Look who was throwing him the ball the last 4 years. No wonder he was just "meh". but seriously, Aaron Rodgers had a down year in 2018. I blame Danica.

It’s what you do in free agency. We have guys who can excel in the slot. Cobb was all about depth and competition and making sure you don’t have to draft a guy for need higher than you should.

Maybe Cobb has a great year or maybe he doesn’t make the team....so what? It was a good signing that doesn’t tie us to him. If he doesn’t make the team, it means we have other guys outperforming him.

*All* our returning TEs and WRs beat Cobb in yards per target last year. Even Rico and Noah.
He gets 40+ yards per game, but the efficiency per target was poor, and even his yardage totals have been consistently sliding for years.

People are talking like he's a lock for the team, and I don't see it in these numbers. He looks like a Nolan Carroll. We signed thinking to cover ourselves, but don't have to stick with him if other guys are panning out.

I'm hoping they get a discount out of Hurns and use him as our slot possession WR.

He was hurt and GB was getting dysfunctional. A major upgrade over the slow rapper.

Cobb and Witten...aren’t they mostly here for a veteran presence on third down?

we need a complimentary receiver, not another #1 at this point. if he can be a good #3 and gallop steps up, no harm no foul.

what other WR's were around that were better for us to sign?

So you rip Cobb for his last four years of production but then say you hope Hurns, who has actually played WORSE than Cobb the last four years takes over the slot spot?

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense.

That's a big part of it, and also to improve the abysmal red zone numbers. Nobody should forget that we were among the worst in the league in that area and it was a key reason for the team's struggles. More than anything else, that's what Garrett and Moore are tasked with changing and improving.

Having two seasoned vets in Cobb and Witten to help the young quarterback is a nice start. As is getting your All-Pro center back in the middle.

Plus Martin being fully healthy.

I'd still rather have Cobb than Beasley. I feel Cobb is a threat to the defense. Beasley I always felt the defense knew he wouldn't beat them deep

I'm also hoping for a more physical presence at left guard, whether that's an improved Connor Williams (if he stays there in 2019), Xavier Su'a Filo (who I feel is more physical than Williams), or the rookie Connor McGovern. The dropoff in power inside between Williams and Looney vs Cooper and Frederick the year before was stark, and a big reason why the offense struggled.

Yes. And when Beasley hit the field, you always knew where he would be and what he was doing. He was a one-trick pony. Great at that one trick, but still, just one.

His yards/reception the past 4 years are better than Beasley (11.0 vs 10.3) and better than Witten (11.0 vs 9.7).

Small Sample Size
Rico and Jarwin don't have enough catches for yards/reception to be meaningful.

Outside WR vs Slot WR

Cobb/ Beasley are slot WRs. Slot WRs have lower yards/reception than outside WRs.

Cobb was much better than Beasley earlier in his career and his "declining" years have still been better than both Beasley's career yards/reception and Beasley's past 4 years.

Beasley (past 4 years):
yards, receptions, average
2355, 228, 10.3

Cobb (past 4 years):
2675, 243, 11.0

Beasley (career):
3271, 319, 10.3

Cobb (career)
5524, 470, 11.8

yards/reception
Beasley
8.5 2012
9.4
11.4
10.3
11.1
8.7
10.3
2018

Cobb
15.0
11.9 2012
14
14.1
10.5
10.2
9.9
10.1
2018
This is indicative of usage, more than anything. Cole Beasley wins every time against man coverage, Cobb doesn't.

Outside of that, there isn't much to talk about.

Only problem I see with Cobb has been health in recent years between hamstring and ankle it has slowed him down.

He was injured much of last season, and was only able to start 6 games. As for the last 4 years, sure they were down from 5 years ago, but the thing to keep in mind is the Cowboys weren't looking for a #1 or even #2 WR. If Cobb's stats were like they were 5 years ago he would have been way out of our price range. We are looking for a strong slot receiver to fit in with Cooper and Gallup, and if Cobb is healthy he will be ideal.
