of going deep or going to the end zone. A play in particular that stands out was late in the second quarter, third and 6 from the Eagles' 29. Prescott went deep and incomplete to Dez Bryant in the end zone. He could've gone to Cole Beasley crossing underneath instead.
"Me personally I've just got to take some passes underneath and let guys run with the ball in their hands," Prescott said after a short unpadded practice Tuesday. "The game goes back to two or three plays, and you can always say if we would've done this or that on that play it would've been a different game. For me it's just getting the ball out sometimes and trust a short route is going to get as much as a deep ball down the field."

Another problem that needs solving is the second-half woes. The Cowboys are getting smoked in the second half and a lot of people are pointing a finger at the coaching staff. Is Jerry?
"I've seen these coaches to a man make some outstanding adjustments in their time with the Cowboys, so I know that they adjust," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show [KRLD-FM]. "They might not adjust at the right time in a series, they might not adjust at the right time in a ballgame, and obviously they can lose ballgames.
"But this is a really outstanding coaching staff. I'm really proud to have them."

Speaking of Jerry, turns out he’s not going to sue the NFL after all.
Jerry Jones says he's dropped the notion of suing fellow NFL owners over the process for extending Roger Goodell’s contract. But the Dallas Cowboys' patriarch is hardly ready to give up the fight.
“I want accountability,” Jones told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday.
Meaning Jones wants the full body of owners — not just the six-member compensation committee — to finalize the pact and structure of performance bonuses that reportedly could bring the commissioner's annual pay to roughly $50 million.

The good news is that Dallas might get Tyron Smith back.

Obviously Smith represents a huge upgrade in talent over Byron Bell, but he also allows the coaches to shift protection and use more formations.
Having Smith back out there will allow the Cowboys to return to their usual style of pass-protection, freeing them from having to use multiple tight ends on nearly every snap like they did against the Eagles, the better to give both Bell and right tackle La'el Collins additional help. No. 2 tight end James Hanna played a season-high 32 snaps against Philly, No. 3 tight end Geoff Swaim played double-digit snaps for just the fourth time, and slot receiver Cole Beasley saw his snap-share cut to 32, which represented his third-lowest total of the season.

Tyron will be especially welcome this week, given the Chargers resurgent defense.
The Chargers rank third in the NFL in sacks with 30. They had five interceptions and two defensive touchdowns in the 54-24 win over the Bills.

The Chargers had five interceptions in their rout of the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. That’s how many interceptions (five) the Cowboys have on the season. Cornerback Casey Hayward had two. The Chargers are surely looking to keep that trend going against the Cowboys, particularly with Dak Prescott coming off a game in which he was intercepted three times.

Darren McFadden was pretty surprised to see he was inactive last game.
Darren McFadden found out he would be inactive for last Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles just about the same time as everybody else, a few hours before kickoff.
“Surprised the hell out of me,” McFadden said. “But that’s what they decided, man. That’s just what it is right now.”
He might be out again this week, he adds little on special teams and the Cowboys don’t seem inclined to give him carries if he is active.

It’s getting to be a little suspicious how little help the Cowboys are getting from the refs. The zebras have missed two blatant facemask calls on Dak in recent weeks, a few pass interference callas, and the opposition never, ever holds the Cowboys pass rush... it’s a mystery. The Cowboys have the fewest number of penalties and penalty yards called against their opposition in games this season. About those other missed calls...
Yes, you read that right, 29 quarters have passed since an offensive line held a Dallas defensive player. If you have watched any of those 29 quarters you probably saw a handful of holding calls that went uncalled. I’m talking about the obvious, no need for replay, textbook holding calls. This is just the first example of why the Cowboys have a real case.
The next issue has been the lack of pass interference. In the last two games Dez Bryant was destroyed while running a route. At the very least one of those could have been a defenseless player penalty. Yet, nothing was called. Again, these were obvious no replay needed penalties.
The last case would be the myriad of facemask penalties that went uncalled on Dak Prescott and Alfred Morris.

Could Jerry’s fight with the NFL cost AT&T Stadium another Super Bowl? Or will other factors come into play?
AT&T Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV after the 2010 season with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. I wonder when Jerry Jones’ masterpiece will see another Super Bowl. Yes, the NFL awarded the 2018 draft to the Cowboys and AT&T Stadium, but will the fight between the league and Jones, the Cowboys owner and general manager, play a part in the NFL title game coming back to Arlington, Texas? As new stadiums open, AT&T Stadium remains the standard in the NFL. There were issues -- with the weather and a seating fiasco -- when the Super Bowl was played here, but NFL owners like money, and they made a lot. But I don’t believe Jones is as fired up about a Super Bowl coming back in part because he would have to give up a home game in the future with a date either overseas or in Mexico. He’s all for growing the game, but not at the expense of his fan base losing a game. It could be a long time before a Super Bowl comes back to North Texas.
Finally, at least the Cowboys are #1 somewhere.
The Dallas Cowboys have risen to the top team in the NFL according to the DICK’S Sporting Goods Jersey Report.
There has also been some notable player movement on the list as Jason Witten’s jersey ranks No. 32, third-best for a tight end, and Dez Bryant comes in at No. 37, up 20 spots from last week.
