Will Gurley's arthritis up Zeke's asking price?

Cowboys should make Zeke play out his 5th year deal.

Franchise tag him in 2021.

Then let him walk in free agency so that his deal could still yield them a 3rd round comp pick.
That’s not the way to handle the guy. You don’t want a Leveon Bell situation.

Zeke has no leverage to ask for anything. The Cowboys have stood by him when he was in trouble with the league back in 2017 and now again in 2019. He's approaching year 4 of a 5-year contract and he's not at the top of the negotiation totem pole. The Cowboys will franchise him before paying him Gurley money.

Why am I doubting this?
I see a Long-Term Contract coming in the next 14 months.
Most likely sooner.

Can't say. Stephen tends to be reasonable.
I agree that Stephen is fair, although we tend to label him as cheap.

Right now Gurley is the highest paid at $14.375m, then Le'veon at $13.125m followed by David Johnson at $13m. The next highest paid RB is Devonta Freeman at $8.250m. That's quite a drop off in RB salary. I think the Franchise Tag is a little under $10m.

At some point you can't rationalize the cost, no matter how much you want him.

Gurley getting hurt doesn't mean that Zeke gets a larger deal, if anything, it emphasizes the risk on the team's end of guaranteeing $45M.

That being said, I don't think Zeke's going to sign for any less than $15M (it'll probably inflate to $16M by the time we get around paying him next season). David Johnson got $13M at 26, Le'Veon Bell just got $13M at 27 and after a year out of football, and would you really take either of those guys over a 25 year old Zeke?

The Rams knew Todd would have some arthritic problems because of his ACL surgery before they inked his contract. I wonder if this causes Zeke's agent to expect even more money for Zeke when they start their negotiations. And if they do ask for more than Gurley's $15m ($45m guaranteed), will that get SJ thinking more along the Franchise Tag route.

Matey, we might be over thinking this, and you know much I hate to think.
But anyone who takes an offer from Zeke needs to ask for a discount from Zeke because of his proclivity for bad behavior and suspensions.

Ah, but you're over-working it. We don't have to actually think things thru before we post our opinions.

That's the point. Zeke is the engine, but do you commit that much long term money to 1 player in a fairly high risk position?

Zeke can stay out of camp.

We can go 0-2.

Then he gets paid.

Or we can pay him and we go 2-0.

See Emmitt in 1993.
