Pros:


Sheldrick Redwine is one of the more versatile safeties in the 2019 NFL draft. Coming out of high school, Redwine arrived at Miami as a cornerback and played his first two seasons there before transitioning to safety. He has experience playing boundary CB, nickel CB, single-high safety, and strong safety from his time at Miami. Wraps up extremely well for a safety and rarely misses tackles when given the opportunity. When the play is developing in front of him, Redwine plays with tremendous instincts and reads quarterbacks and receivers keys to break on footballs consistently. Had a very nice interception against University of Virginia where he baited the quarterback into throwing the deep post. He played it perfectly and broke on the football as it was released by the QB to grab the interception. Showcased good lateral speed when chasing down ball carriers in the open field, and plays with a relentless effort when running to the football. Comes downhill with some force, and isn’t afraid to lay the big hit, even though he does an excellent job with his wrap-up tackling technique. Was a key special teams player at Miami, and loves to contribute on that side of the ball for his team. Ball production in his final year at Miami was very intriguing being still new to the safety position.

Cons:


Has less than ideal athletic ability in short areas, and at times looked overmatched by speedier receivers. Struggles when he’s put in the phone booth to mirror shiftier ball carriers in the open field. Struggled with his back to the football at times at Miami and seemed to play much more comfortable with the play developing in front of him. Can be a bit too aggressive when coming downhill to play the run, and the lack of athletic ability limits his ability to recover when ball carriers beat him to the corner. Struggled at times to shed blockers when they were able to get there hands on him due to poor hand placement and lack of point of attack technique and strength.

Overall Review:


It’ll be hard to find defensive backs in this class that are as versatile, experienced, and tough as Miami’s Sheldrick Redwine. He is an intriguing mid-round option at safety due to versatility, but also what he can bring to the table as a key contributor on special teams. Redwine had an excellent senior campaign for the Hurricane’s, registering three interceptions, three sacks, and 64 total tackles. His ability to line up anywhere in a secondary and play with effort and ability will certainly intrigue Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard who like to move there guys around without limitations. With Redwine’s tackling ability, instincts, and versatility, it wouldn’t surprise me if he is a guy were talking more about this time next year as one of the leagues more underrated rookies.
