Delivery Food Tipping

I joined the 21st century tonight and for the first time I ordered food delivery that was not chinese or pizza. When I ordered through Bite Squad I saw they put a tip on there of 20%. I though that the tip went to the delivery driver but even with that I gave the gal what I though was $5 more when she delivered my food. Now thinking about it, I may have under paid her. Was the tip thru the service for teh delivery driver or for the waiter at the restaurant that prepared the food? If it was for the waiter I want to make amends and give the girl that delivered it a little more. If not then I guess I am good. What do you guys do and how do you know?

It was probably either the cook, bartender, or hostess who bagged it up, but either way, the built in tip is probably all for the driver, to make sure they get paid.

That is a built in tip(service fee) from the service. I think the driver gets a part as well the restaurant person who gets it ready. In which case, 20% isn’t enough. A little extra is always good for the deliverer

I was erroneously thinking about it as the restaurant delivering the food, rather than a third party. I don't know if the restaurant pays delivery service, or if the service charges the customer only, but I'm guessing it's the latter, in which case they may have two fees. A delivery fee and a mandatory tip, but I have no intimate knowledge on the subject, so I'm guessing.

they do have a deliver fee as well. it is shown differently and the tip is shown as 20%. I originally thought that tip was for the driver but now wonder if it went to the restaurant.

The restaurant probably just gets the cost of the food, then the service gets the delivery fee, and the driver gets the tip. That's what makes sense to me anyway.

I order via Grubhub and the drivers get the tip I put on the order. (they just hand me the food and leave) I tend to tip 20% like I do in restaurants. When they hand the food to me they generally say with a big smile, thanks for the good tip which makes me think most people do not tip them at that level.

I have no idea about Bite Squad. Never heard of them. I don't think they exist in the Tri-State area.

I don't understand why people wouldn't tip at least as much as a waiter or waitress, who's carrying the food about 30 - 50 feet, as compared to driving it across town. Sure, the waiter or waitress takes the order, etc., but none of what they do compares to dealing with traffic, while putting wear and tear on what's often their personal vehicle, as they try to find someone's house or apartment without being robbed, all before your food gets cold.

Generally, they get paid more than a waiter. Waiters get paid less than minium wage. The delivery service places are different, though.

I honestly don't know how delivery people get paid. Whether they have an hourly rate, or just get paid by the mile, no idea.

Pizza delivery pays like $8/hr. Waiters get something like $2/hr.
Waiters get paid $7.25 / hr
Under federal law, employers can take a tip credit by paying tipped workers, such as servers and bartenders, as low as $2.13 an hour if those workers earn at least the standard minimum wage of $7.25 an hour once their tips are added in.

Yeah, but they are allowed to pay the $2.13 when they factor in tips. Delivery drivers don't rely on tips to get minimum wage.

My brother used to pay $50 a table at high end restaurants just to have the table. He would literally have to pay $250 a night for five tables, but he made way more than that each night.

They also pay for gas and wear and tear on their cars.
Thats my thinking as well. When I order takeout im always generous with the tip, especially if there is a good distance. If Im cheap the tip may not even cover gas. I don't know how most places are, but when I was delivering pizza's as a teenager, I didnt get anything for gas

I remember ordering a pizza once and the guy delivered it in a brand new Audi. I was thinking to myself. Dude, if you're going to deliver pizza, you should look at using an utility car, not a luxury car. Your wages aren't going to cover the wear and tear on a brand new Audi.
