I don't quite understand the negativity over this move. This kid is definitely worth a look to me....it's not like he's been in the league multiple years and had plenty of shots. He was injured virtually all of his rookie year and missed out on a lot of learning time so he has to play catch up at this point. It's not as if we don't need help in the secondary so looking at all options is definitely a wise move.

Jeff Heath is good in a straight line, has a nose for the football and hits like a missile. Terrible as a center fielder, though.

I like Heath as a special teams player but that is about it. I will have to say that he has a knack for intercepting deflected passes and does hit very hard. However, he also whiffs on a lot of tackles. I would be fine if the only times I ever saw him on the field were during punt and kick coverage. All of our safeties stink so I am just glad they are looking. I don't know much about Obi. Maybe he had bad coaching in Oakland? His stats from college don't look bad. He was a 4 year starter. He had 351 tackles, 8 interceptions, 16 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. Plus he is 6'04", 224 lbs, and ran a 4.40 forty time. Bring him and see what skills he has.

Mike Mayock -- prior to the 2017 draft:
"Now we're getting into the freak zone. He's a genetic freak. I thought his tape was really solid. What I like is he's a matchup player. ... His movement skills for his length, his ability to get in and out of breaks, his tackling, he's got first-round talent all-day long."

The price and risks involved for Dallas is low, while the return on the investment could be high.
And we are talking the Raiders here -- complete dumpster fire in full bloom -- their quick & careless trigger in evaluating & discarding players may backfire.

Heath is a perfect Dime/Quarter defender. Limited snaps, passing downs and playing deep. He’s just not an every down guy.

Obi has talent for sure. Some guys just don’t translate well to NFL players. It happens. But I would sign him today. What does it hurt? Small cap hit, obvious talent is there. Will get top flight coaching with Richard.

Look what he did with Byron Jones? He went from middle tier safety, to the #1 CB in the nfl. If anybody can make him a players, it’s Kris Richard. If I am Obi, I’m signing today, for whatever we offer.

Exactly, they should be looking at every offensive lineman, safety, and TE that comes available. We only have 3 healthy safeties on the roster and those 3 are not very good. At TE, I like Swaim as a backup TE (unfortunately he starts for us due to lack of talent), but I would say Jarwin, Rico, and Schultz look like scrubs at this point. OLine, I am afraid we are stuck with what we have. OLine depth across the league is bad so most teams are unwilling to part with good or even average OLinemen.

College career[edit]
Melifonwu redshirted his first year at Connecticut in 2012. As a redshirt freshman in 2013, he started all 12 games and had 70 tackles and two interceptions.[3] As a redshirt sophomore in 2014, he started 11 games, recording 75 tackles. As a redshirt junior in 2015, he started 12 of 13 games and had 88 tackles and two interceptions.[4][5] As a senior in 2016, he started all 13 games and recorded 118 tackles and four interceptions.[6][7]

Professional career[edit]
Melifonwu received an invitation to the Senior Bowl and made three combined tackles as a part of the North who lost 16-15 to the South.[8] He was able to raise his draft stock after performing well during the Senior Bowl practices.[9] Melifonwu attended the NFL Combine and completed the majority of combine and positional drills, but decided to skip the three-cone drill and short shuttle. He had impressive performances in the vertical jump, broad jump, and 40-yard dash that further raised his draft stock. He also participated at Connecticut's Pro Day and completed the short shuttle, three-cone drill, and positional drills in front of 25 NFL scouts from 20 NFL teams. His numbers in the short shuttle and three-cone drill would've ranked second among all positions if he would've posted those times at the NFL Combine.[10] He had private workouts and visits with 11 NFL teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers.[11] NFL draft experts and analysts projected him to be a second round pick. He was ranked the fourth best strong safety in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com, the fourth best safety by NFL analysts Mike Mayock and Bucky Brooks, was ranked the fifth best safety by ESPN, and was ranked the sixth best safety by Sports Illustrated.[12][13][14][15]

The Oakland Raiders selected Melifonwu in the second round (56th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.[18] He was placed on injured reserve on September 5, 2017, with eligibility to return in 2017.[19] He was activated from injured reserve to the active roster on November 4, 2017.[20] He was placed back on injured reserve on December 15, 2017 after having hip surgery.[21]

On August 23, 2018, Melifonwu was waived/injured by the Raiders.[22] He was placed on injured reserve the next day after clearing waivers.[23] He was released on October 23, 2018.

I remember, he was your #1 pet cat of that draft class. He is definitely worth a flyer at his minimum cost.

Give me Conley for a 3rd too. Like Jimmy said, you can never have too many corners.

See if they like Jourdan Lewis.

I got no issues bringing him in.

But he appears to be a total dud. All athlete, no player.

But if Richard thinks he can resurrect him, I got no issues with him.

He has recognition issues and lacks natural instincts but has phenomenal tools, maybe Richard can make a S out of him if they sign the guy.
