It seems like every year there is a player or two that I really do NOT want the Cowboys to take in the first round. A player or two that would really upset me.

Since we are not drafting until the 19th pick (barring a trade up or down) there are a large number of players that may or may not be available to us. The list below is the players I would be ok with us taking if we sit at 19 with the first few only on the list if they some how slide down even though I doubt they do.

If they Fell

LB R.Smith
S D. James
CB D. Ward
DB M. Fitzpatrick
DT V. Vea
OT M. McClinchey

DE H. Landry

Probably should be available.

LB. R. Evans
LB LVE
OG W. Hernandez
OT/OG I. Wynn
OC/OG James Daniels
OC/OG B. Price
WR. C. Ridley
WR. D.J Moore
DT. M. Hurst

Players with a trade down

DT T.Bryan
DE Davenport
WR C.Sutton

The only player i really do not want is DE Arden Key from LSU. I don't need he and Gregory being Rehab Roommates.

I think Davenport has tons of potential but I think he is also raw. However DE is a position that I don't think many think about in this draft and in reality maybe we should. We don't know what Taco will or will not become yet. We Got Tank for this year but it is clear that he and the Cowboys are a ways apart in contract so he may bolt next season. If Landry Fell or Davenport is there...it might be surprise picks for us that might not help this year but could be helpful in the future. Just no Arden Key please...even in the later rounds...I don't care if you get him as a steal, if they don't see the field because of problems off the field it is not a steal...just look at Gregory.

If we take Sutton I hope it is in a trade down or in the second round. He seems like he is the WR that is closest to Dez and we just got rid of Dez. Dez would be more gifted out of the gate. The only thing I can see that maybe they see in Sutton is that he is smart and Teachable.

DE Hubbard - Maybe in a trade down. I mentioned in another thread that it seems like Harold Landry might be the faller this year as I am constantly shocked in some Mock Drafts (on the net or on TV) where he somehow slides out of the first. Sam Hubbard falls more than he does in many of these. However he does not have the explosive step of Davenport or a healthy Landry. If he fell to 50 chances are he would probably be BPA.

So list your list of who you would be ok with even if some would be lucky to fall or in a trade down.

And also list who you would rather not draft in the first.

Would you be happy with this scenario where we trade our 1st and 2nd to move up and get safety, Derwin James?

Off the top of my head, there are only two players I really don't want with the pick at 19:

LVE - like it or not, he's a boom or bust player. He could turn into an elite linebacker with his so-called off-the-charts athleticism. However, we Cowboys fans are no strangers to this type of a get: Bobby Carpenter, Jason Williams, and Byron Jones. Byron hasn't been a "bust," but with the expected more back to Corner, he hasn't been "boom" either.

Taven Bryan - I've watched and re-watched this kid. His ceiling, in my view, is just solid. Think Tyrone Crawford. That's who I think of when I watch him. A good kid to have, but with my first round pick I want impact. And by impact, I'm not talking about a kid who gets a bunch of sacks and tackles for loss. I'm talking about a player who makes the players around him better by merit of his presence, such as the type of impact I believe Vita could have on that defensive line.

If the Cowboys go receiver in the first, it will be because there's a run on them before 19 which I can't see happening. But let's say they go receiver in the first anyway - I'll be okay if it is Calvin Ridley or DJ Moore. Of the two, I can't decide who I like better but if the Cowboys are wanting to replace Dez, DJ Moore is the way to go. If they are looking for a guy who is going to be where he is supposed to be when he is supposed to be at the top of his route, Calvin Ridley is the way to go. The knock on DJ for me is how the Cowboys would use him; physically he is a slot receiver, but the kid has the ability to go get the ball, so he can play anywhere...but can the Cowboys figure out how? I'm not so sure about that based on their history. Ridley will be 24 in December, which means by the time his second contract comes along as a first round pick, he will be 29. Yikes!

My overall preference at receiver is Anthony Miller. If you could combine what Ridley and Moore does best, you might just get Miller. He's a good route runner, consistent catcher of the ball and excellent with the ball after the catch. Best of all, he could potentially be had in the third round, following a small trade up, if I'm guessing correctly. And, for me, the best part is you can use that first round on an actual position of need that is more likely to also be the best player available.

At the end of the day, I will be very happy if the Cowboys address the trenches in the first round, be it OL or DL, doesn't matter...so long as said addition is not Taven Bryan. The Cowboys trenches (both sides of the ball) as it stands right now is just one really good addition away from being dominant. If the Cowboys can find that addition, 2018 could be 2016 great.

As long as we don't trade up for an offensive player, I'll probably be happy.

My comment is that Byron Jones was picked at #27. To get a solid multi-year starter at pick 27 is a success. If you had higher expectations, then I would argue that your expectations were at fault, not the play of Byron Jones. I think of Taco Charlton similarly. I don't expect him to ever become a transcendent star, but I think he'll become a solid player by his 3rd season. That's what you should expect with picks at #27 and 28, most of the time.

Getting back to Jones, I think the reason that he was moved to safety is because he was one of the best 4 DB's the Cowboys had, and they wanted him on the field. With former 6th overall pick Claiborne and $50 million man Carr playing at CB, moving him to safety got him on the field. If he'd stayed at CB, people would have complained about him like they were complaining about Charlton being a bust last season. Letting go of Claiborne and Carr, plus the development of Woods last season is allowing the Cowboys to move Jones back to CB, where I think he's more suited to play. But I'm not going to complain about him being a top 50% safety his first three seasons. He wasn't a Pro Bowl player. But he wasn't a terrible liability either. And he excelled at covering tight ends.

It's almost as if you dreamed up a great argument in support of Byron Jones last night and then did a search on this site for someone you perceived to be down on Byron Jones and dropped it as your response. That entire response was to one sentence in my post where I said Byron was neither a bust or boom...which is true.

I don't dislike Byron Jones...in fact, I've defended him quite a bit on this site. I've said countless times Cowboys fans tend to forget when the opposing TE was a thorn in our side all the time until Byron was drafted. I haven't forgotten what Byron brings. I only brought him up as an example of the Cowboys drafting athlete before football player. I'd rather have a football player over an athlete, but I understand how ideal it is to get both when that player is available. I'm just not sure LVE is a good example of that, but I could be wrong, and certainly hope I am if the Cowboys draft him.
