Cool thread.

The CCR talk reminded me of a cover Cat Power did of Fortunate Son. I never cared for that one but a couple that I really like...

Her cover of Otis Redding's I've Been Loving You Too Long

And an old song called Troubled Waters. It's from the 1930s I think...

Govt Mule did a pretty cool cover of Etta James " I'd rather go blind"

seeing your post sparked me into bringing that up,oddly.

I guess the greatest "cover"
band of all time would be
SHA-NA-NA (IMO) ,,,HUH?

House of the Rising Sun has been mentioned and it's been covered by so many folks. Unknown who did it first but the most well known is by The Animals.

Years ago I flipping through the CD bargain bin and stumbled across a late 60s-70s era band named Frijid Pink that I hadn't heard of before. Bought it on a whim. Assumed they were from Norway or Iceland. Actually Detroit. Great version that I put ahead of The Animals' take.

Not bad, but I much prefer the original. Bonnie has that raspy, bluesy voice.

Yeah I can see how some (many) would prefer the original. I never really dug her when I was younger, though I like raspy. She'd pop up on MTV and I was just not interested. Too old. Too slow. Too sad. Now I'm old and don't mind slow and sad. :D

I've heard versions by other singers and they're usually real sappy. The Bon Iver version is the only one that made me go back to her original and appreciate her version. I'm not really even a Bon Iver fan.
