I see it the other way. His agent was working hard for Lawrence, then when he fully understood what Lawrence wanted, he got the deal done for him. He maximized Lawrence's deal with the parameters he was given.

Now, a guy like Scott Boris makes his client's sign a contract that says basically, "you will sign wherever I get you the most money, no questions asked, period."

This agent didn't do that.

Something rings false there. Why did it take the agent that long to understand what DLaw wanted?

Yes, it does. To try and trade him now would absolutely WRECK our cap. You think we could absorb accelerating 65 million into our cap? That is what's guaranteed in his contract, after all.

It doesn't quite work like that.

Some of you apparently don't know that old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two Tacos in the bush."

A top 10 pick though? Im thinking about the cap as well. We've been pretty damn good in the first round, with Taco being the lone expectation in years. Id be more cautious if it was a low first rounder, but I think this front office would nail a top ten pick.

Pardon the victory lap. It's the only way the puzzle made any sense, but nonetheless, nice to have the conclusion substantiated.

Last year, drafting a DE in the top 10 (No. 5) worked out well for Denver since Bradley Chubb ended up with 12 sacks. The year before there also was only one DL taken in the top 10 (Solomon Thomas) so far he has four sacks in two seasons. In 2016, Joey Bosa and DeForest Buckner are looking like very solid picks, but from the 2015 top 10, Dante Fowler hasn't been too good, Leonard Williams has been just a little better than that and Vic Beasley has had one really good season out of four.

How many of those guys would you trade Lawrence for straight up? Maybe Chubb, Bosa and Buckner (although he'd probably play 3-tech in our scheme). That's three (at most, and I think a fair argument could be made that none are better than Lawrence) out of seven top 10 DL taken in the past four years. That's 42.8 percent.

Are you satisfied with a less than 50 percent chance at success in a trade for your best DL?

I see your point, but Im not assuming we would draft the same as those other teams. Dallas has been very, very good in the draft. Consequently, they have my confidence.

I think the likelihood of choosing another position is stronger than busting on the pick. Which would create problems as well. All said Im not complaining, Im happy to have Dlaw. Who really knows what offers where out there anyways?

It's great to hear that he never wanted to leave, but now I want to know what those teams were offering as compensation. And would the Cowboys have taken any trade that didn't include a 1st? Who was the team that was ready to pull the trigger? Indy?

Colts or Chiefs are two teams I'm guessing.......both teams drafting in the bottom 10. Colts coz their defensive is former assistant Cowboy coach and they have a ton of cap money. Chiefs coz they're moving from 3-4 to 4-3 and sent both their pass rushing specialists ( Houston and Ford ) packing.

Can’t the team you trade him to agree to take on his full contract? Or does that not negate the cap hit?
I think they take on everything except the signing bonus, and I have no idea if that can be worked into the trade or not.

I'm pretty sure Dallas would be on the hook for everything that has already been paid up front. That means signing bonus plus anything else. The Deal pays Tank 48 million at signing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isnt this totally against league rules unless given permission by the team? Like the Steelers with AB

Unless you're getting two top 10 picks, it makes no sense trading Lawrence unless you just want to be the development league for the rest of the league. We'd have to use one of those picks to and take a risk of gambling a new DE, which may not turn out and it will probably take 3 years or more.

Nope, he was tagged using the non-exclusive tag. He was free to negotiate a deal with any other team. I think it’s being misinterpreted as working on a trade but really it’d be the contract, and that team would then work with Dallas on trade terms.

Agent can say whatever he wants after deal is done. All just his word , which is meaningless. We just ate left with speculation.
