Dallas is one of two teams that has held it's opponent scoreless on their 1st possession of the 2nd half....the other team is the Ravens who are viewed as one of if not the best defenses right now....

At least defensively we are making some good adjustments at halftime and coming out ready to go!

Let's get those skins and hang a w on the wall today!

And last year they were one of the worst teams in the league in the 3rd quarter......

I guess learning how to make good halftime adjustments is a process.

This adjustment was done in the off season.
They still need to make more, as they need adjustments in the 4th quarter as not to give up the game.

But the offense needs the bigger adjustments, to score in the 4th quarter.

This is not the coaches making halftime adjustments.

So you don't believe that our defense being ready to Stop the opposing team's opening drive in the 2nd half doesn't reflect at all on the coaches making adjustments and ensuring the players are ready?

Coaches get credit where it's due and criticism as needed...in this specific case the coaches have earned the credit for having the players ready...

This is true. We were 29th in the league in points/series in the 3rd quarter in 2017, for anybody interested.

We were in the top ten in points/series in the 2nd and 4th quarters, though, so I’m not sure how useful that metric is for evaluating adjustments.

Same with OP’s comment. We’re pretty good at holding teams scoreless on any given series right now. I’m not sure we can attribute the opening drive success to anything more than just having a good defense in general, finally. But I do agree that the idea than any capable NFL coaching staff doesn’t make in-game adjustments is as laughable as most of the hare-brained criticism we see around here.

Let's judge our coaches on their entire body of work, and not just a couple of games.

It's one thing to make "halftime adjustments" is one thing......making CORRECT halftrime adjustments is another.....stopping what was working in the first half is not correct adjustments.....we've seen Garrett do this many times.

Halftime is 12 minutes. Half of that is spent walking off and back on the field. Then you gotta pee.

Halftime adjustments are a myth.

Gotta learn how to pee and make adjustments at the same time

All of my friends who are coaches (including my son) say “halftime adjustments” are overrated. Of course you make some, but they are made throughout the game, not just at halftime.

Here’s where Garrett struggles with adjustments- if the team is getting stopped offensively, he doesn’t seem very capable (or willing) to make quick changes to counter what the defense is doing.

Two examples-
1. Last year, against Denver, the broncs made a huge commitment defensively- they used press coverage and single covered everyone except Cole Beasley, who was bracketed wherever he went. It shut down Dak’s primary receiver and it stacked the box for the run.

THAT defense became the blueprint in 2017 for stopping the Cowboys offense. It didn’t always work, but Dallas rarely did much in terms of moving Beasley around. Garrett usuallly sticks with what he wants, even when it is stopped.

2. The infamous Atlanta game last November. Knowing in advance of the game that LT Tyron Smith was injured, JG and Linehan planned very little to help the hapless Chaz Green. We all watched in amazement as time after time, possession after possession, Garrett left Green in there as as the average falcon DE Adrian Clayborn racked up 6 sacks.

By halftime, it was obvious Green couldn’t handle LT. Garrett made no decision for a change at halftime, despite only being down 10-7 at the half. When the game was already out of hand, Garrett finally removed Green. This game became the game that destroyed the Cowboys confidence and had long term ramifications.

Their is a difference between “commitment” and “stupid”. Garrett blurs those lines when it comes to making in game adjustments. His primary adjustment is for his team to “fight”.

Marinelli is always making adjustments, some times those are limited by injuries / personnel.

The offense on the other hand is always slow to adjust.

It took them 4 weeks to move away from running so many damn curl routes. They ran very few last week, hoping they don't fall back into old habits this week.

No there not. Good coaches make adjustments throughout the game, including at halftime. Garrett may pat his players on the bottom at halftime and say, “play harder”, but good coaches actually try to make adjustments to help their players make plays.

The Cowboys have the most outdated route trees in the league. They run a ton of “straight routes” that are easier to cover than “rub routes” (which the rams run constantly)

Rub routes are crossing routes where one receiver actually screens a defender from being able to stay with the guy they are covering. It’s a crossing route that requires lots of practice and timing. You rarely see these kind of routes with our receivers, which is why they are easier to cover.

The Atlanta game was the worst lack of coaching I have ever seen. Garrett should have been fired right after the game.

Can Dak throw precision timing routes?
