The 1998 NFL Draft: A Look Back at the Epic Ryan Leaf Bust

I have wondered if Leaf could have had a better chance to succeed if they had done things differently. What if he hadn't been drafted in the first round with the expectations that he could save a franchise? What if he had been selected in the third round and then that team had had him understudy for a year behind a veteran QB in the twilight of his career. Maybe it would have been Leaf the chance to mature and then be a very good quarterback.

Best to have put your shovel down than to have dug this turd back up.

Leaf really was just an incredible trainwreck of a human being. When he left the NFL he burglarized people's houses to steal painkillers, multiple times. The best that can be said of him is that he MIGHT have gone straight For Real This Time after he got out of jail in 2014.

I think he had ZERO chance of being anything but a total trainwreck. Being #2 overall and going to a terrible organization probably accelerated things some, but there was only one way it was going to end regardless.

As (WSU) being a rival of the school I root for (UW), you could tell a mile away this was coming. He was an arrogant mental midget in his college days.

Million dollar talent, 10 cent head.

The guy has and had a lot of issues in his life, and most are self inflicted, and he would tell you that.

He’s learned life the hard way, again, self inflicted.

I live in Cougar Country in The Tri-Cities and I totally agree. That season in 1997 was insane with everything he accomplished but there was more than enough stories of him being a piece of trash. The red flags were always there for him flaming out.

A story that I heard is the Colts asked Manning and Leaf this same question: What are you going to do after we draft you? Manning response was I am going to get the playbook and read up on it and if you don’t pick me, I will beat you for the next 15 years. Leaf response is I will probably take a couple of my buddies to Hawaii and relax before the upcoming season. Now I am paraphrasing but I think you get the idea.

I am one of the ones who actually preferred Leaf in that draft. Did not like Manning’s noodle arm. Come on, u too can admit it...

Leaf is a cautionary tale. NFL history is littered with guys like him who had the physical talent to succeed in the NFL but lacked all the intangibles. Playing QB is a whole lot more involved than being able to make all the throws.

Its silly to sit back now and say his failure was predictable.

1998 was one of the wildest and most consequential Drafts of all time. Peyton, Leaf, Moss.....

If you look at everything he did when he got his second and third chances, everything he participated in as soon as he left the nfl...

There was no chance he’d succeed, he didn’t have the head for it. Same as Jamarcus Russell, same as Johnny Manziel.

He was just too arrogant to succeed in the NFL.
I didnt realize arrogance kept one from succeeding in pro sports.

If only someone like Deion Sanders wouldnt have been so arrogant he would have had a better career....lol

sarcasm.......
saying being arrogant will keep you from success in pro sports seems so ridiculous to even mention that. Some of the greatest players in pro sports were also as arrogant as any person you will ever meet.

I should of expanded more then.
A lot of sports players are arrogant, but Leaf IMO had that arrogance/stubbornness that he didn't need to adapt or listen to anyone. And, IMO the QB spot is the #1 hardest spot to play in the NFL.

Deion for example was arrogant, a showboater and admitted to not be a willing tackler for a business decision. But, outside of that he was a shutdown corner who played at a generational level. Became a mercenary, but I don't recall teammates hating him or him lashing out on guys. Any arrogance he had he backed it up with his play. Same with a guy like T.O. Ultimate diva, but when he played, he was an elite receiver who was worth any headaches most of his career.
San Diego quickly learned that Ryan wasn't good enough for any of his BS.

Leaf, lashed out at reporters and teammates. He had a great arm, but that was it. He wasn't willing to humble himself and take the lumps in becoming a successful QB in the NFL. Just having an arm won't cut it, unlike in HS or CFB.
That's why I don't think even going in round 2 or later would of saved him.

He would have never succeed anywhere because he had bad behavior which usually do not last long in the NFL

Maybe that bad behavior could have been kept in check if he was just a backup and had the chance to learn some maturity behind a veteran QB?
