Marinelli wants guys who get penetration. Rushmen, not rundefensemen. We've finally got a truly capable 1tech. We still have Collins, who played 1tech for us. I don't see Marinelli spending another roster spot on a rundefenseman. And less so on a veteran 1 year rental than maybe Ross.

I believe Covington is a little of both. During his time with the Texans, he was getting into the backfield and making plays. I think he's an upgrade to the Ross and Reid types that we've kept on this roster the past few years, again more in the Terrell McClain territory, and McClain played well for us as a combination 1-tech and 3-tech.

We've tried using Collins at 1-tech and he didn't handle the role well. Injuries have limited him also as a 3-tech, so he's got to stay healthy to retain a spot. I don't know if he's any better than Covington even when he's healthy. He's been good at times but not spectacular.

Ideally, Hill comes on as a 3-tech who is both a consistent pass rusher and run-stopper, but since it may take him a while to get there (if he does), we need players like Covington.

At 7 mil a year Crawford is a versatile player that has been able to stay healthy. Thats a bargain and Im pretty sure he will make the roster.

I don't think it's a bargain, but I do think he'll make the roster. The likelihood of a bunch of late-round picks, cheap FAs and UDFAs is not that high.

I'm not married to any of these guys and I hope the front office isn't either. Forget about name recognition or even projections, when the training camp dust settles give me the guys who kicked ***.
There will always be injuries, busts, suspensions, and pickups from other team's cuts. Hard to say how it shakes out. Seems like there will always be too many initially, and then, we wind up keeping guys that would have been cut. Gregory seems to be the question mark around who might stay or not.

The fundamentalist always believe in investing in the trenches, that after all where the game is played, its point 1 or origin, center snaps the ball...
Maybe Im selfish, and I sure I am to a degree, but I really enjoy the direction this roster is going thanks to the talent evaluations directly with McClay,, that man is important.
That's because teams w/ strong trenches keep appearing in the super bowls.

Maybe Covington is better than his market value in the league would indicate. Could be. I think Hyder is.

But Ross, who we have the rights to this year and next for peanuts, likely hasn't reached his peak. Given their different contract statuses, Covington will have to be significantly better than Ross to get the nod over him. Covington is our usual el cheapo free agent pick up used as insurance against other players with a future with the team not being able to handle the load.

Given Collins' injuries, it's hard to say how well he can play 1tech or 3tech when healthy, besides better than when injured. I think he's got upside from the previous two injured years, and there's a good chance we offer him a moderate extension before the season starts.

Crawford, Collins, Hill, Woods. That's 4 already. That may be all we keep at DT.

With our overabundance of DEs, Crawford probably gets primarily used at DT for pass rush, and we're more likely to go long at DE than DT. If Crawford starts the season suspended, we may end up keeping a DT on the roster at season start who is scheduled to be cut when Crawford comes back. If it's Covington or Ross, the difference in money is paid for just a couple of games, instead of the entire season, and Ross is cheaper.

I grant your point on Quinn on run defense. I read last night Marinelli praising Quinn's run defense. That makes him a credible starting RDE in the base.

You're showing Covington with a very limited role. I don't think it's enough. He's the guy on the bubble. Good chance Ross bumps him.
I think Covington is better than you think, and that Ross is gone.

It's an ideal situation if Gregory returns during the season.

That makes the cut to 53 easier but roster spots always open up during the season.

They're not forced to keep him if he returns during the season, but it's a nice option, especially late in the season.

That could certainly be the way it plays out. But let’s suppose Gregory comes off of suspension and bumps a player off the 53. Who do you cut? Naturally you would think it may be a DL, but if Gregory gets suspended again it could really pose a problem for the team.

I honestly wonder if we had Covington against LA if we still would have given up 270 yards rushing?
I kinda think no.
Even if we held them to around 150 yards rushing I think we might have won that game, considering how bad Goff was playing at the time.

Bet You Didn’t Know: Hyder went to a place many of these Cowboys have never been – Valley Ranch. Before the 2014 draft, Hyder was one of the Cowboys’ 30 visits and arrived at Valley Ranch, the previous team headquarters for a one-day visit. Hyder went undrafted in 2014 and spent his rookie year on the Jets’ practice squad.

Quotable: “That’s home for me. It’s more natural for me - playing defensive end. I get to use my athletic ability and get on the edge and r usher the passer. That’s what I’m looking forward to doing, more than just being right on the nose.” -Kerry Hyder (on playing defensive end instead of tackle)

Role/Roster Chances:
The defensive line is not easy to determine, especially for Week 1, considering that Randy Gregory is facing a suspension, DeMarcus Lawrence is coming off surgery and Tyrone Crawford’s status is uncertain. So a player like Hyder, who has position flex and experience should be able to make things interesting, depending how he performs in training camp and preseason games. The Cowboys did draft Joe Jackson and Jalen Jelks and like what they’ve seen from Daniel Wise, so there are some youngsters who could force their way in as well. But if Hyder can become the pass-rusher he was just a few years back, it’ll be hard keeping him off the roster.

Could happen. Barring injury, one or the other is likely gone once Crawford returns from suspension. But Ross still has a number of structural advantages over Covington in their competition.

The DL is very overcrowded here in Dallas. Reports out of camp say that Hyder looks great. He did have himself a season a couple years ago in Detroit. One or 2 of the following are not going to be on this team unless the injury bug thins the herd...

Crawford, Woods, Taco, Armstrong, Covington, and Gregory.

I added Gregory because we just don’t know. If the league suspends him for the season and these other guys play well (Taco/Armstrong/Hyder), how can you continue to carry him?

A surprise is lurking here for sure.

What say you?

Nothin wrong with depth brudda. Remember the injury bug will bite someone on the ***

I say, let's see it in pads. I also say the fact that he had the strong season in 2016 gives me hope, but an Achilles injury is awful hard to recover from.

I think Taco will be traded for a conditional 6th or 7th round pick.....Hyder had a down season last year, in Detroit, I think because he played DE in a 3-4 and he is a 4-3 DE.

wouldn't surprise me to cut ties with Crawford if the other ones show a lot of promise. Crawford has position flexibility, but is not great at neither...he is a coaches favorite.

Gregory....seems like his name comes up every year. his talent is undeniable...but so is his headache....will he be traded? or go the route of Irvin?.....

They carried Lance Lenoir on the 53 the 2nd half of the season as one of 7 WRs.

Roster spots are easier to find during the season than on cut day.
