Stephen has fought long and hard to get the Cowboys out of cap hell. The FA trap of overpaying is a sure way to end up back where Jerral had them. I again expect the Cowboys to be VERY prudent in FA.

I understand that. With that said, I think someone like Star Lotulelei would certainly be worth forking up some money for. He's a guy that makes our linebackers job much easier, and he's simply a beast.

The team probably needs to solidify left guard and a valid backup at linebacker and a stud defensive #1 tackle. That wouldn't put a lot of strain on the budget, if Lawrence and Hitchens are retained...

then this could become a consideration later in the draft...

  1. At some point, the Cowboys are going to need to find a younger player to become Ezekiel Elliott's backup.
  2. After the success of the New Orleans Saints with Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara, maybe it's time to consider drafting a running back who can play with Elliott, rather than behind him.
  3. Sony Michel is a part-time player at Georgia, but he's got the skill set to thrive in the NFL as a "slasher" who can be the lightning to Elliott's thunder.

I agree, and targeting free agent money towards him and not a Murray, could be the way to go. Before the draft...as top value picks could then be pursued via the draft.

Exactly, part of the idea of FA is to help make your draft easier. If you can sign one or two quality FAs, then you don't have to worry about that in the draft meaning that your afforded room to maybe splurging on a few more weapoons.

And a guy like Lotulelei can really be a difference maker. We have a talented young defense. However, they have a lot of inexperience as a group. Thus, players such as Lotulelei and Earl Thomas can be difference makers because they can give the defense much needed experience while also making them better as a group. Could they get hurt? Sure, but so can rookies. Sure, we may be forking up some coin for them, but hey, for players like those two, I think it'd be worth it. Just signing those two would make the draft easier and really put some firepower on our defense. Not to mention how much better our TEAM would be as a whole.

I don't expect them to sign any significant free agents. They will follow the same 'Process' of shopping in the bargain bin till Jerry is either dead or too ill to run the team anymore. I mean honestly 23 years since the last SB win and 3 playoff wins, you think we would learn by now.

We really can't afford much after a Lawrence franchise.

We really can't afford much after a Lawrence franchise.

They're actually in okay shape going into the offseason. Nobody's going to be shouting "Holy crap, we're rich," but they've got some wiggle room:

- La'el Collins and Terrence Williams have what look like automatic restructures built into their contracts next year, which will free up several million in cap space without pushing too much into the future
- Extending Martin should cut his 2018 cap figure roughly in half
- Shedding some overvalued contracts on aging on unproductive players should free up an additional several million (Mayowa, Scandrick, Hanna, etc.)

This will give them room to franchise Lawrence and tender all of their RFAs (Irving, Smith, etc.) and still have some money left over for free agency and the draft.

Read that Terrance Williams contract is front loaded, we should let it ride and cut him as a number 2 receiver he's a liability.

I agree but I wonder if they may be a little more aggressive. Certainly don't want to go back to overpaying but maybe pay fair market for the right player. Especially if we were to trade Dez & free up that space .... there are some free agent receivers that intrigue me.

I have thought about him before as well but not sure I wouldn't just draft and save the $'s.

Sounds like Vita Vea is a cheaper alternative, if we can get Terrell Mcclain on the cheap and if he gets cut he will be just that (relative) we should do that. I'm not against signing a stud 1 tech, but the chances of this team doing that is lol, we would rather have high schoolers play the position.

Next year he's easily cut-able.
His base salary is fully guaranteed this upcoming year.
Cutting him before June first would hurt our cap space.
3.5m GTD Salary + 1.25m x 3 prorated hits from his signing bonus.
= 7.25mil dead cap, where this year his cap hit is 4.75m

Cowboys (per OverTheCap dot com) rank 21 of 32 teams when it comes to cap space.

$18.5M for 2018 without Lawrence or Hitchens on the books + other free agents. Can I assume getting the team out of cap hell is following the same process as back to back playoff appearances?
