The DL is very overcrowded here in Dallas. Reports out of camp say that Hyder looks great. He did have himself a season a couple years ago in Detroit. One or 2 of the following are not going to be on this team unless the injury bug thins the herd...

Crawford, Woods, Taco, Armstrong, Covington, and Gregory.

I added Gregory because we just don’t know. If the league suspends him for the season and these other guys play well (Taco/Armstrong/Hyder), how can you continue to carry him?

A surprise is lurking here for sure.

What say you?
Think about this for a minute:

Limbo
Tyrone Crawford DT/DE (7 starts at DE, 8 starts at DT in 2018): Cost 7M

Existing Players (not the full list)
M.Collins DT (3-tech): Starter if healthy.
A.Wood DT (1-tech): Starter
DLaw LDE: Starter.
Taco DE: Starter

New Players
Hyder DE/DT: Cost 1M (has ability to play snaps at DT)
Covington DT (1-tech/3-tech): Cost 1.7M
Trysten Hill DT (3-tech): Rookie Contract
Robert Quinn RDE: Signed to be the starter

If all DL are healthy:
3-tech: Collins / Hill
1-tech: Woods (backup Covington)
LDE: DLaw
RDE: Quinn / Big DE

Notice:
Hyder is a big DE.
Taco is a big DE.
Crawford is a big DE or 3-tech DT.
Covington ideal as a 4th DT on game day.
Can backup both 1-tech and 3-tech.

Crawford's Status
Not projected to start if others are healthy.
Can't backup the 1-tech spot.
Cost is 7M.
That seems untenable if not starting.
Definitely untenable if not the 3rd DE or 3rd DT.

Crawford is primarily competing with:
Hyder at DE.
An injury to Collins.
Covington as depth at DT.

I know that Marinelli loves Crawford; however...
Stephen Jones loves cap space.

Gregory creates serious issues when it comes to deciding who to keep and how to allocate the 53. I’m not sure he is worth the trouble.
It's an ideal situation if Gregory returns during the season.

That makes the cut to 53 easier but roster spots always open up during the season.

They're not forced to keep him if he returns during the season, but it's a nice option, especially late in the season.

We carry 10. I see no problems with this:

DE
D. Lawrence
R. Quinn
T. Charlton
D. Armstrong
K. Hyder
[Gregory susp. so no roster spot taken up; Joe Jackson to practice squad]

DT
M. Collins
A. Woods (1T)
T. Crawford (we are not cutting him this year, we don't need his cap space until next)
T. Hill
C. Covington (1T)
[D. Wise to practice squad]

I've been sticking up for Crawford for quite awhile. He doesn't get the flashy stats, but he consistently ranks right up there with the production stats like pressures, etc. Now that his salary isn't near as insanely overblown, I'm beginning to see the end for him as a Cowboy getting closer.

Question on Taco - is his rookie salary guaranteed or can they just cut him?

Mick Shots:

Strength has always been a missing ingredient for 2017 first-round pick Taco Charlton, but if looks aren’t deceiving, Taco appears to have hit the weights, having grown a chest and arms to be proud of …

Gregory ain’t going anywhere, those that count love him plus having God given talent that he has certainly provides a longer leash. He smokes weed, the whole freaking works is smoking weed and the nfl is about 25 years late to the party.

Imo, Crawford and Gregory are in the most precarious positions. Crawford won't get any better. Gregory can't be counted on.

I thought his play really dipped @ the end of last season....worst being that Rams playoff loss. Then throw in the off season trouble...wouldn't shock me to see him get the heave ho.

As for Gregory....feels like he's already hit his ceiling.....and it wasn't that great. Not sure how you continue to hold out hope that he's gonna get it together.

The team does not manage the cap based on a "don't need cap space this year" thought process.

Extra cap space rolls over.

They manage based on value/need vs cost.

The front office will likely tell the coaches he only stays if he's going to be top 5 of all DL in snaps played. If he projects to 4th DE or 4th DT then he won't stay at 7M.

Let's see how this breaks down:

-Roster locks: DLaw, Quinn, Maliek Collins, Woods, Hill
-90% chance they make it: Crawford (would be a lock if not for salary), Armstrong (costing us pennies on a 4th round rookie deal, second year potential)

So that's 7 spots, and last year we carried 10 DL, so I'm guessing we have room for 3 more.

-Guys fighting for spots: Hyder, Taco, Covington, Joe Jackson, Daniel Wise
-Gregory is suspended and so doesn't take up a roster spot.

Pretty easy to see how this will work out IMO. Hyder, Taco, and Covington take up the last 3 roster spots, and the rookies go to the PS.

Dez was cut for his cost v. productivity and his attitude with his teammates on and off the field. Neither of those things is really an issue with Crawford.
You referenced snap count as the reason he would not get cut.

I'm not against Crawford personally. He has managed to play through injury and be available at DE and DT when injuries to other players repeatedly forced him to move between positions.

Last season he was transported to the hospital after a head/neck injury in a game but was back starting the next week.

Nevertheless whether by design or coincidence, the combination of players they added is exactly what a team would do if they had made replacing him a priority.
Bigger/quicker 3-tech: Hill
Big DE to play base with ability to play DT: Hyder
Good depth DT: Covington
Starting RDE: Quinn

I referenced snap count for a team player whose attitude the club loves and who’s been productive consistently—in response to a post that suggested he might be let go because he wants expensive and wasn’t a ‘starter’. The purpose of bringing his snaps into it was to illustrate he’s a guy they rely on heavily.

Snaps, for Dez, weren’t the issue because he was a starter to begin with and he was cut for other obvious reasons that don’t apply in Crawford’s case. So the comparison wasn’t relevant.

Edit: I do think this is Crawford’s last season, fwiw.
