"Limited" only means he won't be playing every snap. He's never played every snap so good luck with your idea that the other tight ends not named Witten will make any major contribution as long as Witten is on the active roster. The fact that tight end run blocking was not as good last season just means Witten was missed. The other TEs just have to improve, which can be done at practice. They aren't going to outwork Witten for starting time. I don't know where you got the impression Witten was coming back one more season to sit on the bench. That's just dumb.

Maybe you should pay more attention:

Jason Witten agrees to one-year, $5 million and 25 snaps a game

Jason Witten agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract with the Cowboys, according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, but only after the sides agreed to 25 snaps a game.

The tight end averaged 65.5 snaps per game in 2017 when he played 98.4 percent of the team’s offensive plays. But Witten turns 37 in May and has missed a year.

He knows he can’t play as many snaps as he previously did and also doesn’t want to be a “progress-stopper” for the team’s young tight ends, per Hill.

Witten could play a role similar to the one Antonio Gates did for the Chargers this season. Gates, 38, averaged 22.8 snaps per game in playing 36.6 percent of the plays.

Witten ranks fourth in NFL history in receptions with 1,152, behind only Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez and Larry Fitzgerald.

The Dallas Star story you linked to doesn't even mention the 25 snap limit. In fact that snap limit was never a thing that Witten has acknowledged was agreed upon... Just one year at $5 million.

I will believe the 25 snaps a game when I see it. If Witten is producing as a blocker and helping the team move the chains do you really think they will go by a snap count? I don't see him with 80 to 90% of the offensive snaps as he has through out his career but I don't think the 25% is a firm number either.

I don't if the other tight ends don't play well enough to keep his numbers down. I agree that it's not a firm number. I think it's just their way of saying they plan to limit his snaps. Plans go out the window, though, if he's clearly the best tight end on the team, which he has been throughout his career.

The other tight ends will have to show that Witten deserves to be held to limited snap count. If not, I don't doubt he'll be playing 80 to 90 percent of the snaps again.

I just think where Witten still has an edge is blocking ability. Unless Jarwin or Shultz can show improved blocking I think Witten will see more than 25 snaps in a game. I would love to see Jarwin more involved in the passing game as he came on strong late in the season but his blocking is still a question mark at this point

I agree. Our run blocking at TE last year left a lot to be desired so it's probably going to make or break Jarwin or Schultz's chances of getting the majority of the snaps. Just Witten's presence on the team puts them behind that eight-ball, so they are going to have to really stand out to keep snaps away from him.

Just going by highlights I like the Mitch Hyatt pickup. Maybe he will be overmatched in the NFL but I always like the UDFA pickups who were 3-4 year starters on the best teams and one of the leaders of those teams. Those guys sometimes just find ways to be productive players.

One thing for sure is 2017 saw Dak get sacked 32 time to 56 last season and while some seem to put it all on Dak I don't think it was an accident that not having Witten in the lineup was a contributing factor. Jason has always been that safety net for the QB be it Romo or Dak and of course his ability to block and chip rushers. No doubt I would love to see Jarwin or Shultz prove they can be complete TE

Still looking for Mike Bell S from Fresno he is a hard thumper Strong safety who gets the guy down by himself is ok in coverage not the best but defenitly a guy who can beat out some guys in Training camp

I think I mentioned that when we re-signed Witten. A lot of fans want to harp on his lack of ability to get down the field, but he still has the ability to create and find openings underneath, which allows our QB to get the ball out of his hands. Too many times last season I watched Dak start to throw and then pull the ball down only to get sacked.

Schultz and Jarwin may have more downfield ability than Witten, but for whatever reason, they were not the safety net the QB needed. I don't know if that's more on Linehan or on them. I'd love to have a dynamic tight end, but he's got to do the "little" things as well and I believe that was missing from our offense last season.

One thing in Witten's favor this year is the changes at receiver. With Dak and Dez unable to connect, defenses concentrated on taking away our short passing game because they knew that Beasley and Witten were the main threats. With Cooper and even Gallup able to stretch the field and Cobb being more rangy as well, teams won't be able to essentially double the underneath stuff as much.

I remember when I thought Pat Watkins could be all that...
He did start at S as a rookie. He also was a good special teams player in the NFL. He was injured a lot that stunted his career. He went to the CFL, became All CFL CB 2xs, and Grey Cup Champion.

If we get more or the same out of Westry that is not a bad UDFA..

We were more concerned with a compliment and a backup for Zeke than adding a real weapon at TE.
I do not understand why this is a problem for you. Witten is back babeeeee and your Jarwin slander will carry grave consequences for you in the afterlife.

And he's forgetting we have Rico. One of these years, he's going to play a full game.

Remember when we were told that Jason Witten coming back wouldn't cause the Cowboys to ignore TE in the draft?
Gotta pray that ignoring TE had more to do with them being confident that one of Jarwin / Schultz is going to make a big step this year and not that they think JW has it under control...

I still can't seem to find anything on Grambling State K Marc Orozco. Anyone have an idea where he ended up? I'd like for us to bring in someone who can actually challenge Maher.
