Several of these, while they don't have the success history Earl does, they are solid safeties, a couple in particular are good in coverage, which is what the Cowboys need to improve on at the safety position. Considering the age of other starters on the defense, like VanderEsch, J. Smith, Woods, etc. I'd prefer to pay a little less and get a younger guy who's got something to prove. And Richard should be able to coach them up, if they were pretty good at their current team they'd possibly "blossom" in Dallas.

Of course if Earl doesn't get the money he wants but Dallas is offering what other teams are, and it's reasonable, I'd be glad to have him...

Again everyone worried about the $$ and understand why but we just have to look at the facts of the situation and what the front office is doing to see where we are going. Fact one, everyone knows Earl wants to play in Dallas, second, he moved his family to Austin and enrolled the kids in school there, third, he has been seen a number of times working out with Lawrence and Jaylon Smith, fourth, Stephen met with his agents in Indy yesterday and no mention of Stephen meeting with any other safety agent, fifth, the front office is trying to put the best team they can on the field for 2019 and have said that S, TE, and DL are three of the top five needs.

So yesterday they convinced Witten to come out of retirement which gives you a great Y option, leadership on and off the field, a valuable piece for an outlet for Dak, better redzone offense, another coach for the young TEs, and solves part of a need. No, it does not mean Dallas will not sign a TE in free agency nor will it make it unlikely to draft a TE. I still believe that Tyler Eifert could very well become a Cowboy for similar money that Witten is getting and if healthy and stays that way gives you another great option. Now what does it mean for Jarwin, Schultz and Gathers? It gives all of them time to develop. I know most are ruling out Gathers but not going to do that just yet. If we draft another TE then it does make Jarwin a trade piece for a late round choice though.

What does Earl bring? All the same things that Witten does but on defense. He will make the defense much better from all points. His contract is not that much of a sticking point as we are led to believe. Dallas could easily give him a 5 year $60 million contract with $30 million in guarantees and not hurt any of the other signing or extensions they ARE going to do this offseason. Like it or not, Thomas is destined to be a Cowboy.

Fairly certain we will see Lawrence and the Cowboys come to terms on a new contract well before March 13th and would not be surprised to see extensions for Prescott and Cooper come before that also. If anyone thinks they are not talking with the agents for Prescott, Elliott, Cooper and Jones already then you are living under a rock. The larger question for me is will Dallas dip into the DE market in free agency for a better than backup option. Will Dallas make a play for Fowler or Harold or Flowers if they aren't resigned first. Sure I would like to see a good DT also but how long have we been waiting on that one, probably going to draft a guy again.

Seems like a bit much for a player coming off a major injury unless you backload it IMO.......

Then he pretty much seals it, we don't need a 30 year old busted up S demanding top salary.... dude needs to wake up and get real here. Fine, let him sit out in FA and see who comes calling for him. We don't need to break what little bank we have on this money hungry fool. And yes, I was hoping he would come down to earth, but it seems that is not to be.

What ever gave anyone the idea it was about playing for Dallas? It was always about his contract and the money. They either pony up to play or go to plan B, they must upgrade at that position.

Collins was always my first choice but I don't think they're letting him walk.

Sellers' market and there's a ton of cap space out there. That's what drives the market, almost every player will be overpaid in the early going, it's a feeding frenzy and this year there are two playoff teams with a lot of space and fighting in the same division. And they play in the conference with the best QB's.

Good for him. Hopefully he gets $10-$12MM/yr in a 3 to 4yr deal. One that front loads cash in the first couple seasons so Dallas can get out of the last year or two should he be injured a great deal or his play declines.

He wants more than 13 per year.

Smell ya later, Earl.

I would be bringing Glover Quin before overpaying for a 30-year-old safety that has broken his leg the last 2 seasons...

I expect Cowboys to bring him in and make an offer the rest will be up to Thomas. I don't see Dallas making the type of offer Thomas wants but I do think they will make an offer they feel he is worth to them. He is hitting 30 coming off a bad injuries and dealing with injuries the last 3 season.

I’m not shocked at all. I think he’ll get it. Not sure it’s with us.

Earl never wanted to give the Cowboys a HT discount, why would he?
He wants the best of both worlds, top dollar and his dream team.

Exactly. People act like just because he wants to play here, that he should take a discount? The dude is a perennial pro bowler/all pro. He's going to get his money and we should pay him.

True but he's also coming off a major injury. No way to overlook the risk......

Of course, I’d didnt say we should sign him no matter what. I was quoting someone who said that he would move on from Thomas because he wants the most $ he can get...which is absolutely ridiculous because just about every player is putting their body on the line for $. And how anybody could blame a player for that is mind boggling to me

Move on. $$$$ is all he is interested in now.
Go in another direction..
As it is for every player....

It's called negotiation, folks. Have you never done it? You don't play all your cards in the first five minutes.

Thomas desperately wants to play here, but no, he's not willing to do it for free.

4 years, $40 million, club option in year 3. Do it.

Nothing would make a bigger difference to this defense than adding an elite free safety.

And when you look at that schedule next year, the Cowboys are toast without him.

Then he can go on to the niners.......30 and coming back from a broken leg? There are others in FA to consider.

I agree Erod. Negotiation is just that. You don't start off low, now, do you?

If that's the case, then I agree. Hoping $10-11MM maybe $12MM per will get it done. If not, move on.

Can't help but think you and your Dad had a number in mind when you tried to trade for him last season Stephen, oops! Risen. You guys had to know you had to give him an extension or new deal.

Let's let the negotiations pan out before ruling this possible signing a bust!

That doesn't bother me as much as he's hoping to be NFL highest paid safety. It's interesting if you remove Berry's contract, the highest paid is well below $10M. Either way, the market will have a ton of avail free agents. Maybe the best way to go and forget ET........

EARL THOMASDB, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports free agent Earl Thomas has "no interest" in giving the Cowboys a hometown discount.
Thomas has been stumping to play for his home-state team for years, but he wants to be properly compensated to do so. That is probably especially true after last year's injury debacle. Per reporter Clarence Hill, Thomas currently maintains hope of becoming the "highest paid safety in the NFL." That could be tough seeing as he's going on 30 and coming off major injury. Eric Berry maintains current honors at $13 million per year.

If anyone thinks or believes that ET and his agent will give the Cowboys a home town discount, they didn't see the player that I saw carted off the field and flipping off his team mates and coaches. That spells ego and I'm guessing that Earls is very large. Of course everything is bigger in Texas so he may fit right in. Earl will get paid what he thinks he deserves, and I'm guessing here, but I'm guessing he thinks he deserves a lot. It's a meritocracy isn't it?

Some team will over pay him. That's FA isn't it

30 is relatively young for a free safety.

Ed Reed, Charles Woodson, and Rod Woodson played well into their 30s.

And yes, Thomas is absolutely in that class.

And a broken tibia or fibula is nothing.

And there is NOBODY in free agency remotely in his class for consideration.
