2018 NFL Mock Draft

19. Dallas Cowboys: Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Dallas developed a formidable pass rush in 2017, but Vea would be able to plug up the middle. Standing at 6-5, 340 pounds, Vea had 43 tackles and 3.5 sacks in his junior season.

Poe or Logan can plug this position at a modest price.......rather go WR (especially if Kirk is there ). We finish the season 8th in total defense. That's playoff level more times than not........

I like the idea of signing a 1 tech and drafting either Wilkins, Bryan, or Hurst in the first round to play 3 tech. If we lose Irving this almost becomes a must.

If the scouts don't have them rated that differently you can probably trade down, pick up a 3rd or 4th, and still get one.

How many believe Vea will still be there at 19?

About half of the teams run a 3-4 defense, and players like DEs, CBs, QBs and WRs are in high demand, so it's not unlikely he'll be around at 19.

But the Cowboys run a 4-3, Vea is a prototypical nose tackle, and at 6-5 he can have a problem with centers and guards getting under his pad level. Cowboys have a 330-plus pound nose tackle, if you feel the need to have some more beef in the middle.

Now if he fell somehow into the third round (unlikely, but you can never tell), might be a good pick.

He's the guy I most want in the draft given our draft position, so naturally he'll be skipped over (ie Floyd).

You have to be insane to want a WR over a blue chip defender.

We need to make this defense elite, to be able to win with Dak

I'll break crap if we use the 19th pick on Kirk.

And I am also going to lose my mind if you guys keep saying we finished 8th in total defense as if that matters. It does not. Because if you look at just about every other stat, including advanced stats like Football Outsiders, the Cowboys defense was decidedly mediocre.

It's the height of silliness to think we now field a Top 10, upper level, almost elite defense and therefore we need to draft a WR in the first round.

This dude will go top 10. DT's are coveted in pro football.

I doubt it. And DTs aren't as highly thought of as you think. No DT was taken in the Top 10 in 2017. The first DT off the board was at 17. No DT was taken in the Top 10 in 2016 either. First DT off the board was at 12. Nor did one go in the Top 10 in 2015. Or 2014.

Vae also isn't the type of DT that would garner Top 10 intrigue. The guys that go there are your quick twitch 3 Tech types who can rush the passer, etc.

Didn't have an elite defense in 2016, and Dak was one of the best QBs in the league that year. I think personally Vea would be the best pick, but if its between him and Ridley, Im taking Ridley

We finish the season 8th in total defense, that's pretty close to elite ........isn't it?

I respectfully disagree, the numbers are what they are.......sure the D had some lapses when Lee was out but overall we played pretty damn good. As for 1st round pick.......as always with me, I thinking of impact players who will be day one starter. With all three of our starting WRs staring 2019 staring free agency or pay cut, this position is critical IMO. I'm not one to go back and to other posters opinion but that just my take.

But wouldn't he only be a two-down player in our system? I don't know.......that why I'm asking.

You can disagree all you want but saying, "hey, we finished 8th in total yards given up, we have a great defense!" is really foolish. Look deeper than just a silly, simplistic stat:

- 13th in points per game
- 16th in sacks
- 17th in takeaways
- 26th in QB passer rating
- 25th in yards allowed per drive
- 17th in points per drive
- 25th in Football Outsiders DVOA defensive rankings

But no logical analysis can one conclude that this defense is borderline elite, certainly not because they are 8th in yards allowed.

Not factoring in free agency, I'd go DT or safety in the 1st and WR in the 2nd. If the desired d-tackle (Vea) or safety (Harrison) are not available, I'd seriously look at the o-tackle (Williams) from Texas.
