I see so many posters admire players that leave and trash our team. You want to follow a SB winner, fine, that man has earned his respect.

I hated Deion Sanders with a passion, but when he was a Cowboy I loved him. When he took off for the Commanders, I hated him again (I actually did not like him too much his last season with the Boyz). I respected TO while he was with the team, hated him before and after.

Unless a player is absolute elite, like Emmitt Smith, and they leave the team, to me they are them enemy. Point being, this is not college ball, if you are on my team, then you are the man I root for. If you are not on the team, you are the enemy.

Old School - My team rules, KA..
New School - He was such a nice guy.

This is infantile.

In grown up land, the NFL is an entertainment business, and players will change their employers from time to time.

For us it's entertainment. For them it's their career. It's the financial security of their families for decades to come, for which their bodies will be paying a health toll for decades to come.

Good for Murray for cashing in with Philly. Good for Beasley for cashing in with Buffalo. When guys leave and strike a pot of gold, I'm happy for them. They're actual people. They're not little toy soldiers existing only for our amusement.

That's the whole problem. Fans care about teams, they don't care about players. Anyone know what Bruce Carter is doing these days? Or Kevin Burnett? The dark side of sports for athletes is that the fans only love you for what you can do on the field, and when you can't perform any more, you don't even exist to them.

The same fans who scream that a player is "selfish" or a "traitor" for chasing the money at 25 won't even care if that player is alive or dead at 35, so it's up to the athletes themselves to look out for their own long-term best interest. No one else will.

You are just telling on yourself for being an inconsistent fan of players. Sanders and Owens were never players I liked because I knew they were hired guns, just following the money and not guys we drafted and developed into a great player, like Emmitt Smith. If a player I don't like comes to the Cowboys, I'm not going to suddenly like the guy. He still is who he is and I'm still not going to like it. I may like what he does for the team but that's not the same thing. These hired guns don't bleed blue like our drafted guys we develop. I do make an exception sometimes because certain players come around to be true blue blood players... Charles Haley for example.

Fans loving/hating guys for joining/leaving is something I understand, but dont subscribe to. Emotional attachment is something that belongs in amateur sport.

Players are employees following a career path. In many ways they are no different to all of us. Their relationship with their team is the same as the relationship between any employee and a large employer. We all change jobs from time to time to further our careers, earn more money, for family reasons or because we dont like our boss, location etc.

I never hate any player who leaves for any reason.

Old school, which is where I came from, was before FA. Players more often than not played for the same team unless they were released or traded.

Players from different teams, especially division rivals hated each other for the most part. Look at the old Cowboys vs skins rivalry with even coaches like George Allen driving this.

Now players don't have that feeling since they know they could be moving in a couple of years. This kills the whole rivalry thing altogether.

That's why "rivalry" means much more to me when it comes to my alma mater than it does any pro team. College players choose their school and most only play at that school, the one they chose.

Pro players are usually chosen by the team - if a team drafts you they own you, just not as long as they did in the old days. Don't want to play for that team? No problem, go find a job doing something else - that's the "choice" they have (none). Fans who interpret that as some sort of diehard loyalty are kidding themselves.

Rooting for players who don't play for the Cowboys is like eating enough rice cakes to get full. You could do it, but it wouldn't be very satisfying.

If someone leaves to get paid...super. But, I root for the Cowboys. I'm no longer interested in their career.

Very true. Lee Roy Jordan and too tall jones both left the cowboys due Texas schramm take it or leave it deals. Injuries to other lb's forced tex to have to deal with Jordan. But he never got over it and kept lee roy out of the roh. He couldn't fill the void left by too tall and had to give him a better deal. Loyalty works both ways.

Since I have been watching the Cowboys and football in general since 1965 I would say I'm old school. I do respect greatness in the game be it players on the Cowboys or those on other teams. Game day of course Cowboys 1st but growing up I loved seeing guys who were some of the all time greats to play the game and still do.

So is your stance “new old school” or “old new school”?

Seriously, my take is that obviously the Cowboys are my favorites but I also recognize there are lots of good and bad people on all NFL teams. I like our players best when the game is happening but I don’t carry any grudges about anyone after the game is over. It’s a game, not foreign policy.
