Did the coaching staff ruin Chaz Green?

On all of the draft databases and boards I saw before the draft Green was either considered a very late round pick or an I drafted free agent. Greens problem is that he had unrealistic expectations of him based on being vastly over-drafted.

And he's had injury issues his entire career, including college. Taking him in the 3rd was almost as stupid as taking Esco in the 2nd. Both way overdrafted and just didn't make sense.

maybe he gets so pissed...he bounces back.

anyone??
anyone??

Well that would be great to see but I just don't see it. He never saw another snap even though his replacement in Bell should not of even been on the roster.

Chaz Green was taken in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft at pick 91 which is a premium pick. I did not like the pick at all. For me it wasn't his lack of talent, the guy had talent, it was he could not stay healthy. From high school through college I believe he missed around 1/3 of his starts with a laundry list of injuries. It wasn't like he had a bad knee, shoulder, etc. He had 10+ injuries all over, foot, groin, shoulder, etc. Once again it seems as if the Cowboys drafted a player with a high grade while ignoring his troubling history of injuries. Sure enough he got hurt in his first training camp and missed a lot of time in his first 2 years dealing with various injuries.

With all that said, in 2016 when Tyron missed those 2 games Green came in and did a pretty good job IMO. No one is Tyron but I didn't hold my breath on every snap. Green showed ability and even though he was made of glass at least he was an adequate reserve/swing tackle if healthy.

Fast forward to training camp in 2017 and the Cowboys are trying to figure out how to replace Leary at LG. The coaching staff made an awful decision IMO to try to put Green in at LG. A position that he had never played at any level. Everyone knows the difference in mechanics, technique, etc. is night and day compared to playing tackle. It takes a lot of reps and practice to even attempt the switch unless you are just a superior talent both physically and mentally. So what happens? Sure enough Green gets hurt and Cooper is given the job. So now what do the Cowboys do? They decide that Green despite trying to learn a new position and not getting any reps at tackle, will have no problem re-adjusting to playing LT on the fly if Tryon is hurt. We all know what happened at Atlanta.

I am not absolving Green of what happened at Atlanta. That was all time bad. But I just find it hard to believe that a guy who was a pretty serviceable backup tackle was/is now suddenly Rob Petitti bad. Since he is still under his rookie contract and has never played another snap since what is the plan for this guy? Is he just going to dress out but never play and take up a valuable spot on the 45 man game day roster? I'm not sticking up for this guy as far as thinking he is anything special, but I also think that this coaching staff ruined any chance this guy had to contribute on a team that has no depth, by trying to convert him to guard so they could get the "best 5 guys" on the field.
I have to commend you for putting so much thought into Scrubz Green. I know our staff is well chronicled for dumbing down players... But, in this case, they had zero room to work. Scrubz can't stay on the field and is mentally weak (to match his physical issues). You just can't get any dumber.

We'd have been better off drafting a big mauler type OL in the mid rounds.

We had like no one to give us some decent snaps in a backup role. Poor player evaluation and planning.

Yes, I think they ruined Green!! When your a young player with little playing experience and you get humiliated for 31/2 quarters it can affect you psychologically for a long time. Do any of you want him blocking on Dak's blind side again? There is no excuse for Garrett and Linehan allowing Green to get beat like a drum for 31/2 quarters. They should have been chipping for both Green and Bell throughout the game. This is an example why so many people think Garrett is NOT a Super Bowl caliber coach. Garrett is the problem!!

We waaaaaaay reached to take him in the 3rd - pure panic pick. This franchise makes some idiotic personnel moves.

I never liked the pick because he didn’t stand out on tape at any spot he was playing. Dumb.

I don't know what happened but he went from a solid offensive lineman to the worst football player I think I've ever seen in 1 game.

I'm not so sure about worst. Jaylon and he were neck in neck for a while.....

The whole guard experiment and then back to tackle with no help did him ZERO favors...Green is a player that needs everything to go right to have any chance at success (health especially as the dude was as injury prone as they come and seem capable of hurting himself in warmups)...the combination of our misuse coupled with our inability to keep/get dudes healthy (e.g., constant string of chronically injured players with soft tissue problems) converged mightily with this young man...he's a bust at this point and we should move on.

The footwork at guard is completely different than the footwork at tackle specifically the kickslide is not used at guard as is the step back inside to take away the inside move. He looked like he had not done either for quite some time. Guard is also much more quick hitting. He showed no patience in his punch.

That is on Pollock for not getting him prepared and on Garrett/Linehan for their lack of oversight in how the position competitions were planned.

I think its a lesson learned, the draft is not a science. Way to many varaibles happen from when a player is drafted to the field.

Ruined him, no
Failed to see he was not able to handle his man a failed to get him help, yes
Green has enough talent to be an nfl player if he could just stay healthy
But that’s something he has never done

Did the coaching staff ruin Chaz Green?

I am going to say it was him being SOFT, physically and mentally.
