Show me the teams that parlayed that top tier #1WR into anything. The best WR in the NFL is part of the triplets with one of the best RB's in the NFL. Boy, Calvin Watkins sure delivered some rings to the Lions and Julio Jones has been golden with the rings. NE wouldn't have a ring if not for those highly paid #1WR's. That wacky Belichick just traded a #1WR, he's an idiot.

The amount of cap absorbed by these top tier WR's hamstrings teams and forces too many to attempt to run the offense through them, see the Lions. And when DC's doubled him and even tripled him, the QB threw to him because he didn't have other options.

And here's my real problem, it's too easy for DC's to erase that player from the offense and too often he doesn't even need doubles to do it. Then where are you? DAL and DEN gave identical contracts to their #1's, how did that work out?

Lemme see here. Bryant touches the ball 6 times a game, at best, and Zeke touches the ball 5 times as much for 1/3 the cap. The Steelers make Brown the highest paid WR in history and what does the RB want now? Watch what happens when Todd Gurley and Kareem Hunt are up after the paydays Cooks and Watkins get. I guess Jarvis Landry was the missing piece to the Browns winning a game?

If I were calling the shots in this draft, the best receiving RB and TE would be higher on my board than WR. First of all if my QB is not a drop dead deep ball chucker, why in the hell do I need a #1WR? Is this an offense built around that?

I love it, LOVE IT, that the RB has made a comeback and I hope Barkley blows it up this season wherever he is and Chubb too.. The most depressing stat to me in the NFL is that only 2 teams even hit 50% on their run calls and that ain't the football I grew up on.

How did the Saints manage to make the playoffs? Run game and D. PHL ranked 3rd in rush O and 1st in rush D, hmmmmm. MIN ranked 2nd in rush D, another hmmmmm. Run the ball, stop the run.

It is a bad idea to pay too much to any single position or any single position group. WRs have been significantly over paid for some time.

OL are skyrocketing up in value across the board. LTs have always been highly pai but other linemen not so much, including guards. Now guards are a big ticket item if they are really good.

I think it would be better to draft an OT or a guard in the first round this year so you can let Martin go next year if he demands too much.

A DE wouldn't be bad either if you want to let Lawrence walk after this year.

I don't think it is a bad idea to beef up the lines every chance we get. But our need is too strong at MLB and DT this year.

Martin is not the only challenge, Collins is right behind him. Lawrence wants too much, he'll be gone next season so a DE isn't a bad choice.

Are wide receivers about to drop in

Exactly. The Demarious Thomas contract was a bust. The Dez contract was a bust. This is a common theme with too much money at that position.

Personally, I think this is good for football. The true value in terms of winning is found at other positions.

It wasn' a bust. It' actually great value. For the Beast that he is. The problem was the weak QB play. But that' fine because that weak QB is our future so a great WR like Dez is a waste on our team
He' still great and worth that price but not for the Cowboys because Dak can't read defenses and he' inaccurate on deep throws because he doesn' have NFL QB armstrength

Are wide receivers about to drop in value?

For years, running backs have seen their worth devalued, while wide receivers rocketed up the draft boards. The already diva nature were blown up even larger, and they seemed to rule the league and all the attention.

But look at the last three drafts. First-round receivers are bustin' likes grapes. Then there's the Odell Beckham drama. The Jarvis Landry drama. The Dez Bryant drama. On and on. You know the names.

Now, RBs are re-finding their value.

Perhaps teams should focus on the nuts and bolts more....linemen and linebackers. It's hard to be bad when you are good in the trenches.

Who's the last big-name diva receiver to win a championship?

Exactly. The Demarious Thomas contract was a bust. The Dez contract was a bust. This is a common theme with too much money at that position.

It's just too much $ for a position that might not actually handle the ball at all for an entire game and can be schemed out by good defenses. QBs and RBs touch the ball more than any other position on the team, that's where draft capital should go for offenses.

I'm not sure Philly would completely agree. Their offense went to another level, with some key WR additions last season. Their presence opened up their offense, specifically allowing their tight end to feast all season.

Perhaps you're right in the sense of committing too much $ for 1 player at that position. Alshon Jeffrey just got paid like a # 1, in the off-season. So, we'll see if that comes back to bite them going forward. They had him on a cheaper one year deal, prior.

You’re correct, it’s the life cycle of the NFL and trying to keep defenses on their toes. Teams are now switching to power running since the defense have adapted to the pass game. Offenses will switch back to pass once defenses are defending the run with success again. Rinse and repeat.

The Eagles receiving corps is average at best.

The last all time great receiver I remember playing in the SB was Moss and it didn't help.

I think that's right, I think Dez will definitely go to a good team, but I don't think there's anyone willing to pay him 12.5

Very good OL don't last very long. They either go very high, or you have to develop them.

LB is a significant need (how significant depends on if Lee is healthy and Jaylon returns to college form). Jaylon was listed as a top 5 player at ANY position in college. That's incredible if he gets back to that form.

You can get a serviceable starting linebacker in the 3rd and sometimes even the 4th round that could start this year. That's probably not the case with OL.

when the wr can play on the offensive line and protect the Qb or on the defensive line and pressure the Qb, then they should get paid like a long snapper..

Give me a stud QB, a dominant OL, a scary DL, and a reliable kicking game.

If I have all that I'll take my chances with the other positions.

I just saw teams give out potentially dumb contracts to receivers.

Watkins, Landry, Richardson etc.

Robinson got a lot too, but IMO he at least had #1 production and wasn't hype like Watkins.

Put it this way, I'd much rather see the hole on the O Line improved at 19 or the defensive front 7. The rumors of a WR at 19 or even trading up for one would be idiotic.
well this draft is heavy at WR so you are mostly right, but doesn't Ridley or maybe even Sutton at #19 intrigue you? I think we can grab a good WR in 2nd round, but I do think about that.

As long as the focus is on the O, the D will lag behind. The reason those 70's and 90's Cowboys teams as well as the 60's GB, 70's PIT, 80's SF and 00's NE teams were great and sustaining was balance.....O to D and run to pass, except all but NE relied on the run more.

It's great to have these pbers on the OL but this team is headed to biggest OL payroll in history and the last time I looked, it wasn't necessarily the best OL that won. KC had the best for about 6 years and didn't sniff a SB. Need a good one, no doubt, but not at the expense of the D side of the ball.

Give me my choice for my good vs great players and I'll take great at C and LT, good at the other 3, and all the rest of the great on the D and the odds favor great at above then 3rd round.

An OL eating DT or MLB at 19 intrigues me more.

I think there is also a direct correlation with the posters that want a WR at that 19 spot and their belief in Dak as the franchise QB and I am not there yet. If I was sold, I might be in a lean in that direction but I think if we can fix the D we help him more than getting a WR with that pick.

The other twist to this is what if NYG picks Barkley? PHL was 3rd in the rush. We could see the return of smash mouth East ball and that WR isn't going to be much help. I would sure like it better if they addressed that middle of the front 7 early on than a WR.

Scheme > WRs

Great WRs are not a need.. Just a few solid guys that do their job is all you need.

I think we will start to see teams figure this out because the teams winning championships almost never have a top NFL WR.

Coaching, QB, and defense is the recipe for a championship. That is where resources need to be spent.

Works if you have Brady

Demaryous and Dez suffered from the same thing, lost their top 10 QB and their stats fell. QBs make the wr.
