Dez was a good returner his rookie year. Took two to the house IIRC. 63 yards and 93.
Probably could of taken more to the house if it wasn't for him breaking an ankle on a kickoff later that year. Sure the FO/staff didn't want to risk him any more on special teams as he finally started to gel with Romo.

Check out the block from Issac Holt. Where did he come from? The bench? :flagwave:

That play was so important. It literally won the game and put the Cowboys in the playoffs while eliminating the eagles.

This play was essentially Dallas getting past their demons with respect to the Eagles. Didn’t they lose eight straight to Philly coming into this one? Not to mention, a few weeks earlier the Eagles lit up the Cowboys in Irving, sacking Aikman 11 or 12 times - Gang Green held us under 100 total yards that afternoon.

Fast forward to this miserable December day at the Vet. Our offense couldn’t get much going before the Martin TD return. I think we had half our total yards after this play - the big plays coming late Beuerlein to Irvin. Fortunately, we were dealing with Jeff Kemp, not Randall Cunningham.

This play was massive because it sort of took the veil off this seemingly unbeatable Eagle mystique. Washington was running away with the division, but we at least felt like we could compete. With Philadelphia, they dominated the Cowboys ever since the Buddy kneel-down game. Kelvin Martin did a lot to exercise those demons.

For me, this was moving on from batteries in snowballs, the Luis Zendejas bounty, the Aikman ragdolling, Buddy Ryan, all of it.

Plus we really needed this win to get the wildcard.
You put the importance of this together better than me.
That return was HUGE.

That is a mystery on Holt. Only thing I can think of is he either got hurt or was being lazy. Why else would he still have been at that end of the field?

OMG this is a game I will never forget. I was in the Marines, living in NC. My father in law tried to get me tickets to see Cowboys Giants, but they were sold out. We have relatives in Jersey. So he bought me tickets to week 15 in Philly. He bought around week 3. I was supposed to go with my wifes uncle.... oooops, that was the same weekend as his 1st son's birthday, so he couldnt go. I went alone. When he bought the tickets, nobody knew that this game would decide the NFC east title. This was my first ever Cowboys game. I pulled up and parked, right in front of an older Eagles fan. I was 21 at the time. I get out of the car with my Cowboys sweatshirt and Cowboys hat on. The guy says... oh great, im parking next to a Cowboys fan? He was cool as hell. Invites me to go tailgate with his friends. They fed me, free beer, walked me up and showed me to my seat. If you didnt watch this game, you cant imagine how good Philly's Gangrene Defense was. Reggie White at his best, Jerome Brown..... that Eagles team was damn good. The Cowboys were 2 seasons removed from a 1-15 season, and you could sense we were on our way up. What a FREAKING memory! My father in-law passed away in July..... I will never forget him always thinking of others, and getting me to my first Cowboys game. Fast forward 28 years later and going to Cowboys home season openers is now a family tradition for us.... we live in Ca. The Dallas Cowboys means so much more to me than just a football team. I am one lucky SOB that I now get to share them with my wife and 4 daughters!

This was such an exciting time considering how many years we struggled in a row... Although things started turning around in 90... 1991 put the league on notice.

Holt just basically lowered his shoulder and took the guy out.

Looks pretty violent by today's little delicate standards. Definitely a fine or something.
Careful, Ive been called out for being a Neanderthal barbarian on these forums for far less.
The cult of delicate standards has been embraced by a society that allows their children to live at home well into their 40s.

He went for the punt block, so he ran pass the punter. Why would he run back for coverage when the returner is usually tackled within 15 yards after catching the punt?

Oh to go back to 1991. Sophomore year of high school.

Mine too. We weren't that good yet. But we had lots of good days ahead. I really thought fate was kind to me for giving me not one, but TWO opportunities to gloat to all my junior high and HS friends before we graduated.

Perhaps give himself the best chance to get in the play and make a block that would help spring the return man rather than just assume the player is going to get tackled soon after fielding the punt? Suppose Martin had needed that block 10-15 yards before he got it?

I was at that game! That game was the winner goes to the playoffs and the loser go home. I knew when that return happened that the Dallas Cowboys has arrived. Two years after being the worst team in the NFL Jimmy had made us a winner.

Cool note about that game and play. The Eagirl special teamer that was hit and hurt by Holt was the cousin to a friend that I went to the game with. He got us the tickets.

Remember this like it was yesterday! Love K-Mart...was an unheralded piece of the puzzle, especially on 3rd downs.
