Why Garrett's inexperience mattered and still matters

Only having been a QBs coach for 2 years before being made offensive coordinator, Garrett has been able to lead a very conservative career.

He's never really been in a position where he had to evolve. He's never been fired or even officially on a hot seat.

Most people in life learn from failure and disappointment, but this guy hasn't because he has never had to.

Belichick was fired from the Browns (Ravens) after 4 years. His time with a number of teams and seeing things not work out builds not only character and experience, but the need to evolve, change, and adapt.

The only time Garrett changes is when he is forced to. When he had playcalling taken away from him or when Romo demanded more control of the offense.

When Garrett lost playcalling we went from 15th to 5th in the league in offense (2013)

This is also when Romo took more control of the offense.

From 2013 til the end of his career with Dallas Romo was 21-11 as the QBs starting QB.

From 2007-2012 he was 49 and 34 and I would note that in 2007 Garrett didn't have full control of the offense. 2008 to 2012 changes this to 36 and 31...

Garrett went 1-11 without Romo in 2015 because he can't adapt or change. Belichick lost Brady and still won 10 games with Matt Cassell.

Hiring Garrett was not just a disservice to Cowboys Nation, but it was a disservice to his own personal growth and development. He's never learned what a head coach should really do in this league. People will say he learned under Jimmy Johnson, but did he? He was a backup QB. How much exposure to the overall coaching and decision making would he have? I would tell you that it was almost certainly very limited.

And I can tell you he definitely didn't learn anything from Wade Phillips as he couldn't' wait to be head coach. He was too busy torpedoing Wade's team to learn anything (not to mention Phillips not being great HC material in the first place).

It's time for Jerry to hire someone who has earned the position. There are a ton of coaches out there that are more deserving. Absolutely stunned that this no experience joke of a coach has been given so much latitude.

Garrett has no business coaching in the NFL. I said this 8 years ago and its never been more obvious then it is now. HE is NOT a football guy. He is a politician and nothing more.

If the Cowboys rebound (like most expect) next year, Garrett could be the HC for a while.

I'm sure that they will rebound. It's not a terrible team and there is talent here. The question is how far will the team go and I have no confidence that it can beat solid playoff contenders consistently enough to win a super bowl.

If nothing else, it’s interesting watching the mythology of what you guys are willing to believe for no reason evolve and eventually set.

The inexperienced label left the station long time ago for Garrett. Mediocre is a kind description of his tenure.

Yes.

The Cowboys are much much closer to the 13-3 team than the 9-7 team.

Hell if Switzer and TWill don't screw up the Cowboys go 11-5 this year.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't make it "most".

That same "11-5" team was lucky to get the win against Oakland and facing an Eagles team sitting everyone in week 17 as well.
