Not sure why you guys put yourselves through this every year
You already know this, but it's my favorite position in football. Loved playing it, love coaching and recruiting it. I still can't believe we haven't had an impact safety back there since Darren Woodson and a pre-Kelly Rowland Roy Williams.
At this point, it's like the Front Office is playing chicken with the position. They've entrenched themselves into this stance that the position barely matters versus almost everyone (fans, media, other teams) who sees this as a weakness for the team. I think we're like bottom 4 in the league on spending on the safety position and while this Front Office has really improved, I just don't understand their stubborn stance on a position that to me is more valuable than ever in today's pass-happy game. I also think this Front Office likes to appear clever and goes against the grain to attempt to show that. They knew they needed a safety. They brought in a bunch before the draft and visited with at least three free agent safeties. I just think they mishandled the draft or prioritized some other players and in their usual manner, tried to spin it after the fact, that they weren't really all that interested in adding a safety.
I'll hold out hope yet again. I really like potential free agent Justin Simmons (Broncos), who we allegedly really liked in the draft that year.
I love Grant Delpit, but like many have said, he will go very high like the last stud LSU safety Jamal Adams.
I like Clemson's Isaiah Simmons and Michigan's Khaleke Hudson, who both play a more hybrid linebacker/safety position for their respected college teams. I see them both as Kam Chancellor-type strong safeties who can stay on the field as nickel linebackers on passing downs.
