Since the season has ended, the Cowboys have lost six assistants and they still have lots of work to do. Who are some candidates?
Ray Horton -- He won a Super Bowl ring with the Cowboys in 1992 as a defensive back and was considered for Garrett’s staff back in 2011. He was out of football last season after serving as Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator in 2016. While the Cowboys would like Greg Jackson to return to help the secondary, Horton has a lot of experience.
A source tells @BlueStarBlog @NBCDFW the Cowboys interviewed Ray Horton today for a position on the defensive staff. The source said Horton met with Jason Garrett and Rod Marinelli and the trio watched tape and discussed philosophy. Horton played 3 years with Dallas from 1989-92

As the Cowboys look to fill a lot of openings on their coaching staff, here are a few more rumors to add to the mill.
One is John Pagano. He was the Oakland Raiders coordinator at the end of the year, he had taken over when Ken Norton, Jr. was fired. Pagano has a long history as a defensive coach in this league, including time as a defensive coordinator and coaching linebackers. If Matt Eberflus is indeed leaving, and every indication is that he is leaving, then Pagano would make sense to slide into his spot under Rod Marinelli.

Sanjay Lal (Wide Receivers Coach)– Replacing the departed Derek Dooley, Lal is expected to be named the new wide receiver coach, although the Cowboys have yet to make a formal announcement. Lal has 11 years of NFL coaching experience with four teams, most recently with the Colts this past season.

It’s just a matter of who that player is. Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has one suggestion, and it’s one that fans in Dallas know quite well: speedster Christian Kirk of Texas A&M.
”Christian Kirk isn’t the tallest (5’11”, 200 lbs) but he’s a compact, exciting, fast receiver who can play in the slot or split out wide. He would give the Cowboys offense an immediate jolt of speed and playmaking ability if he can adapt to the Dallas scheme coming out of Texas A&M.”

If you looked at the Cowboys roster, this pick makes a ton of sense. Defensive tackle, particularly the 1-tech, is an area of concern. Maliek Collins looks okay as the 3-tech, although his 2017 fell short of expectations. At the 1-tech, after Stephen Paea retired injured, the Cowboys went through a rotation of guys, each with deficiencies. Guys like David Irving and Datone Jones were playing out of their natural positions, and the depth was questionable. Drafting Vea and plopping him down as your 1-tech makes a lot of sense.

The Cowboys need some beef to their run defense but would they really spend their first-round pick on a defensive tackle?
The Cowboys liked the idea of having an athletic nose tackle when they moved Maliek Collins there during the season when David Irving was available and healthy to play the under tackle.
Maybe Vita Vea is enough of a rare talent that Marinelli and the Cowboys would go against their usual policy and draft a nose tackle in the first round.

In order for a one-tech to get drafted in Dallas, it's going to take a lot of convincing Rod Marinelli he's your man.
From skill and need standpoints, the selection of Vea makes sense. For it to happen, however, the Cowboys have to break from one of defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s long-held truths: Don’t draft run-stopping defensive tackles in the first round.
Marinelli has gotten by and succeeded with players such as Nick Hayden and Stephen Paea at nose tackle. Hayden was underrated in his time with the Cowboys, but he was not a dynamic interior player. Paea’s first season with the Cowboys was cut short by a knee injury.
