Forget ET This Offseason

Is 80M really the going rate for safeties now or are you just throwing a number out there?
Berry is currently the highest paid safety at 78m over 6 years. The eagles currently have 2 making in the 45 range. I'm guessing Collins is going to begin asking somewhere on the upper end of the between those contracts. I'm just one of those that would rather focus on the lines as I believe pressure has much more impact on the outcome than the safety position!

I don't like the Cooper trade, but it's much better that ANY ET trade.
I am the opposite. While I didn't want to part with a lot, ET would have made a difference on this D. He would have taken it to the next level and helped with turnovers. This team needs to have a dominant D if it wants to compete with the offense they have. I don't see Cooper (or any WR) making much difference on this offense.

the Cowboys need elite FS play more than SS
when Earl is getting those ints, all the silly 'he's 30' talk will be hard to find
he'll also make the corners better, he makes the pass rush better
to have him available is a huge stroke of good fortune, even if you draft a guy he will make them better. just like Lee with 55.

or, let him sign with a rival and watch what he does to this team every year (go back and watch how he won game 3 if you need a reminder)

The Giants seem to be in rebuild mode and they would have to Franchise Tag Landon Collins to stop him from hitting the open market. That's about $12.5M. I could see them doing it, but I could also see them letting him walk and dedicating cap room to fixing that offensive line for their likely high draft pick QB.

If available, Collins would be my number one target in free agency. He's a much better version of Barry Church and a leader. He's also very close with Amari Cooper.

I think Earl Thomas will be here regardless, unless he goes looking for an epic payday.

lol, I want Earl bad and I know they can make it work by spreading the money out wisely, but I just don't see the Cowboys giving Lawrence a big contract and then following that by paying Earl a pretty good chunk of money..

He's 30 and has not completed a season in the last three years.

If he cost us no picks and is willing to play for veteran league
minimum plus turnover bonuses then by all means bring him in.

In the past JJ has a history of overpaying declining players I'd would hope
that would be over with but taking the low hanging fruit because of JJ's
"lightning in a bottle" / "one player away mentality" and Dallas will quickly
find it's way back in salary cap troubles.

And if a team is hip deep in salary cap trouble then there is really no reason to
change the coaching staff.

And the depressing cycle continues.

they want Earl
they just didn't want to keep giving more in draft pick to Seattle
Seattle held all the leverage and made it clear Dallas would pay through the nose to take him while under contract

IMO they would if its an elite talent at a position need. I think the Greg Hardy signing is proof of that.

They got a "good deal" on Hardy because of the DV issue. Dallas ended up paying him just over $3 million because of how the deal was structured.

I think how we handled our flirtation with Sammy Watkins is more telling of situations concerning an "elite talent at a position need." (Not that I'm saying Watkins is elite, only that he was paid like it.)

Dallas will make what it feels is a fair offer and will not go above that even when the market shows the player's value is more than that. This has been the front office's MO since it began this new strategy. It's willing to pay fair market value to keep its players (like it did with Martin), but not to bring in outside FA.

Cooper will be an interesting test of the philosophy next year, considering what he's scheduled to make in his option year. Will the team offer him the type of deal it offers its own free agents or the type it offers outside FAs? The cost of a first-round pick tells me they will treat him like one of their own.

Didn’t he talk down on Dak? No way jerruh and Stephen would bring in somebody who tried to Talk down on their prized pup.

ET goes to the highest bidder. There will be no hometown discount to play for Dallas. I think Dallas will target him early but it won't be cheap.

With no 1st round pick, they will do what has to be done to keep Lawrence in the fold, and they'll definitely try to make a splash and upgrade the team in FA, so they'll be aggresive in their pursuit of Earl, bank on it.. They will see 2019 as a make or break year, and go all out.. If it doesn't work out, the true rebuild begins..

I agree with that, but Dallas and ET is something both sides want to happen so it will IMO. I think the approach is similar to Watkins like you say, they won't go crazy. But Jerry always gets these deals done when he really wants to and I can see the contract having the money ET wants but structured with bonuses and incentives to protect Dallas from it turning into a disaster.

Those two players play different positions.
Fans really don't understand the difference between FS and SS

Good FS are centerfielders that have great coverage and ball skills......basically big CBs
Good SS are big hitters, almost LBs but can also cover some

We use a combination of the two but we still need a FS way more

Heath and Frazier are SS
BJones is a better CB but I thought he did a good job at FS

I would sign ET but not to top dollars.....more like an Eric Weddle deal

He won't have many suitors at big money..... I could see 3/27m

FS were ignored this year

He'll be 30 next season and wants to be paid like the top safety in the league. I say instead we attempt to target Landon Collins since he'll be a UFA next offseason (assuming the Giants don't tag him). He plays SS but it's not like we don't need help there as well. And I feel like his contract demands won't be nearly as high as ET's (could be wrong)...but he's only 24 now and is a stud.

Personally, I don't think we're a safety away and I'd rather keep drafting and resign our own guys....but if we're going to insist upon using free agency, then I'd like to target this guy.

Final Thought: I realize there is a group on people on this board who believe this guy is no good, but those people are dumb...he's one of the best SS in the league, if not the best.
Only a dumb person would think people on this board dont think Collins is any good!

Yeah, I've never heard anybody anywhere say Collins is no good.

But (1) Collins isn't leaving New York, and (2) Dallas has lots of strong safeties and needs a true free safety.

All I know is we NEED to take a shot at Obi now that he has cleared waivers. I wasnt as high on him as others during the draft, having him as a low 3rd, but now for free and given our current safety situation we should be all over him.
