Hometown discounts are like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow
You can look but you ain’t finding it
well bye then..what that means to me is a player is willing to take less then the max ie not trying to be highest paid at his postion and just go to the highest bidder, take less stay with those that gave you a shot...if not im not keeping the guy at highest paid LB in the league.. Tank was overdone but at least he fell short of highest paid by 2 spots..

They won’t all be highest paid but they will all get as much as they can
Players only take discounts late in their careers when they’ve made their money

Will Jerry and Stephen actually be able to pull off player retention and cash flow for a significant part of the roster and quality players?

This all started at the lock-out and when all claimed that the current ownership block was nothing but a crap load...

Damn, for us fans, I'm hoping that this current group of players buy into direction and the sell on the table.

Because you get to use the last year of their deal as year one of the new contract, saving cap space in the long run. I'll make an example based off yours.

Player X is in the last year of his deal making $2M. He is signed to a 5 year $60M extension at $12M AAV. This extension however is only new money, as he is still owed the 1/$2M remaining on his original deal, making the total deal 6 years and $62M, an AAV of $10.3M, nearly $2M less than his contract. The player is getting the same amount of money, but the team gets an extra $2M a year on their cap sheet.
Exactly .....it allows the team an extra year to pro-rate the signing bonus

Jaylon is the type of guy you want to keep. He had the focus to go through 2 years of rehab basically, after a lot of people said he'd never play without a brace.

The dude is one of the most optimistic people I've ever seen. He never gets in trouble, you don't have to worry about him, and he has the chance to be another legitimate blue-chip player, and the potential to be a monster.

I looked at the numbers a while ago, even after DLaws contracts and expected numbers for other players. We're good.

The reason for talks now, is because he's probably going to have a damn good year, and next year you're either tendering him with a 1st rounder, or you risk a team coughing up a 2nd and offering him a ridiculous contract. A team could still potentially give up a 1st and offer him a deal. A 1st round tender next year is over $5mill guaranteed, and if he has a good year this year and next, who knows how much a young, talented LB costs?

Mosley is 3 years older and just got 5 years / $85million with $40m+ guaranteed, in two years we're probably going to see 90+. Maybe more if Jaylon turns into a beast, which could happen. He'll still be 2 years younger than Mosley is now, when a possible bidding war sparks off in the case of a tender next year.

The cap is going to be fine with a new deal. If you can get him cheaper now, it's smart to do it. You take the possible chance of having to meet an outrageous contract next year or the year after. I don't want to give him up for a 2nd, and he'd be an essential piece immediately so I don't think I'd give him up for a 1st either, unless it was a top 10 pick. But even that's no guarantee, and a Jaylon pro ready is probably a top pick in any draft.

So, you try to work out a deal with him now, instead of getting into a possible bidding war next year which is another year contracts go up, and the possibility that he has a great year. If you throw a 1st round tender on him, you still risk a team gladly giving up a first for a young centerpiece on a defense. We'd probably have to match a contract even with a 1st round tender.

I'd sign him to an extension now too, if he'd accept it. He may not, if I was Jaylon i don't know if I would. Just depends on the amount.

I hope we do get a deal done. I want Jaylon and LVE to man the LB spots for the next 5-6 years (LVE will be longer).

And if we're going to do it, now is the optimal time.

Anyways afaik the articel is wrong. JS will become a RFA after the 2020 season and not after 2019.

He was hurt his first year which we got back as a compensation. 2nd year he sucked but played and his 3rd year was 2018. So 2019 will essentially be his third season on his rookie contract.
A player can't be a restricted free agent after four years in the league.

Under three years experience they are exclusive rights free agents.

At three years they are restricted free agents.

Four years and beyond the are unrestricted free agents.

That first year when he was hurt, did the Cowboys have to pay him that year? Yes they did. But he was not on the active roster for six games so he didn't get credit for that year. This 2019 season will technically be his fourth year but he's only been credited for three. Because you have to spend six weeks on the active roster to be credited for a year. So he will be a restricted free agent after this up coming season.

I said active roster, I guess I should have said available/practice roster just to curve confusion. A player has to on the available/practice roster or six weeks to receive credit for that year.

Jerry and Stephen are determined to extend a bunch of guys who have never gotten beyond the divisional round of the playoffs.

Eat it up folks, keep dreaming, and keep spending your hard earned dollars on the Dallas Cowboys.

He had a great 2019 season, but I'd like to see him do it again before giving out a massive extension to him.
WTH... I missed the 2019 season?
Yeah, you must have.

121 tackles 82 solo
4 sacks
2 forced fumbles
2 fumble recovery
1 TD
Started 16 games and was healthy all season.

Some fans are just impossible to please
Just want to see him do it again. He was average to below average in 2017.
Somethings missing here. How you act like 2018 never happened?
