How does Zeke's recent incident affect his extension?

Sure.

Let's start with the worst place to invest heavily is RB. It is the most famous position for getting production at a cheap cost. We have even experienced that relatively recently with Murray, McFadden, Morris etc.

And do you know he will? No you don't. History shows it is more likely he won't than he will. So the smart money is to proceed as if he won't.

BTW that ignores the above point. Even if he does make it through a 2nd contract you will have paid top dollar for production that routinely comes at bargain basement rates.

Yes, I do. Because his skills have already diminished. Zeke lacks the elite burst he demonstrated his rookie year. He breaks less long runs, he's less productive per rush and last year he was more banged up than he has been in any of the previous two years. Already he doesn't practice during the week. This is year 3. But you're confident he ages like wine through year 10?

Comparing the aging of QB and RB is embarrassing.

If the window is the next two years why would we want to tie up high dollars in a position where you could get production much cheaper and spread those other dollars to fill additional holes.

Let me ask you is this team better with Iloka and Zeke or Patrick Lindsay and Earl Thomas?

The idea is you get superior play making cheaper at RB so you can pay for more expensive playmaking at other positions that aren't so easily filled.

This is all really quite simple.
You are a broken record and haven't been right in 3 years

Zeke has been awesome and his return on investment has been very high

Give it a break with the Haterade.. we have been over 10m UNDER the cap since we drafted Zeke so he hasn't prevented us from signing anypne..... it is a load of crap and you should stop selling it

What the future holds is up to Zeke but if his next 3 years are as good as these 3 he is on pace for the HoF

Its really short sighted. And bargain basement prices? When was the last time a bargain basement RB came close to 1800 yards from scrimmage?

Smart money would have cut Brady four years ago.

According to Jerry, Zeke's recent incident won't affect his extension in any way, shape or form.

Of course, he also wants to do everything he can to make Zeke look as blameless as possible.

It doesn't affect resigning him at all. We were always going to resign him and I believe that we were always going to add a "good conduct clause" to the new deal. Now we just have more cause for adding that clause to the contract.
good conduct may work for the $$$ part of the contract, but if he's suspended again for 4-6 or more games, the team disruption isn't worth it at any price savings.

let this year play out and see *if* he grows up. go from there.

yet to be determined. BUT, if anything...Dallas will protect itself in any potential extension. I give it a 10% chance he gets dealt. That only happens if the evidence/punishment is damning and affects the team depth chart.

Zeke is what he is...its foolish to expect him to change at this point. We must be aware of this if we extend him. I think that's why we protected ourselves and drafted Pollard then Weber.

Remember he can be banned for life with one more Domestic Violence under the Personal Conduct Policy.

Is that someone we truly want to invest in?

Zeke is an awesome talent . But if he isn’t enough to put us over the top anyway I’m not sure you’d invest with his history. One more DV and he’s gone for good.

He may play under the 5th year option if we don’t sign him. But just a guess that if has another good year he won’t play under the tag. We would probly have to sign him.

Zeke’s Personal Conduct is going to cost him millions. And probably the security with the Cowboys he’d otherwise probably received.

And other teams are going to be suspect as well. He will have to sign for much less that a top RB would ordinarily receive . That’s the price he will pay for his off field behavior.

I wonder how Elliott will perform this season. He's got to move on from this last incident and focus on football, but more importantly, I wonder how he will do being that we drafted another solid RB. It will be interesting. My hopes is that Pollard isn't simply an insurance pick, but an addition to the running game in general.

I disagree. Unless he gets suspended further, there will be other teams who would pay him. He's very young, fresh and is arguably the best RB in the NFL.

Again, IF he gets suspended in the future, then that changes things.

If he has another DV violation he’s suspended for life.

The question I have is why no keeper for him? They had one for Pacman and Dez had one as a condition of employment. Meyer got Elliott's Dad to be his keeper in Columbus and Booger needs one for this guy to wise up.

He's sending the message "he doesn't get it" and to pay a player like that 15M a season and worse, make your offense dependent on him, is really risking a season.

Elliott reminds me of Maverick in "Top Gun" when his CO told him he had to do it better because of his baggage......and he keeps buzzing towers. Elliott has created his own and has put too much light on himself and being right or wrong doesn't really matter. Unless he's saving a kitten up a tree or carrying an old lady out of a burning house, he needs to stay the hell out of the news. It's all about how it looks to the NFL, not necessarily how it really is.

If they're going to extend him, which I think is a huge mistake at 15M+ a year, they better have some protective verbiage in that contract and I don't know how that works with the CBA.

Great post. I agree 100%.

Hopefully he just feels the need for speed and is later for dinner.
