What writers predict means nothing, they have predicted great seasons for Dallas and were wrong and predicted bad seasons for Dallas and were wrong. Hell 2016 few here predicted Dallas would roll to a 13-3 record with a rookie QB and RB leading the way.

Nor in 1975 with the Dirty Dozen making the team. We played in the Super Bowl that year.

True. I go into the season expecting the Cowboys to go out and win the NFC East. I expect it because I think they are capable of doing that.

That's going to be the easiest way to make the playoffs this year.

Yep, that WC fight looks to be a close one and while every game counts, there are some on the schedules that are going to be early must wins for the tie-breakers.

On the plus side, in the past it has been parity because of the low level of play. In the NFC this season, it looks to be the opposite and some good teams that might have made the playoffs 4 or 5 seasons ago are going to miss it. There are some really interesting showdowns coming in the North and South.

Dallas Cowboys aren't currently favored to make playoffs - Sam Quinn, 247 Sports
The NFC is going to be tough this season with the revamped NFC South as well as multiple teams from the other divisions contending also. Where do the Cowboys fit in with all this?

Odds Shark [sic] just released their playoff odds for the 2018 season, and the Cowboys are ninth in the NFC as of this moment. They are behind:

The Super Bowl champion Eagles, who have the best odds in the conference at -260.

The NFC runner-up Minnesota Vikings at -260, tied with the Eagles for the best odds in the NFC after adding Kirk Cousins.

Understandable. The Eagles should be favored to win the division - whether they will remains to be seen.

But if they do that leaves Dallas fighting for one of 2 wild card spots, so yeah, odds would be lower.

In my mantra of riding the fence with Dak, I'd say our odds are 50/50!:)

I would much rather see negative articles about this team than "favorites to win the SB" articles. As Parcells used to say ALL THE TIME, "don't eat the cheese." If there was ever a master at keeping a team grounded, it was him. If you want to have a successful team, don't let them buy in to the hype. Hype does not win games...

trust us, this team hardly eats the cheese. we dont have to worry about that.

I think the Giants will be a totally different team than we faced last year. Especially with OBJ and a running game. We will need to fluster Eli early... because we know he completely crumbles when people are in his face a lot.
Eli is one of those QBs where luck plays more into his success than skill. He will throw into dangerous places, and can get very lucky at times.

Commanders... I am not sure what we will see out of them.
I still think Smith is better than Cousins though. I was never sold on Cousins being something amazing.
I think the Skins are going to be basically the same team we saw last year though. I doubt we will see that
much of an improvement in them.

Eagles, will be the same team they were last year. Nothing has really changed over there.

The Saints will be tough to beat.

Vikings will be tough

I think Seattle is done with, during this rebuild stage.

Falcons will still be tough

Rams we won't see during regular season.

Carolina is so inconsistent, that they don't really scare me that much. Last year, they did well, this year they may not. They have a yoyo thing going like the Cowboys.
If Cam has a hang nail, they won't play well. He is a big cry baby, and he is far from someone who keeps their composure. I think when things don't go right, he
crumbles like Eli. He constantly cries to the refs every other time he gets touched. Their defense is good though. That is where they can definitely beat us, because
we have no idea what we will see out of our offense and Dak.

Since we are smack dab in the middle of a rebuild, it would not be surprising.

Now, shocking would be if we don't make the playoffs in 19, but if we keep treating DT and S like the plague, it could happen.
If we aren’t a playoff team this year what is puttng us over the top in 19?

For the Wild Card - assuming the Cowboys don't win 11 or 12 games - it really comes down to how all the "3rd party" teams do. Can the Commanders and Giants be good enough to throw some losses on the 2 playoff caliber teams in the NFC South that don't win their division - but not good enough to saddle the Cowboys with extra losses?

Does another team, like the 49ers, emerge from the NFC West to make even more of a competition for the WC? If they don't and the Seahawks and Arizona are on the decline, do they give up a few wins to the NFC North opponents and a division that had 1 playoff team last year suddenly have 3 teams in the mix?

What if the Titans and Texans improve dramatically and the NFC East teams are faced with 3 tough AFC games while the AFC East and AFC North remain lopsided and give their NFC North and NFC South opponents 3 easy victories?

That is why every game may not be a "must-win" game, but every single game is extremely important - and for at least half the season you have no idea which non-Cowboys games are more important than the others.

The process.

Never underestimate the process.
Lol

I was just wondering what his thoughts were. Is that pending we’d be addressing DT and S in next draft or FA or the current talent we have further developing ?

I’m always interested in his X and O schemes and evaluations which I’m often aligned with.

Everyone has an opinion, just like, uh, shall we say, other particular body parts.

Indeed. The only thing more meaningless than mid-July playoff predictions by the talking heads is mid-July oddsmaking predictions by bookies. Fans lap it up every year like thirsty dogs, though.

And the games this year that are must wins because of the same scenario are Carolina, Atlanta and the Saints. If Dallas loses those three games then they are going to have to win the division. But there are some on this board who say the Carolina game isnt a must win game!

If I were a coach, I would treat all 16 games as must-win games. If you coach and play them all like they're your last one, you probably have a shot to make the playoffs.

It is not a hard prediction to make. The same coach who could only manage to get the team to the playoffs twice in 7+ years is still on the sidelines.

Only two playoff appearances and only one win in seven seasons not to mention the games he cost us that could have gotten us in the playoffs with bad game / clock management. Garrett has proven it is safer to bet against him.

the jones family does not care if the team makes the playoffs just as long as they finish with a 8-8 or better and get atleast four primetime games.

No arguments here. Jerry has proven he would much rather just be comfortable with a coach than hire a good one who can add something to the team. As long as fans keep putting money in his pocket he will not change. I am doing my part. I haven't spent a dime on any tickets or merchandise in several years.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Best rule to use: pundits expect great things? Bad year.

No big expectations? Better than usual.
