I had a conversation with a buddy of mine who’s a lifetime Dolphins fan ab our recent trade for Robert Quinn. He’s obviously not excited ab the trade, but understands that the Dolphins recent fire sale of players for salary cap relief is part of the rebuild process. What I found interesting is he told me that apparently Rashad Jones is going to be the next player traded or cut. Which I found surprising bc of all the players they have let go recently, Rashad Jones is prob one of thier best players on the team.

Being that we(The Cowboys) have a need and have been basically praying ET would come to Dallas. I would love to have Jones on the team as much as I would have loved ET. So I decided to look up stats and contract details for comparison sake.. and I’m little surprised at how similar they really are. Jones is a couple years older, but if Dallas was willing to sign Earl for 2y/$20 (that was a popular rumor), I think trading for Jones could work and he definitely would be an upgrade.

The Dolphins are dumping guys to relieve salary space for the future, so I don’t believe it would cost much to trade for him either. That said, I want get others opinion. First, what do y’all think ab RJ coming to Dallas. Second, what do you think it would take to make a deal like this happen? Or would you rather just role the dice on a 2nd/3rd Rd pick at safety?

Note: this is simply speculation and a little hope on my part. I’ve listed links of stats for Jones and Thomas below to compare.

Really good player - if he hits the trade block, and there is speculation, we should be interested. All comes down to what the Dolphins are asking for.

But with our cap where it's at right now and already signing a FA safety, I feel like we are done with that unless it comes in the draft.

He'll most definitely be traded after July 1, that's when they can save 13~ million on the cap.

He'd be a good quality player, so it would be interesting. Certainly entertain the thought of it, if nothing else.

He seems like the type of Safety the Cowboys are want to add to the roster. He is a Strong Safety that had 3 INTs in 2018.

The problem is that his contract is way to big. He is scheduled to make 13M in 2019.

It will be interesting to see if the Dolphins cut him. At that point he past contract is irrelevant.

They can designate him a June 1st cut now. They won't get the cap relief until June 1st but they can cut him now if they don't think anybody will trade for him.
Kavon Frazier and Jeff Heath for Rashad.

Not arguing bc I really don’t know enough ab how the Dolphins used Jones.. but Wikipedia and NFL.com has him listed as a FS. I asked the same thing in conversation with my friend, and he stated that RJ played both positions throughout his career.

And I acknowledge he only had 3INTs (which would have lead our team), but he also played on a very average defense. I think with Xavier, Byron, Chido, that would make for a very formidable back end. Not to mention our strength at LB. Hopefully Lawrence’s contract gets ironed out and we add depth in the draft. This defense could look very nice with just a few more pieces. Imo

Yes please. People will make jokes about taking Dolphin castoffs, but him and Quinn can still play.

1. We'd have to see how his rehab from his torn landrum is going

2. This is another situation where the Dolphins would have to restructure(eat a ton of money) for the deal to work. Nobody is trading an asset/pick for Reshad unless his CAP hit is probably $8M or lower

My point about the INTs was that it's excellent for a Strong Safety.

WIki says Strong Safety for all but his 1st year if you look at the year by year breakdown below. The other Dolphins starting safety was different almost every year.

2011
Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan named Jones the starting free safety, alongside strong safety Yeremiah Bell, to begin the regular season.

2012
Jones entered training camp slated as the starting strong safety. Head coach Joe Philbin named him the starter for the start of the regular season, alongside free safety Chris Clemons.

2013
Jones and Chris Clemons remainder the starting safety duo to begin the season in their second season under defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle.

2014
On August 8, 2014, Jones was suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Upon finishing his suspension, he returned to his starting role, alongside free safety Louis Delmas.

2015
Head coach Joe Philbin retained Jones as the starting strong safety to start the 2015 regular season, opposite new free safety Walt Aikens.

2016
On January 9, 2016, the Miami Dolphins announced the hiring of Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator Adam Gase as their new head coach. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph named Jones the starting strong safety to begin the regular season, along with free safety Isa Abdul-Quddus.

2017
On March 9, 2017, the Miami Dolphins signed Jones to a five-year, $60 million contract extension with the Dolphins with $35 million guaranteed and a $9.2 million signing bonus.

Head coach Adam Gase named Jones the starting strong safety, opposite free safety Nate Allen.

2018
In the Dolphins' season opener against the Tennessee Titans, Jones recorded two interceptions in a single game for the first time in his professional career.

If he's designated as a June 1 cut, can the Cowboys negotiate with him?

Yes, players that are designated June 1st cuts are free to sign with other teams.

It is a big advantage to the player to become a free agent earlier than June 1st. Some teams will do it as a favor to the player.

The only advantage to the team is that it prevents the possibility of that player getting injured during OTAs or while working out at the team's facilities which would result in the team being on the hook for an injury settlement.

Oh, so they would cut him then, but the cut would take effect on June 1?
