I see a guy you’d be happy to get in the 3rd as a situational DT. You see a flash play form time to time but for the most part his tape is very ordinary.

For a guy that is a sub 290 pound DT he’s not nearly athletic enough to be a 1st round talent. So what am I missing? Where is the tape that shows this guy as anywhere near a top 20 pick?

Ordinary?

I saw great plays at 0:15, 0:43, 1:04, 2:06, 2:42, and 2:53. I was just about to call it good after 3 minutes, and then he got a sack and a near-sack on back to back plays right after that.

This is vs Wisconsin, one of the best running teams in football, and he's stuffing the run like it's going out of style. There's not as many pass rush opportunities in this game because of Wisconsin's offense, but I was amazed to see a 3 tech who goes 6'2" 280 wrecking guards like he's 6'5" 320.

I agree about the athletic concerns, I'm looking forward to the combine to see how he performs. However, to me he has an elite trait of quickness off the snap. I've seen him jump the snap in just about every game I've watched. Included is my favorite play of his.

best interior DT in the draft.
strong vs the run.
gets good pass-rush from inside.
if all the noise about letting Irving walk is true..he'd be a helluva get at 19 and a good runnin' buddy w/Collins.
what happens with Hitchens will determine this,I think.
If Hitch walks....Im hopin Edmunds from Va Tech or Rashaan Evans from Bama is the pick.
I like Hurst alot....have no problem with him at 19.
Long way to go tho.

Wisconsin and Michigan st were his best games. And even in those games he disappears for stretches. But then you watch Maryland and Rutgers and he’s extremely disappointing.

5 or 6 splash plays that look good a game don’t out weigh getting washed out of the play the majority of the time.

I’ll go further and say he has a very good burst off the snap 5-6 times a game...but why does he look ordinary so many other snaps? I think if you watch actual premier 3 tech tape there is a BIG difference

This guy is way undersized. If you are going to pick a DT get someone who is going to be a load in the middle and ensures that Sean Lee is protected.

So I just turned on the Rutgers game and figured I'd give it the same 3 minute treatment I gave Wisconsin.

0:00 - Sack, good snap jump.
0:17 - blows up the center, the RB goes wide and gets taken down for a loss.
0:40 - throws the guard back 3 yards, realizes the QB has the ball, gets off his block and tackles the QB for a 4 yard gain.
1:34 - TFL, blew up the guard
1:49 - TFL, beat the guard with an awesome snap jump
2:22 - disengages, gets out of trash, pile-jumps the QB.
2:55 - point man on a sweep run, holds his ground vs the double team, QB can't get wide and is taken down for a loss.

Now just off counting stats, we're looking at a sack, 2 TFLs, and 2 or 3 tackles in just over a half of play. That's extremely disappointing?

Again, 4 splash plays doesn’t make a good game. Yes, he shows quickness and blows up plays from time to time. But he’s handled and not apart of the play A LOT of the time as well. He’s just not going to have the size or athleticism to be a consistent force in the NFL in my opinion. No way I’m taking a guy with his ceiling with a top 20 pick

Watch the tape, man. Give me some time stamps vs Rutgers where Hurst is being washed out.

1st play- double teamed, has no shot to hold his ground
:33- terrible technique, went no where
1:33- 1 on 1, doesn’t get to the los
2:03- slants to the right into the entire line
2:12- 1 on 1 and handled
2:18- guard only gets small piece of him but not quick enough to get to back. Looks fat and unathletic in pursuit
3:35- single block completely takes him out of his gap
5:00- last off the line on a stunt
5:35- tries another stunt and easily carried out of pocket

Where are this swim moves, spin moves, violent hands? There’s just not much to his game. He has a quick burst off the line that he utilities maybe a 3rd of the snaps? And even with that quick burst he doesn’t seem to have a plan with it, just speed in 1 general direction. I don’t see that playing up nearly as much in the nfl. He’s either going to have to add a lot to his repitiore or slim down and get more anthletic and quick

First play - the sack?
0:33 - beat the guard off the line easy, finger-length away from a 3rd TFL
1:33 - you mean the TFL?
2:03 - by "slant to the right of the entire line", you mean where he comes straight off the ball and swims over to the LT?

I literally don't think we're watching the same tape. Are you writing your time stamps from the start of the play?

Might be the quickest DT, outside of Aaron Donald, I've seen in recent memory. Not my favorite pick in the 1st round but wouldn't be angry about it.
Cowboys Congregation says AMEN.
I'd love to have a DT as relentless as he is.
