He really wasn't a reliable blocker. He was so-so at best. And yes, we don't throw or run our FB all that much so it makes little sense we would pay for a FB whose best skill might be catching the football.

There is little doubt they could find a grueling blocker and special teams guy for less. This is just Jerry being Jerry.

You say there's little doubt. I say where's the proof? We lost Keith Smith in free agency last year which led to us trading for Olawale. Would you like to do that again?

If we are going to have a fullback (and the team wants one even if it uses him sparingly), then we've got to put one out of the field who is not going to be a liability. Olawale is not a liability. If we find a better option than him with a late-round pick or undrafted UDFA, then that's fine, move on. Right now, we needed a fullback who can be a starter and the number of those available is limited and it's unclear at the moment that any of them would come cheaper than what we'll be paying.

Anybody give a logical explanation on why he was given a penny of guaranteed money. Anybody? What other team would?

Exactly. A 7th round FB could fill the same roll at a fraction of the cost.

He's a starting-caliber NFL fullback, you can't just find "lots of guys" who can do that for less. On rotoworld, there are four fullbacks in this FA class listed ahead of him. If all four get lower contracts then he does, you've got a decent argument. If not, Dallas is going to have a fullback so re-signing Olawale for $2 million per year was a decent choice. Frankly, I think Dallas signed him for that because it feels that will be the going rate for starting fullbacks or even slightly below it.
Olawale sucks. PERIOD.

Makes sense why weren't going after Earl now. Had to get this stud locked up before we lost his talent.
We didn't go after ET because he wanted too much $$$ plain and simple. The guy had season ending injuries the past 3 seasons and people still wanted to sign him to top dollar at the risk of killing what cap space we have!

Let's try this.

***USER-BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1*** has him rated as the fourth-best FA at his position. http://***USER-BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1***/freeagents2019FB.php

Spotrac lists him first, but it isn't clear if that site is rating him the best. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/fullback/

There may be some more out there so please feel free to add to this.

Or could turn out like the last fullback we drafted (Shaun Chapas) in the seventh round of 2011 or the one before that (oft-injured Deon Anderson) in the sixth round in 2007 or maybe the one before that (Jamar Martin) in the fourth round in 2002.

You kind of proved the point. We lost Smith and were able to find a FB fairly quickly, that apparently you think is pretty good, in a trade where we gave up a 5th round pick but got a 6th round pick back in the deal.

And we can't move on now. We gave him $3MM in guaranteed money.

I will add...he played 10.6% of the offensive snaps last season. The FB position is not what it used to be. Someone as clever as you should know that.

We had to trade a draft pick to replace Smith, so you're OK with doing that each time, trading down a round to get a fullback when we could have just re-signed our own. And then there's no guarantee that you are going to find a fullback to trade for.

We had to fill the position with someone capable of being out there. The cost relative to the position is not high. We've got the position secured for the next three years. And frankly, if we use him better, Olawale can be a decent weapon for us from the spot.

I did clue you in to the actual snap count of the player. Perhaps you are a modern Rip Van Winkle - FBs are not what they used to be.

Clutts is a much better lead blocker, so were Fiammetta and a bunch of others. But in our offense you have to do more than that.

TWill is a better blocker than Gallup, but that doesn't mean he should be on the team either.
Good point there

How much he played doesn't matter. We are going to have a fullback on the team. He's an NFL-caliber fullback. He's a core special-teammer.

Some of you would rather just throw a body out there thinking anybody can handle that low number of snaps when it just isn't true. Romo's injury history started because he had an incompetent fullback on the field. Olawale is far from being an incompetent fullback. He's better in pass protection than run blocking, but he's not a bad run blocker. He's also a good receiver and decent runner if we would actually use him in those roles.
