Again, 4 splash plays doesn’t make a good game. Yes, he shows quickness and blows up plays from time to time. But he’s handled and not apart of the play A LOT of the time as well. He’s just not going to have the size or athleticism to be a consistent force in the NFL in my opinion. No way I’m taking a guy with his ceiling with a top 20 pick
Are you kidding?!? A DT with 4 splash plays a game is DROY! What’s a splash play, for a DT? Sacks, TFL,and stops on 3rd and short? If a rookie DT is averaging 4 of those a game, I’ll take him in the top 10!

My bad that was Maryland I did

Even in that "down" Maryland game, he was charted with 5 solo tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and a sack. Dude is a stud.

The thing that gets me with Hurst is how he pushes guards around when he doesn't beat them with speed. I don't know if it's because he lacks moves or because Harbaugh coaches them to do that, but he likes to go to a bull rush after the snap and it's usually pretty effective. He doesn't really get "washed out" - watched Maliek Collins at Nebraska if you want to see what washed out vs the run looks like.

That's why I love this guy: 3 techs with his kind of power are a very rare breed. You get guys like Irving and Collins who can't push the pocket and can't stop the run if they don't win right away, and then you get Hurst who does both while giving up nothing in gap shooting. I don't really care if he doesn't have a swim move right now - I'm not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. This guy is tearing up Power 5 linemen and future NFL guys at Ohio State. Swim moves can be learned - that kind of quickness and lower body power can't.

We'll see. I saw a mock draft on PFF the other day (PFF loves this guy) where he went #3 to the Colts, so there is some potential there.

I think he might fall our way, cause he's kind of short to play 5-tech and probably won't appeal to 3-4 teams while big guys like Payne and Vea are available. Those two players also have the potential to blow up the Combine, so they might end up being the sexier pick by April.

Even if Hurst doesn't make it to us, I'll bet that one of Vea, Payne, or Bryan will. It's a good year to go DT.

Gimme Maliek Collins over him. I'm all for finding a great DT if he's the next Aaron Donald/Geno Atkins but I don't see that type of player. Collins is also the same age as Hurst already with 2 years in the league.

Scouts are higher on him now vs the fans.... But as the draft draws closer I think some fans will change their minds.

Guy is a good player and could help this line.

Mic drop.

I really can't wrap my kind around why anyone is knocking Hurst.

If people want to "knock his size" that's fine.

But his tape and scouting reports are exceptional.

Collins hasn't showed us enough to be a starter in the league due to his lack of power that his scouting reports warned us about.

He'd make a nice backup to Hurst.

Ordinary?

I saw great plays at 0:15, 0:43, 1:04, 2:06, 2:42, and 2:53. I was just about to call it good after 3 minutes, and then he got a sack and a near-sack on back to back plays right after that.

This is vs Wisconsin, one of the best running teams in football, and he's stuffing the run like it's going out of style. There's not as many pass rush opportunities in this game because of Wisconsin's offense, but I was amazed to see a 3 tech who goes 6'2" 280 wrecking guards like he's 6'5" 320.

Wrecking guards?

He got some penetration on a few plays, but he was otherwise handled on all those other snaps.

I think he’s a decent but limited prospect that would be a good rotational player. That said, we already have an undersized 3-tech the coaches like in Neal. Also, the staff is playing Collins out of position at the 1-tech when his best play was at the 3-tech.

Honestly, this coaching staff is so dim witted they’d probably try turning Hurst in a 1-tech anyways.

I’m guessing it’s because Hurst doesn’t have the sheer strength and power of Vea, but I guess I’m like the op and just don’t see the obvious as well. When I see Vea highlights he pops off the screen and seems to stonewall guys and consistently push them back in a violent manner. With Hurst highlights I just don’t see that. He looks just like another decent lineman not the “man amongst boys” that Vea looks like.

I personally would be disappointed if we selected Hurst but be ecstatic if we selected Vea.

With all the scouts drooling over him as well as people I admire on this board insisting he is fantastic, I’ll have to hope they are indeed seeing something for some reason I’m blind to if we do draft him.

Why is no one talking about Harrison Philips from Stanford maybe you guys are just getting started on your research, Hurst is a player but Philips is the Sean Lee of d linemen without the injury history.

Phillips is a beast. He’s not the biggest guy but virtually unmovable in the middle. Love DT’s with wrestling backgrounds that use great leverage like Phillips does. And not only does he hold up against blocks, he fights off them and makes tackles. Looks like the next Kyle Williams to me

Phillips is definite one to have on our radar he just isn't as complete as Hurst.

Phillips is more of a run stuffer that doesn't give you much value as a pass rusher.

Good post and comparison.

Hopefully Harrison can put on 50 pounds and stay the same. He’s around 255 right now
