Welcome back, Street! The beach does tend to have that effect on the land locked. I spent most of a rum swilling vacation trying to figure out how to make a living in Florida. I'm certain I'd show up for work damp from the salt water. I figured I'd be fired from at least the first two jobs. If you come up with any ideas, share them with the class.

I cannot tell you the difference it made. I love my job, but I considering making a change . I had some real positive reflection laying on the beach doing freaking nothing. I was thinking...If take a step back and think, taking candy from a baby is actually the responsible thing to do.

Afternoon Pops and friends. It's supposed to rain today and I've politely waited for the promised rain before kicking myself into the back yard for a little sweating and swearing. I have one small area that's an oasis in need of a water feature. The water feature in question is stored and will require more cussing and sweating than I had planned to do today. It will be too hot to contemplate such frivolity soon, so I need to get in gear which is why I'm here instead. Procrastination rules!


I'm in the family business, Street. Seeing relatives on a daily basis in a stressful environment is just as much fun as it sounds. It's my retirement plan at the end of the day. I'm planning to live long enough to enjoy some of that and watch our Cowboys win the Super Bowl again.

This gives me flashbacks of Hurricane Harvey. Our house survived the flood but many folks we know didn’t and some are still rebuilding.

I don't believe the water has ever gotten this high...although one of the restaurants a block away is now taking on water in their basement. I suppose time will tell. Yesterday it was announced we broke a flood record set in 1993.

My employer is on the ground level and owns the building I live in (downtown business district) so I certainly hope it doesn't come up this high, but I'm not gonna lie... there's a certain excitement around this. Don't get me wrong, I do have total sympathy for everyone impacted by this. Unfortunately it's one of those obvious possibilities you face when you want that river view. There's a measure of spring 'flooding' every year for those living by the river but it doesn't happen often that it gets this bad. I can't imagine how it is for those who face even more dangerous/violent destruction each year during the hurricane seasons and in areas where tornadoes are prevalent, or even earthquakes. The flood waters can be dangerous, but for you folks dealing with all that year after year I'm sure you could do without that 'excitement'. For us in the Midwest the farmers really take the hit. The ground was so saturated from all that snow this past winter, and now all this rain. They probably won't have fields dry enough to plant for quite a long time. We've had so much rain it just stands in the fields now. Even on the higher ground there's just no place for it to go. Can't help but think if all this rain were more snow...

And people who live on the lake are taking their chances just like people on the Gulf Coast or in Tornado Alley.

Nature, in this case weather, can be cruel and heartless and I sympathize with those that are it's victims. However, these natural occurrences reveal just how dense some people can be. The authorities told these people in a camper to get to higher ground and get off the Llano River the night before the river crested and they ignored them. Four people perished in a flash the next morning. I just shake my head every time we get some flash flooding down here that they have to keep imploring people to not drive through flood waters. The rescue people were stretched thin trying to help the real innocent victims and they had numerous people that had put themselves into real trouble by nothing more than ignoring sound and life saving advice.

When we lived in New Orleans, my wife made friends at work with Carolyn, a Nawlins native. We weren't there long before we got our first hurricane warning and man were we excited. Nothing like a hurricane party in New Orleans hosted by two morons that dodged tornadoes in Arkansas. We called the revelers to come to our place because we were closest to the happening. Carolyn shows up at our door and tells us I need to tell you a story. I don't know if you saw this movie made about these people that decided to ignore the warning and stay on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and have a hurricane party but that was more than real to her because she lost her brother and they all lost their lives that day. We cancelled the party and went to stay with her away from the happening.

I used to think I was smarter than nature, can't hurt me. There is nothing more on this earth that I fear and respect than nature. A flood in 2007 in North Texas and a tornado in 2008 in Lone Grove, OK taught me that nature is both beautiful and deadly at the same time. 14 souls gone simply because they didn't heed the warnings. And if one doesn't respect nature, it will teach you a tough lesson before you can change your mind.
