For those that like grades, (personally I think you can’t judge a player until he has been in the league for a at least 3 years) he gave the Cowboys a B-. Reported that he likes the Hill pick but concern about being coachable. He only gave 1 A to the Colts followed by 4 A- grades. The following NFC east grades:
Skins- A-
Eagles- B+
Giants- C+

Dallas Cowboys: B-
Top needs: Defensive tackle, wide receiver, safety

The Cowboys got a great rookie season from first-round pick Leighton Vander Esch a year ago, and the defense took a step forward under Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard as they won the NFC East and a wild-card game. But there were still holes, particular at defensive tackle and safety. Remember that Dallas hasn't made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 2006-07. And with no first-rounder because of the trade for Amari Cooper(Jerry Jones is OK with that deal, no matter what Cooper's new contract look like), it had to fill those needs on Day 2. Did it do that?

I'm not so sure. Defensive tackle Trysten Hill was a reach at No. 58, but I see why Marinelli might like him. He has a great motor and some physical traits, but you wonder why he didn't produce consistently in the AAC. I had a fourth-round grade on him. I would have gone safety with Taylor Rapp, Juan Thornhilland Nasir Adderley still on the board. There was good value with my second-ranked guard Connor McGovern at No. 90, and he could be insurance for Travis Frederick at center, too. The ESPN draft projection system thought highly of him.

Dallas took two running backs on Day 3 -- Tony Pollard (No. 128) and Mike Weber(No. 218) -- and there was a quiet need for someone to spell Ezekiel Elliott. Jalen Jelks (No. 241) flashed top-50 talent but never put it all together. He has measurables that make the seventh round a steal.

To not get a safety until the sixth round made me scratch my head a little bit -- that was such a glaring need. Let me ask you: Did Dallas get any immediate starters here? Cooper doesn't count. Hill is an enigmatic player, and Pollard is more of a luxury pick. I do like taking McGovern and making sure the offensive line stays a strength of the team.

That was a better grade than I was expecting. Now post draft grades a basically useless but for today this is encouraging.

The key is Hill
If he turns into the disruptive 3T we think then this becomes an A draft when you add in Cooper

If he is the uncoachable mediocre player then this is a B- or C draft because there was good value there in Jones, Thornhill and Adderly

Mel says that the Cowboys didn’t get an immediate starter, and that Cooper doesn’t count.

Why doesn’t Cooper count? Cooper was by far the best WR obtained by using draft picks in this years draft.
I guess Kiper doesn't want to count Amari Cooper because he isn't a rookie.

I can see your point but look at it this way

The advantage of drafting a first round player is that you get a premium talent for several years at a very low cost

You can use the cap to sign other players

Cooper will get paid 18 mill/yr

That is the other side

My grades....

Commanders - A
Eagles - B
Giants - B
Cowboys - C

Hill was a massive reach and clearly the Cowboys intend to get Zeke off the field and play an inferior player so he's safe and stuff. That's what the pick of Pollard told you. Less Zeke. And only for the price of a 4th round pick! Soy boys rejoice!

I'd go lower than a C but Copper and Conor McGregor are quality players.

He doesnt count. We have to pay Amari $16-18m a year and hes already heading into his fifth year.

He wouldve went top 10 in this draft anyways

The Cowboys drafted as if they had no immediate needs. It could be they have more confidence in the free agent they signed than I do. But I have to agree with Kiper. Not taking a safety until the 6th round is bizarre. I have been saying for years, you cannot have a lights out defense unless you have an impact safety. We all saw what a negative impact a safety with bad instincts can do to a defense last year. I considered safety and DT the two biggest needs but clearly safety was the bigger of the two. The kind of safety they need can be had in the 2nd round. Hill could be a good player if Marinelli can get him motivated to learn. But he has a reputation as a "big talker" and that concerns me a lot.

The Cowboys offense is decent but they are not going to light it up either, at least they didn't last year. We'll see if Frederick coming back and Connor Williams putting on some beef helps. If they don;t get better on offense, not having a safety is going to be a big problem on defense.

Geez, I sure wish you’d look at the glass half full, rather than han half empty all the time. Guess, I’m not going to teach an old dog new tricks anytime soon, huh? Lol

I’m not arguing your grade, that’s your opinion. Trust me, If I had to give a grade strictly on the picks.. I’d prob give ‘em a B maybe B- (only because I wanted a safety earlier in the draft). Side note: Include Amari Cooper as our 1st, it’s easily an A draft. Imo

Was Hill a reach? Probably. But let’s be honest, quality DL (exp interior DL)were flying off the board. The FO believes (Marinelli) Hill can be that true 3T that most have been clamoring for. And if he turns out to be a starter playing at a high level, nobody will care if we reached for him. (Nobody cares that we ‘reached’ for Travis Frederick bc he’s an AllPro)

As far as Pollard, I don’t agree drafting Pollard means anything in terms of Zeke. Pollard is the upgraded version of Tavon, Dunbar, Lucky Whitehead, etc. He’s like having all those players in one. Pollard can run between tackles as a RB, move out wide as a WR, and still has the speed like Tavon. I have more faith in Kellen Moore to utilize his talents and Pollard has more ability than others before him. Zeke will be feed on a regular basis as usual, not to mention Zeke’s blocking abilities are superior and needed. Zeke will be spelled by Pollard/Weber throughout the season to attempt to keep Zeke fresh for the playoffs, but by no means does this reduce his role or importance on the team. The improvements (addition of Fredrick and McGovern) on the OL hopefully will only catapult the run game. I see the direction their going and it seems they want to get back to a dominate run game of 2016. The defense is better than last year on paper regardless of what people think. If the Offense can control the clock and run the ball down opponents throats, the Defense will be able to attack and bully teams.

No one is talking about the de facto second wave of player acquisition.. we other teams are forced to let good high priced players go after the draft. Personally I believe Dallas isn’t done adding a few more player like a veteran RB, Safety, etc.. we have a very good, young team.. now is the time to see the glass half full.

And yes, my glass is full of kool aid.

I can’t really argue with that assessment from Mel. It is a little bit higher grade than I would have given initially. But we will see in a few years how accurate or inaccurate it is.

Mel published his top 300 list the day before the draft and in it he had Hill 189th overall. The Cowboys took him at 58. He was being kind in his grading.
