Is There Any Scenario You Envision Welcoming Garrett Back as HC?

Depressing fact of the day: since the Cowboys last won the Super Bowl in January 1996, they are one of only three teams (Lions and Commanders are the others) not to reach the NFC Championship Game.

Even more depressing? Garrett has been head coach for less than half of that time and the GM who has presided over all of it isn't going away until the day he dies.

Does it matter?

I mean seriously. You've got an ownership group that rarely gets on the same page. Each owner hires coaches independently. Very little direction. Head coaches who can't hire or fire their own staff much less players. Will any of this change under a cupcake owner or a super cheap baby owner?

Yeah, the scenario that already exists.

Jerry promoted a 29yo guy who just completed his first season coaching at any level, who was a QB coach (a position where he worked one-on-one with 3 players) to OC, where, in his second-ever season, he’ll now call all the plays while overseeing an entire NFL offense — per the team owner’s orders.

Jerry isn’t gonna fire Kellen Moore anytime soon, and he won’t fire Garrett due to Moore possibly experiencing growing pains.

If/when KM proves he’s worthy to be HC, then he’ll likely succeed JG.

In the meantime, Jerry won’t bring in an outside HC and force him to take KM as his OC, as he already failed with that approach when he forced Wade Phillips to take Garrett, lol!

:hammer: Finally, someone gets it. If we win or appear in NFCCG, that likely means rookie season as OC was a huge success. No way in hell they're going to trust an out HC with that. Garrett would then get a SHORT-TERM extension IMO.

the gm and his son are just not very good garrett is a average coach at best he has proven that I think if he gets to a nfc championship game he will get extended if he don't then he will be somewhere else

No.

Even winning a Super Bowl would have little to do with his coaching and more to do with the roster.

He is completely talent dependent and gives us no advantages on game day.

I can't like this enough. We win by beating the guy on the other side of the ball. There is no scheming or adjusting, no clock management or chess-like strategy. Zero.

The Cowboys have a tougher schedule this coming season. The Packers and Rams are coming and Philly will probably be better this year than last. I don't have any idea how good the Giants or the Commanders will be, but the right QB could make either one of them a contender(hint: it won't be Eli). If Jason pulls out a 11 and 5 or 12 and 4 season, then I think he gets the extension.

SJ and JJ have both made it clear in the media that the team needs to take a step forward in order for Garrett to be back. This might all be conjecture but if we take them at their word, what would JG have to do to be welcomed back by the fans? NFCCG appearance, NFC Title, SB appearance, SB win, or nothing at all?

Does it have to do more with how the team looks or how far they go?

Personally, he would have to win a SB for me to feel like he deserves to be back. What do y’all think?
I think he’s going to at least have to make it to the NFC Championship game.

Uh I can understand frustration for the FO but J. Cooper is probably one of the worst examples to use lol. He’s nothing more than a stop gap option at G.

Also lol I don’t think that’s the move that risked the whole season lmao I think it’s pretty evident the whole “receiver by committee” thing was the big risk we took.

I’d much rather draft a guy who will be a solid if not pretty good starter at LG than the draft bust who has trouble moving. Pretty normal FO move tbh

"trouble moving?" hold on there - he was drafted higher than any of our starting OL - 6th off the board I think, as an extremely athletic OG

starting games 5 - 16 ... Coop played as well as our all pro OL in the second half of 2017, watch *any* of the game tapes ... he handled his.

I seriously doubt Conor or Xavier will ever play as well as Cooper did when last seen in a Cowboy uniform

it was stupid not to resign him even if drafting Williams was your long term plan
instead they pay Hurns - then don't feature him, don't sign a DT, sign Xavier, and Redman ... dude - idiots in this FO

did you not notice this O didn't get better until they benched Williams for getting shoved into the backfield, repeatedly?

JG did not decide Williams would start at LG before being drafted ... JG ain't that silly - but guess who is?

Dude J. Coop broke his leg his rookie year and hasn’t been the same since. He’s a replacement level starter that’s been on 2 teams since we let him go and now 6 teams in his 7 year career. Sounds like someone you’d like to keep right?

Also why are you so obsessed with Johnathan Cooper? Lmao you might be the first poster I’ve seen pound the table for journeyman J. Coop. You’re hilarious lol

I will give Garrett credit, the team has played hard for him, even when they had every reason to quit. My biggest concern is Jerry’s ability to pick a head coach. I hate to even think about what kind of ****** that would be hired to replace JG.

My only fear is that if JJ fires Garrett, he'll go after Jeff Fisher or some other retread so he can feel 'comfortable' is his waning years.

To me it doesn't make a bit of difference who replaces Garrett. At least the new HC won't be another son that will be given chance after chance for years. Jerry won't hesitate to fire the new guy if we're not in a Super Bowl in the next five years. We could have gone through two more head coaches the past 8 years and we would be better off than we are today. I agree giving a guy about 4 years to put in his system and make it work. I believe we would have already been in a couple of Super the past 8 years if not for Garrett.

As long as there’s not a clearly better option available and the team plays hard, he should be back.

I think we have another good season and he signs another long extension unless Sean Payton comes available.
