If I remember right, he said:
  • Everything that Connor Williams was supposed to be at guard.
  • ****** nightmare for anyone who gets in front of him.
  • He not only stops his guy, he finishes him.
  • I do good, bad, ugly breakdowns. He only has good.
  • The one thing that remains constant - his guy is out of the play.
  • A third round grade on this guy? We got a steal.
  • Man among boys.
  • My favorite draft pick of the last 2 years. I like this guy coming in more than anybody.
  • His guys do not make plays, whoever he blocks.
  • I can't say enough positive things about him.
  • He's the guarantee that Connor Williams will no longer be a guard.
  • Day one starter.
He reminds me of the Frederick pick. Experience at G and C. Projected as a third rounder. Dinged on his lateral agility, quickness, and pass protection. But smart with power in the base and an NFL ready anchor.

That worked out pretty well for us last time. If everyone stays healthy, the run blocking should be incredible this year.

If Rudy gets cute at the goal line and isn't just running, he should be pantsed and stuffed in a locker.

I don't know if he starts Day 1, but I think he's starting by the end of the year. Even so, he'll get significant playing time.
I'm kind of excited by the pick, actually. I like Garrett's philosophy of replenishing the offensive line. That's where football is won.
While the Commanders are collecting all these defensive linemen (many from Alabama), teams are going to need guys to block them.
I think we have a Super Bowl roster. Super Bowl coaching?:facepalm:

This prevents Dallas from having to pay La'el Collins. Good pick.

In fact, I'd see if Conner Williams can play right tackle right now. Looney is already better at right guard than Connor, and perhaps McGovern, too.

I'm not familiar with this dude, but between this and Bob Sturm's good film review, I feel much better with this pick.

If it saves us $10m by not having to pay La'el then it might make even more sense. I agree with everyone saying let C. Williams and L. Collins battle at RT - along with Looney we will have better OL reserves than some teams have starters.

One of those deals where you can’t pass up the player.

Drafting them keeps the balance. Both Conner's are affordable and they will keep drafting these guys on the second day to keep that OL stocked.

The best improvement of the organization has been their attention to the foundation of a football team. That's the reason they've won the East two of the last three years and I think they'll go for that LT on day one of the draft by 2021, if not 2020.

YESSIR! It all starts in the trenches!

Problem for Williams is that he should not have been a G. He is a talented guy and will be a quality T once these morons admit putting him at G was a mistake. They love to think they are smarter than everyone else in Dallas.

That certainly explains why Williams played well at OG in the playoffs last year. Because he can't. or something.

A third round grade on this guy? We got a steal.

Agree overall but a couple of nitpicks, Dallas had a high second round grade on McGovern (where they rated Frederick as well). Dallas had no intention of drafting an OG but he was way to good to pass on at 90.

Also its really premature to push Williams off OG at the moment, rookies rarely start in the NFL and unless they are a high first rounder, they usually put up a rookie season like Williams did with real problems adjusting.

The most likely scenario is that McGovern is a rotational OG this year and the positions with him and Williams sort themselves out next year.

For people who don't subscribe, this was Sturm's conclusion on McGovern:

Put me down as very impressed with McGovern after the film review. I cannot believe he was available at pick No. 90, because he is a plug-and-play starter and there are teams with far greater issues than the Cowboys on the offensive line. McGovern may be the steal of the 2019 NFL Draft throughout the league and could be the best player the Cowboys picked this weekend. Time will tell, but the tools are all there.

Pretty sweet, we will have not one, but two reserves that would start on some teams.

I kind of feel sorry for McGovern as many of the fan base seems to have almost unobtainable goals for him his rookie season. He is almost the Anti-Travis Frederick and will more likely be closer to Lael Collins.

Travis had the luxury of being a 1st Rounder that "could have been available in the third", so therefore the EXPECTATIONS were of him being a terrible pick and an average at best lineman. When he proved to be a Great Player, when that expectation was not really there, he gain a lot of fans for "beating the odds".

But Lael Collins, a guy who for all intents and purposes, was going to be a 1st Round pick until he became a Person of Interest in the death of his ex-girlfriend less than 48 hours before the draft, the expectation was that he was going to come into Dallas and could be a piece of the offensive line for a decade or so. Now, many are wishing and hoping that he is traded away so the Cowboys get something for him before he walks via Free Agency.

I DO NOT HATE the McGovern pick. Actually, IMO, he is one hell of a steal and has the potential to be up there with Prime Smith, Martin, and Frederick. But I am not expecting him to do so in his Rookie Year, and it may take an injury or trade for him to even start this year as we are 7-8 o-line players deep with significant NFL starting experience and it's a much different type of line that he is coming into than Smith, Martin or Frederick did. If McGovern, as a player, was as good as the YouTube video says he was with "No bad, no ugly", then he would have never been available in the 2nd Round, let alone in the 3rd. EVERY PLAYER to ever go into the NFL had something they needed to learn or improve on, and McGovern is no different, therefore his expectations should be of that of a new hire at a new job. He may have a great skill set, but he still need to learn the trade.

I really do hope he comes in and meets everyone's lofty expectations in his Rookie Year. BUT IN THE CASE THAT HE DOES NOT, I really hope that he is not given the "<name> sucks because he was not an All-Pro his rookie year" that so many of our young players have received over the past several years.

Just because he is not Great and/or does not start in 2019 does not mean he was a bad pick. Please remember that.

The competition at LG will make both players and team better. If McGovern loses, he gets a full season of NFL coaching and weight training before assuming the starting spot in 2020. If Williams loses, he gets a full season to prep as a gameday backup and transition to starting RT for 2020. I don't see either scenario as a loss.

Neither do I.

But in either scenario, I can easily see plenty of "<McGovern / Williams> was a terrible draft pick we could have used for a starting <name position here (most likely safety)>."

I think they planned to move him to T all along, but wanted to get their "best five" on the field, including the young guy. So like Collins, he's LG until it's time to move to RT.

That time could be this season.
