Got paid like an elite player and hasn't performed to his pay grade.

Sounds a lot like a WR that was here, but yet no one harping on the DE, DT, no now a DE....so which player gets released and goes on and plays well, so they can keep this flexible player that doesn’t produce to his contract, or really produce at all.

T Crawford, like it or not, is one of the best defensive linemen on the team. When he played DT, he was a starter. When they move him to DE, he is a starter. It's not his fault no one can beat him out. We actually have a ton of bodies for DT, especially the 3-tech, so I think it makes perfect sense to keep him at DE. Besides DLaw, who's going to play at DE? Maybe Taco, maybe Ealy, maybe Armstrong, Tapper, Jones? That's a lot of maybes and wannabees. Crawford has proven he can stop the run at DE and bring pressure; gaining a little quickness may also result in sacks.

In my mind the best front four we have is still
DLaw -- Collins -- Irving -- Crawford

until the young guys can prove it or take his position away. In passing situations, maybe one of the young kids comes in at DE and Crawford moves inside for Collins. At least we have lots of possibilities across the DL this year, and if Crawford ever drops out of the rotation or someone proves to be just as good, then we can stop whining about his contract.

OK. let's try this out:

Inside without Crawford, we have Irving, Collins (who's recovering from a broken foot) and Price (1-tech only). The rest are either low-end rotational players (Ash, Neal) or players we don't know will even make the roster (Ward, Osborne, Ross).

So that means, we have two proven 3-techs, and one of them may not be ready at the start of the season and a rotational 1-tech. And then a couple of other potential rotational players.

Outside without Crawford, we have Lawrence and Charlton (last year's first-rounder) plus probable rotation players (Ealy, Armstrong, Jones and Tapper, possibly Gregory) and a few guys who don't stand a chance to make the roster.

So, that's one proven starter, a first-rounder who needs to be given every chance to win the other job and around five guys who will be vying for a role in the rotation (although Early and Jones could see some time at 3-tech).

I'd rather let all those ends see if they can sort out the starters and rotation at those spots and start Crawford out rotating with Irving at 3-tech, where he's needed now. If the ends fail, then we'll need Crawford there, but it's too early to remold him into an end IMO.

In some ways I think Crawford is taking a hit when fact is had others not got themselves suspended he likely would not have been playing on the outside at DE, Cowboys have gone into seasons wanting him at DT then either and injury or Suspension has put Crawford back outside.

And I don't think anyone "hates on the guy", they hate on the poor return on investment, not the person.

And the Cowboys immediately doubled down on the bad contract by reworking it and getting locked in. And now, Crawford will see most, if not all of that $45 million without ever having been a top player, or even having carved out a true role for himself.

Again, not all his fault, but not untrue either.
No I think they really hate him, when Jerry flashed that contract he should have said Mr Jones that is way too much. The hate that goes towards players in this fan base is nuts

I think that you and anyone else who claims otherwise would have to produce actual posts to support it.

Show me a post that says "I hate Tyrone Crawford the person."

On the other hand, if Crawford was dominant at any one position, the team would never consider moving him.

So it goes both ways.

I just think he has been put in position because of mistakes or injuries of others. Was not a case of having a ton of talent outside that were able to play.

It was also a case of not being good enough to keep Maliek Collins from taking the starting 3-tech spot. The one they gave him that big contract to play.

If Crawford was that great there, the team would have never thought of moving him in the first place and Collins would have either been a backup or had to find his way onto the field elsewhere. Great players don't get shuffled out of their positions.

I know this is a continued hijack of this thread but Crawford is the most wrongfully maligned player on the team. His contract's avg. salary is 9 million. That's not elite DL money. It's not even upper-echelon anymore. It's above average starter money. Which is what he is. It's not a bargain, but it's not some woefully overpriced deal.

If you just want to cherry pick and say he's overpaid now based on the $9.6 million average over the final four years of his deal, that's at least a better argument. It's not exactly accurate, but it's better.

By average salary (according to overthecap.com) he is the 23rd highest paid 4-3 DL in the league. That doesn't include 3-4 DL or 3-4 OLB. That only includes 4-3 DT or DE. If you include 3-4 DL, he is the 34th highest paid overall defensive lineman in the league.

So he might be a little overpaid, but not by much. And given his versatility and dependability, he might actually be a little underpaid.
