Turn back the clock five years, the Dallas Cowboys are coming off their third consecutive 8-8 season and after losing their third consecutive winner-take-all Week 17 game. Approaching the 2014 draft, the hype is surrounding Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

Jerry Jones wishes for him to be the heir to Tony Romo. Dallas’ selection eventually comes around and with the 16th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Cowboys select Zack Martin. For the first time, Jerry Jones doesn’t get what he wants, but what he needs.

This selection marks the beginning of a new era in Dallas. The focus has turned to building the offensive line to protect Romo from injury as he got older and to take the pressure off of him by running the ball.

The strategy worked as the Cowboys rode their new Great Wall of Dallas to the Divisional round of the playoffs twice in the past 4 years. Tony Romo and Dak Prescott have had all the time in the world to drop back in the pocket and look for an open receiver.

This offensive line led the way as DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing in 2014 and Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. In both 2014 and 2016, Dallas finished second in the league in rushing yards per game with 147.1 and 149.8 respectively.

Now back here in 2018, the vaunted Great Wall of Dallas is beginning to crumble. Injuries and age are starting to take their toll. Just about each part of the offensive line has a problem it’s dealing with. The Cowboys spend more of their money on the Offensive Line than any other team in the NFL.

Highlight: Injuries have plagued Tyron Smith for the past couple of seasons.

Highlight: The absence of Travis Frederick is evident.

Highlight: There has been a lack of stability at Left Guard and Right Tackle.

I'm good with drafting a quality tackle next season, but I'm done chasing these guys in the first round. There are too many other needs on this team that are far more egregious.

To be fair, none of us could have anticipated the Travis Frederick situation. It really screwed the pooch.

Absolutely not.

We've sunk resources into it and now we can't just break it down and start over.

Tyron and La'el need to step their games up.

What we need to do is get the pass game going. Run some hurry up and get the offense in a flow and take some shots downfield even if the player is covered.

Not rebuilt, rebooted.

No, it does not have to be in the first. I think we'll be looking at QB in the first.

The problem we've been having w/ midround OL's is that we're so focused on taking guys who can block at the 2nd level that we ignore whether they can block at the first level.

I wholeheartedly agree. Many of us wouldn't be at each other's throats if Fredbeard was still in there. While Looney has performed admirably, Fredbeard is indeed the best in the business and that type of quality rubs off on the guys next to him.

Tyron may no longer be able to step anything up. He looks bad man... La'el. Sure. He's young and, as far as we know, still very healthy.

I think Lael will be OK; at least pretty good. Tyron though- he might be done. Sucks but there it is. And of course the question about fredbeard. And Martin needs more strength but at least there is reason to hope for improvement there next year. Right now we have Zack and that is it to rely upon.

I haven't seen this weeks all 22 but the first 2 weeks he looked fine physically but he kept making mental mistakes. Like he doesn't know who to block.

LA'el too.

I think the Tyron is done theory is a bit ridiculous right now.

I think you have wait until the end of the year and see how thing shakes out with Tyron. I see Fred being IRed giving him and FO the rest of the year decide on his career. Collins is 2020 free agent I personally think Looney is a keeper. In fact, I would tear up the two-year deal he just signed and replace it with new 5 year deal. Connor is my future RT or maybe LT. Looney is new LG or C.

Would be nice to land a developmental LT in day 3 or so that has the ability in 2-3 years to be ready.
Easier said than done of course on multiple levels.

Does this guy know what he's doing?

Good grief, again with the offensive line? How many 1st and 2nd rounders do we need?

How about investing in skill positions beyond running back and stop thinking if we just get enough road graders we can win a title in the 21st century.

Rebuild doesn't mean get em in the 1st & 2nd rounds.... Many a longstanding NFL offensive linemen have been taken in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds. It's the commitment tot get them. Develop them. etc etc. Use 1 and 2 for skill position needs.

But as we've seen in recent years, that's not the Cowboy way: three first rounders, another guy who would've been, and a second rounder.

They did a nice job of developing 3rd rounder Chaz Green, though.

Tyron might be physically breaking down. I dont know that but Tyron makes those plays he's missing,
