For many decades now, the Cowboys have had a knack of attracting some of the best free agent collegians around. This year appears to be another exceptional one to add to their noteworthy collection. Along with many, if not most, of you, I'll try to keep tabs on who they are and what they might contribute to the current team. Join those doing so, if you care to. It's a year of exceptionally talented free agent acquisitions. Well done, scouts!

They gave Frazier the chance to take that box SS role in 2017, and they preferred Heath, even though it's his worst role and it put him at a zillion snaps per game. The most for defensive players.

From the point of view of the team, Frazier is basically a free agent on a 1 year contract. He has a slight edge over Iloka in that cutting Iloka helps with comp picks a smidgen relative to cutting Frazier. They'll much prefer playing Wilson for box SS snaps if he can handle it.
I'm aware of all that. At the same time McClay didn't have to mention Frazier, but he did and he talked him up, is what I'm saying...so my pondering is has anything changed in the building that you or me is not privy to.

via the draft and UDFA.

probably a Cowboys draft day record.

It does not speak to future stars, but it is a positive thing....

It's only a positive thing if the evaluations are correct. It could easily be a negative thing. Showing their grades are out of whack with the rest of the league to our detriment.

Can't see Frazier being cut.
Unless they only keep 8, which I doubt. Even at that I will go with him even over the drafted DB's, until I see them on the field or read TC reports about them.

Right now my 8 are Jones, Awuzie, Lewis, Brown, Woods, Iloka, Heath, Frazier
If they keep 9 or 10, which is most likely, those spots will be between Thompson, M. Jackson and Wilson. Since they like to keep their draft picks. Thompson the odd man out, unless he can beat out Frazier or even Heath.

I know a lot of fans do not Like Heath and / or Frazier for what reasons they have, and I can't argue against that. They have legitimate reasons.
Other that can come into this mix is Westry and I think they liked Olumba a little last year too.

Will be some interesting TC competition for sure. At DB as well as DL and those last spot at WR, unless they keep 7.
Don't see Frazier going either. Gotta have a sure thing in the bag before letting go of experience.

If that board is good, cuts are gonna be real tough this year.
And the team should be deeper.

I think it's much like Broaddus said on the Draft Show with Will McClay when this number was brought up:

"You're either going to be really right, or really wrong".

Meaning that your board was really good and you acquired a lot of talented players, or your board sucked and your grades of both those you drafted and those you didn't were way off.

I'm going with the former, and everyone in that room seemed to feel that they were both very good and very fortunate in the players they were able to acquire.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend to everyone to listen to that Draft Show with McClay. Lots of insight into theCowboys thinking prior to, during, and after the draft.

I'm very curious about the rookie mini-camp next week. The first time this rather large group of guys is all together. The Cowboys home website should be featuring some interviews Thursday when the rooks show up to get their gear.

I may be in the minority, but I'm most excited to hear about Clemson T Mitch Hyatt and Indiana T Brandon Knight. I felt that interior line was in good shape even before the McGovern pick, but it now looks loaded. My concerns were at tackle, especially with Collins recovering from major surgery and going into a contract year and not expected to be resigned. Add that to Tyron Smith injuries and back issues and the OT positions had me worried.

Given his resume and experience, I was shocked that Hyatt wasn't drafted and consider it a real coup that this team could add him to their offensive line group. Kudos to the Cowboys staff on that one. And Knight is being described as a bully and I always like to hear that description for an offensive lineman. I'm hopeful that either or both might be part of the future.

Mark Columbo's job just got a lot harder but at the same time he has to be a very happy coach these days. The quality of new guys they are giving him to work with is unexpected. Even if we end up keeping ten or eleven its going to be hard to decide who that O-line group is going to be. We will end up cutting some very good players. Zak Martin, Travis Frederick, Tyron Smith, Connor Williams, La'el Collins, Joe Looney, Adam Redmond, Xavier Su'a-Filo, Cameron Fleming. Where do players like Connor McGovern, Mitch Hyatt and Larry Allen Jr fit in?

I agree on Hyatt. Watching his tape, he may lack some functional strength, but he does not get beat around the edge, is a plus run blocker, is technically sound, and four year starter on a national championship team. Can’t believe someone did not spend a 6 or 7 on him. Can be swing tackle next year.

I think Larry Allen Jr is a legacy pickup and I think he's a prime practice squad candidate. But like you said, the pressure is now on Colombo to get this line back to its former standing. No excuses.

That's what I'm thinking. He's a prime redshirt candidate with a year to improve his anchor strength in an NFL weight training program. That said, I wouldn't expose him to waivers and I'm doing all that I can to find a place for him on my 53.

It seems like at the moment a great haul but once they get to OTAs and then training camp then we will see how it plays out. If some of the draft picks (5th round through 7th) play out along with several UDFAs then we will really see how things are effective. I wouldn't count any guy out or in at the moment as injuries will play a factor and who knows if a guy like Frazier or M. Collins or Taco or L. Collins get beat out then the Cowboys could pick up some late round choices from other teams hit with injuries in those spots. At the very least, it appears we will have one heck of a practice squad.

Another thing to remember is that I believe the most rookies every to make the team in one year was I believe the old dirty dozen from several decades ago. If ten make it then that is great but if 12/13 make it then it would be a WOW moment.

I believe 6 make the active roster: Hill, McGovern, Pollard, M Jax, Weber, Wyatt. Maybe Joe Jax if Taco cut or traded. Rest to PS.

Can you imagine Taco being cut after just two years? I couldn't rule it out, but how awful would that pick have to be to cut bait and cut the player outright after just two years? That would be pretty incredible.
