Joe Jackson shows at least an admirable degree of talent for competing well enough to win a contributing role at DE. Let's hope he impresses one and all in TC and beyond. He's evidently a better physical specimen than most and has Marinelli, Lett and possibly Ware to guide him. That's an excellent degree of expertise in anyone's estimation. Here's hoping he'll make the most of his opportunity. There'll obviously be some intense competition at DE this year, which always helps to maximize a rookie's development. I like his chances of impressing the staff enough to win a spot in the rotation.
read my last comment. I think its accuate of joe. Good post btw.

joe Jackson is what my old football coach called a mudder. A heavy handed good player that keeps his mouth shut and works his tail off to get better...does nothing exceptional but just shows up and does his job consistently. That's what he is. All good teams need guys like that. Foundational players.
Not only that, but if he can learn a little technique, like how to beat the guy in front of you w/o just trying to plow through him, he might be a lot more.

Our PS will be poached apart this year.

That is said every year but it never happens.

Not trying to be negative about it or against your post. But every year fans, including myself think we have all this depth that we can trade a few. That never seems to happen. Nor does our PS get poached. I only recall the great Darius Jackson getting claimed by the Browns, when the needed a RB off waivers when we tried to get him to the PS. After McFadden was activated off of IR.

We should have a strong PS this year. But other teams passed on these players also. And their teams are set, as well, they "like their " guys as our coaches likes ours.

I think the same this year, the DL seems deep enough we could make a few trades. Same with the OL, but supposedly we already turned down an offer or offers at this point. But will any trades happen. I am not holding out any hope they will.

Depending on what they think of Hyder, it's basically Jackson, Jelks, and Armstrong competing for one spot at DE, depending on what they want to do with Hyder. I mean...

Quinn - Woods - Hill - Lawrence
Crawford - Covington - Collins - Charlton
Hyder

Not a lot of room for projects...

Yes Hyder is a wild card here. Has he overcome his injury enough to be like he was a few years ago.
Remember Kony Ealy from last year. Many, as I did too, thought he could come in here and help. He didn't and was released. He lost what he was had.

I do think they can go with 10 DL though. With Armstrong and Jackson for that last spot, as I have Armstrong making the roster.
Jackson and Jelks, or just Jackson to the PS. If Hyder doesn't make it, then maybe Jackson and Armstrong, and Jelks to the PS.

If they only go 9, then the 1st 8 you have listed, with the 9th man competiton as you posted, less Jelks.

Yea - I don't mean to say that Hyder is a lock, but he's different than Ealy because he's coming off of an injury and a scheme change, which is a bit different than Ealy. I think he's a lot less of a wild card for that reason, but it's possible he doesn't have the burst that Marinelli wants I guess.

They did trade 1 or more bottom of the roster players last year.

DB to KC for an OL.

I think there was another low level player traded away but I don't remember the name.

IMO the Cowboys have improved at manipulating roster moves in recent years.

One thing they did last year was to cut veteran players and then re-sign them after other moves were made instead of cutting young players they would lose on waivers.

Example:
Sept 1 WR Deonte Thompson cut (veteran not subject to waivers)
Sept 2 WR Brown moved to IR
Sept 3 Thompson re-signed

What they need to work on now is getting proper compensation in the trades.

They always done that with the roster at the last cut down.

The OL I believe was Pat Ehringer, who then injured his knee. I can't recall the DB but I think he made the KC roster. I think they wanted Olumba, but Dallas said no. But the DB they got was becoming a fan favorite of a few at least.

A fellow can dream about having a stocked with talent PS.

I typically think it’s far too convenient and usually ill-fitting to compare present day Cowboys to former Cowboys (e.g. “Zeke reminds me of Emmitt!”), but I really do see shades of Jim Jeffcoat with Joe Jackson.

Not sure who will be better? Joe or the Oregon DE. I do like both.

Considering we did not have a day one pick, I’ve honestly never had higher hopes for a draft class than this one.

If we can hit on maybe 4 if these guys (drafted and Undrafted), it’ll be yet another successful draft and keep us young and competitive.

I'm trading in my hopes for a deck of marked cards. Hope the house doesn't find out :muttley:

It will but it seems like there is a lot less of that than there was in the past. In the past you saw half the PS filled by guys signed from another team and now its only one or two spots. It seems like a trend league-wide, it may be because teams want someone who already knows their system or something - but it seems like there is a lot less movement between teams.

At least one of our DL will get signed away if everyone stays healthy, but we are still going to have a loaded PS.
They need to change the rules so that PS players can’t be poached until their 2nd consecutive season on the PS.

Like others here at CZ, DE Joe Jackson seems intriguing to me. He appears to have the type of talent to do well if he listens to the coaches. The Miami Hurricanes' rookies are often good bets to succeed more so than not, which also bodes well for CB Mike Jackson, too, imho. We've managed to pick up some promising rookies in the draft this year, as has been the case for a good while now.
I'd say TC should prove interesting for the Jacksons.

Olumba made it to the Cowboys practice squad so they could have had him. But on Charvarius Ward, he started for them last year and is expected to start this year as well. Their coaching staff said that he got better and better every week.

I really wonder if there is a handshake deal among teams to minimize how much poaching goes on. It seems like it used to 5 - 8 players per practice squad and now its only 1 or 2 at most.
