While I will miss the players terribly (especially Romo and Witten), I'm glad that they both retired Cowboys and will excel in their next career for the next 20 years. I was a huge Dez fan and believer until this past season. That fumble against Seattle was absolutely unforgivable and the amount of dropped passes was unacceptable. The harsh reality is that, even though Romo and Witten are some of my favorite players in franchise history, this era was absolutely predicated and defined by mediocrity. An improbable 2007 13-3 season that ended with a Cabo trip, an awfully run Patrick Crayton route, and a RW McQuarters interception in the end zone. A 2009 season that led to our first playoff win in quite some time, the domination of the Eagles, and then a bludgeoning by an aging Brett Favre. A 2014 season that was absolutely running on all cylinders - which culminated in the NFL's leading rusher fumbling and the NFL's leading touchdown WR controversially not being able to make the play. I'm still not over 2016, but allowing Aaron Rodgers to convert on 3rd and 20? Yikes. That's not even counting the 3 straight 8-8 seasons and 3 straight losses in de-facto NFC East championship games to all three of our biggest rivals. This era is defined by not being able to win the big games. Ever. We shouldn't have even beaten the Lions in the playoffs in 2014. Good riddance.
I'm seeing a new energy with this group, and, more importantly, a lack of bloated contracts (with the exception of Tyrone Crawford). Depending on how durable this offensive line can be during the season, I firmly believe the Cowboys may be one explosive player away from advancing to a conference championship. We are drafting well and have assembled a good unit. We just need to coach them up.
