Opinion: Stephen Jones comments on Dak is red flag about overpaying him on his next contract

Our cap numbers look great going forward. Zeke isn't due for another two years. Then we can franchise him. I wouldn't worry about Zeke.

All our great lineman are tied up, no need to worry about that. After Lee and Crawford get cut this year Lawrence will be the only highly paid guy on the defense. This a good young team with a bring future with players and the cap. The only time things will get tough is if a guy like Frederick cant come back and play and you have to replace with.

So I should take the reassurance of someone from the Cowboy's zone, over the analysts who seem to be a lot more cautious about things. lets pay everyone.

It got us a win against the very worst team in our division that will draft high next year. It's the kind of passes that would usually lose us the game. Against a better opponent we may not have won. In the Playoffs, if we have those kind of passes we won't win. Why are you guys so eager to pay dak already and have no patience to even see if he will perform in the playoffs. If he proves himself there, then by all means pay the man. But today's game, some people seem to be acting like we just won the Super Bowl.

Some people can see how good this kid can be. 2016 should have clued you into that a little. I was saying this 8 games ago.

As opposed to cutting Dak and starting over like some of you want to do?

I cant speak for analysts. I don't even know which ones you are talking about. I can tell you that some of these guys don't watch or know the Cowboys like I do. Some know much more. Some are lucky to watch the Cowboys play every week. I have watched every Dak game for 3 years. Some multiple times.

Well I hope you are right and I am wrong.

I think some of the things you guy say are right. I just don't agree on your overall analysis in regards to those things.

I see the Oline, scheme, play callers as a much bigger issue then Dak is. But then I don't get all worked up that he isn't Tom Brady or Mahones and never will be. I don't subscribe to the "you need an elite QB" theory.

One way or the other, Dak will get some walking around money to stay on the team...

No I'd do one of two things. 1) Give him Next year to prove himself, and if he does pay the man, otherwise get a QB in the 2020 draft. Or 2) I'd pay Foles if I absolutely felt like I needed to get a deal down now, unless Dak proves himself in this post season. I prefer to be a lot more cautious before paying a player I'm not sure is a Franchise Quarterback.

In 2016, I could see the IT factor and moments of great players make great plays themes coming from Dak. Today's game is the first time I felt that way about Dak in a long time, but still that is coupled in that he also did some horrible plays and this was supposed to be a meaningless game. I'm hoping to see himself prove himself in the playoffs. I like to be cautious about things.

What is proving himself to you? In my mind he has already proven to me that he is our franchise QB. I don't think he has earned elite QB money by any stretch, but he has earned the next contract and earned to be paid the average of what the rest of these guys are getting.

I don't agree with the money they pay half these guys, but that's the going rate.

He isn't a "winner" unless he wins a Super Bowl. Don't overreact to a meaningless regular season win Stephen.

So who doesn't get paid cooper. tank. B Jones. or maybe zeke. Im just curious. or maybe we just remove the salery cap and pay everybody. Btw it wouldn't bother me jj has the money.

I think everyone has resigned themselves to the fact that he will be extended. We can only pray that whatever deal they come up with, it is one that is easily escaped from. Having your team president babbling about QB winz is definitely not a good sign though...

Red in the fan again. Go root for the Eagles and their "franchise qb."

Im not easily pleased either. I pretty much hammer everyone average or worse on the Cowboys.

See I don't expect the Cowboys to win the next game. Not anything to do with Dak.

What you guys don't understand is that modest for a QB is still like 22 million per season. It actually makes sense for us to wrap him up THIS offseason and hope for some kind of an early signing discount. If we wait until the end of next season Dak will be looking even better with growth and better Oline play. And some other middle of the road QB might get overpaid and bump up the going rate.

I know that's not what you Dak haters want, but it makes the most sense.

yeah if we can get like 15-17 million. with lots of bonus potential.

I wouldn't mind him getting paid like an average quarterback. But the signals that Jerry and now Stephen are sending sounds like they will overpay. As for franchise QB, I want to see more before I think of him as one. I honestly don't see him as being effective right now minus Zeek and minus Coop. Either way the playoffs aren't too far off. So its not a long wait to see how he will do. I don't have faith in Jerry being of rational mind. He's as bad as Al Davis ever was. Stephen Jones I had hopes in, but he has been disappointing me as of late by things he says.
