1958 championship
Colts v Giants
one of the greatest games ever....because of SUDDEN DEATH.
Its perfect logic.
1st team to score wins.....if you cant stop it....GET BETTER.
Current OT rule where everyone gets a possession is P.C. crap.

No football game has ever been good because of sudden death (and 1958??? Really?). One of the worst rules ever.

What you're saying is only half of a football team matters. So if neither team can stop the other, only one team is penalized? Seriously, think about that for a minute. You want a game to come down to luck more than football capabilities of both teams. That's nuts.

just stop.
everyone doesnt get a trophy.
everyone cant win.
there are winners and losers.
you want everyone to get a hug and some hot coco.....I want the OT period in reg season to go back to the way it was....1st team to score wins.
Im not clogging up this thread anymore with this obvious difference of opinion.
If you dont want to lose by a fg in OT.....STOP THEM.
Your futility should not be rewarded.

No, I want OT to be about the ENTIRE game of football, not just a portion of it. You want a watered down version.

If a team doesn't want the other team to have a shot to win after they scored in OT...STOP THEM!

I'll keep mine simple and sweet:
More practices for all teams, maybe fewer in pads to keep player safety in mind
Marijuana gets a 2 game suspension per occurance
Rosters get bumped to 53 or 55, all players dress, if they are injured they cannot.
Add a disabled list, 4, 8 week and IR.
Home grown players second contracts with team count 80% of signed value
Eliminate Thursday games (NFL network contract) keep the given opening day and Thanksgiving games
Bring back incidental face mask penalties and extend the 5 yard bump rule to 10 yards

you've had 4 Qtrs.
If I win the toss and drive down the field and kick a Fg....why should you get another possession because of your inept defense's inability to stop me.
The true nature of Sudden Death is first team to score wins...be it safety....TD...or Fg.
Thats the way the mop-flops.

you've had 4 Qtrs. So does the OTHER team. Make them do the same thing. This is not a good argument...at all.

If I win the toss and drive down the field and kick a Fg....why should you get another possession because of your inept defense's inability to stop me. If your defense is inept, why should you be shielded from your team's deficiencies? Why coddle them?
The true nature of Sudden Death is first team to score wins...be it safety....TD...or Fg. And in a sport such as football or baseball, when possession is not fluid, it's dumb.
Thats the way the mop-flops.

Illogical. You're catering to the coin flip and not to actual football. It's a TEAM game, that's offense and defense, and to a lesser extent the kicking game. You want to ignore a huge aspect of that for each team. That's not football.

Messing with OT was the worst rule change ever......Sudden Death is the only solution

Football IS Offense, Defense and Special Teams........ not just Offense......... lose the coin flip then play Defense and get the ball back or block the punt...... all 3 facets count......Boo hoo Brett Farve didn't get he ball after throwing 3 picks in regulation

The new OT rules and the College system fundamentally changed the game because the team that goes second gets to use 4 down on every series... the team that goes first does not......THAT IS HUGE

The only problem with the old OT rules was the coin flip.

Replace the coin flip with each HC submitting an index card with the yard line they are willing to take the ball on. The team willing to start backed up the most to their own goal line gets the ball at that spot. Then sudden death. Think your offense deserves a shot?.....then put your money where your mouth is. :D

There is nothing MORE fair than a coin flip

True.

But there's also nothing more arbitrary. The problem people had wasn't fairness, it was the fact that the deciding factor had nothing to do with football.

Flipping a coin to determine the winner would also be "fair".

Every single game starts with a coin flip....how is that arbitrary for OT?

The XFL method was a broken neck waiting to happen

The difference is the opening coin flip is only determining offense/defense or defense/offense....it's not determining offense OR defense.

Don't get me wrong. I'll take the old rules over the new rules. IMO, the most asinine thing about the new rules is the fact that it is still possible for only one team to possess the ball. The #1 reason for changing the rules ... still not addressed.

It was like replay.......... it was put into place to make sure the most egregious calls were corrected

Instead terrible calls still stand and more and more exciting plays are being overturned for technicalities

The NFL is the only league trying to turn TDs and INTs into incomplete passes.....YEAH!!!!! how fun

80yd TDs are marked down at the one inch line and One yard TDs are rewarded if they think the nose of the ball breaks the plane in the middle of the pile-up....... reviewing all scoring plays and turnovers just makes it worse

You admit it is all phases, but then want to limit it based on the coin flip...smh.

No it was happens AFTER the coin flip

Kickoff and coverage is Special Teams
Defense causes a 3 and out and gets good field position after a decent punt return
Then Offense goes down and scores and wins

All 3 parts of the team contribute

Yeah, and that may not be the case if you go back to the dumb sudden death from the get go like it used to be. That was the problem. In many cases it was just offense and FGs (kickoffs are almost pointless in today's NFL), and for the other team just defense. A team may not get a chance to use their strengths, or conversely be forced to manage their weaknesses in those cases. Half the game.

Agree with the part in bold, it's still not what it should be.
