I'll be interested to see what the deal ends up being. So far I've heard 1 year. Would've loved to have him across from Tank with the loss of Gregory.

I just dont understand the Rams salary cap

Most expensive RB
Expensive Oline
Expensive WR and another moderately expensive WR
#1 draft pick salary
Most expensive defensive player
Expensive DE now
Expensive CB

I guess they're saving at TE and LB?

The Rams proved last year they were willing to gamble aggressively in free agency, pushing $14 million in chips to the middle of the table to land Ndamukong Suh.

They’re clearly repeating that strategy this year.

Via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the one-year deal the Rams agreed to with pass-rusher Dante Fowler Jr. last night is worth that same $14 million.

The Rams traded for the former Jaguars first-rounder at the deadline last year, and he obviously made a good impression.

After registering 14.0 sacks in 39 games with the Jaguars, he added 2.0 more in eight regular season games. But his impact was felt in the postseason, as he had 1.5 sacks in three games, and his hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees which forced an interception led to an eventual game-winning field goal

-Very little dead money.
-Goff is making peanuts for a starting QB even as the #1 pick
-Although Talib and Peters are big "names", neither are in the top 15 CB's in annual salary
-Don't have average players like La'El Collins, Tyrone Crawford, and Sean Lee getting paid 10 mil a year

Interesting market value for a player only 4 sacks 2018, 16 over 47 games. Only 3 million less than DLaw made last season.

I think Fowler's draft pedigree has bought him a lot of leash he wouldn't otherwise have. He's simply never been that good.

Maybe Wade Phillips sees something in him, but $14 million for a 4-8 sack guy is definitely an overpay.

Yeah, I think they overpaid at $14 million for one year. I can see why Fowler took it before the start of free agency.

You don't think it's his market value? Other words, his agent gauged his best possible offer from other teams and gave the Ram a chance to match it. My point is, I'm not sure it's overpaid rather than actual market value.

We have to remember, teams pay for FUTURE potential, not the other way around.

I wouldn't think so, no. I think it's well above what a player like him deserves. 4 sacks on the season? His career high of 8 sacks? While I do think he player somewhat better in Wade Phillips' scheme than he did for the Jaguars, he's not worth $14 million for one year. I'd have kept Suh for one more year at that price (who they can't keep now) rather than paying Fowler.

And now, he gets a year to boost his stock and asking price even more for 2020. Great deal for the player, but I don't think it's a smart one for the team.

I like thethinking, but I'll nitpick a few things.

-Rams have over league average dead cap at $4.8M.

-Although neither Talib or Peter's have top 15 contract, the Rams have the 6th highest CAP hit allocated to CBs in the league.

-They're paying Brockers $1M more than Crawford despite Crawford being a better player. Same with paying Woods $7M. While neither Lee nor Collins have $10M cap hits.

They also have an expensive punter and kicker

-4.8 is still a low figure when you consider about a 1/3 of the league is in the double digits in dead cap.

-Talib Peter are both top corners, not surprising. Doesn't change the fact they both are on reasonable contracts and probably underpaid.

-According to https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/dallas-cowboys/ Lee, Crawford, and Collins all have $10 mil cap hits. Brockers is the only bad contract you see when looking at the Rams' highest paid players.
-Robert Woods at 7 mil is a steal, are you kidding? He's a really good player. Compare that to the the 6.25 the Cowboys are paying Allen Hurns
