but some teams spoiled the party.

2. Trysten Hill
3. I believe they wanted Will Harris S. He went right before them and they drafted BPA that they had not even contacted. Connor McGovern.
4. Tony Pollard
4. I believe they wanted Isaiah Johnson but he went right after the Pollard pick. I believe Cominsky was the backup plan and he went right before pick 136 so they traded down.
5, They took Joe Jackson.
7. Mike Weber would have been the pick if they only had 1.

With a little luck this is what it would have looked like.

2. Trysten Hill DT
3. Will harris S
4. Tony Pollard RB
4 Isaiah Johnson CB
5. Joe Jackson DE
7. Mike Webber. RB

You’re probably close to right on that. I do like Isaiah Johnson but I like Mike Jackson almost as much.

I’d rather have McGovern than Harris, frankly, but I’m a trenches guy. McGovern is a really, really good player who will start in Dallas before too long. Smart, strong, and tough... just how I want my offensive linemen.

I don’t see much difference between the two drafts other than I really like McGovern.

Think you pretty much nailed it.

2nd round - Even though they loved Hill, I wonder who they had ahead of him that could've possibly went at 58. Stephen mentioned they lost some guys that they were on the cusp of getting, and I wonder if that applied to #58. Definitely seemed like the case in the 4th round.

3rd round - Honestly not mad at missing out on Harris. Think McGovern was better value, and Harris while solid, isn't a guy that gets the ball back to the offense.

4th round - In the post draft press conference they couldn't stop gushing over Pollard. Thought it was a reach at the time, but with as much as they talked him up you'd have to think they had at least a 3rd round grade on him. Definitely think they got sniped on I. Johnson and Cominsky. But they had to have Pollard. Not going to lose much sleep over Johnson because he was a project, and Richard still got two of his archetypes in Jackson and Westry.

5th round - Mike Jackson was their first pick in the 5th, but if they take Isaiah Johnson in the "everything goes according to plan" hypothetical, think you're right and it's Joe Jackson here.

7th - Yup, if they had taken Will Harris in the 3rd, it'd be Weber here even though they took Donovan Wilson before Weber. (Also assuming Weber lasted 30 spots later. They drafted him with the early 7th they picked up in a trade back)

I like Mcgovern and he will come in handy in the future but I think Harris would have had a larger impact this year.

Maybe so. I personally like a longer term view by the front office in the draft though.

Sure , get guys that can help, by all means, but if a player you really like is there at a position group that you highly value, then I’m fine with them adding that piece to the OL. He might even win a starting position this season. The guy is good. If he does beat out Williams, then just move the second year guy to RT and let him compete with Collins there.

And while it would be easier for a rookie SS to come in and win the position as a rookie, I don’t think Harris would do much to put Dallas over the top. I did like Harris but I would hate to have missed out on adding McGovern to the OL for him.

But like I said already, I do love the trenches, so take all that with a grain of salt.

I can live with it and if Michael Jackson ends up being better than Isaiah Johnson then we may have gotten lucky on that front as well. I have been begging for a premium pick on a safety for years though and it is clearly the weakest link on the team.

The more I look at this draft, the more I like it. Even some of the UDFA's could end up on the roster. I think we upgraded some positions and replaced some depth with cheaper options.

If the A and M safety beats out Frazier then we have cheap safety depth for 4 years that could develop into something. Frazier would be needing a new contract soon.
I think Wise has a shot at beating out Ross. We brought in several UDFA LB's that could replace Covington and maybe March Lillard with 4 years of cheap depth.

I think you’re right about Harris, but I don’t think the difference between this draft and the one they had was meaningfully different.

This team has earned our trust with three straight years of solid if not outstanding drafts.

They clearly don’t value safeties the way many on this board do. Instead, their plan is to build a team with solid players in the trenches. 4 of their 8 picks were on the offensive or defensive lines.

He might be a good player at some point but we have a total logjam at OG. This kid is the new Escobar.

Eh, I'm not sure that's the case. I'm mean, they took like two seconds to make each of their picks. Seemed like most were no-brainers (aside from Hill).

I would like to know who the guys were that they lost just before 58 as well.

Jerry said 4 of the 5 players they had in front of Hill were taken in round 1. and the other one fell off their board due to information about an injury.

I'm thinking Jonathan Abram and L.J. Collier were two of those 4, and the news about an injury to Taylor Rapp may have caused them to strike his name.

I think McGovern was an excellent, albeit extremely boring, pick.

Theyve had a depth problem for a few years now on OLine and this could resolve it.

While you cant believe everything the Cowboys say, according to Jerry they had seven things that could have gone right for them at #58 but 5 of them were gone in round one, but both were still there at #58. If that’s true they didn’t didn’t miss out on a player in round two.

That obviously wasn’t the case in other draft spots, particularly prior to the trade back at the end of round four.

I guess I look at it differently, but I don’t think safety play is the weakest link on the team. Backup RB was a drop off of epic proportions from Zeke. We were weak at DT depth. We probably need a real tight end and probably a 3rd LB. All of them may be bigger than the safety play now that we have Iloka.
