What 5 make up the best 5if everyone is healthy week 1? I think it is Smith Fred Looney Martin Collins. I could see Looney being traded to a team looking to upgrade or for an injury replacement. If Looney is traded I think Smith McGovern Fred Martin Collins.

For this year

Tyron
CWill
Fred
Zack
Collins

I think that's the lineup the team would most like to have.

My own preference would be Smith-McGovern-Frederick-Martin-Williams, but I think the team would prefer to give the rookie a year to adjust and to give Collins the best opportunity to have a career year and earn that next big contract.

McGovern is too good not to start and he will show you that in camp.

There's a real possibility that Williams moves to RT as early as next season and your swing man could be Mitch Hyatt.

Staring 5 is easy:
2019: Smith Williams Fred Zack Collins
2020: Smith McGovern Fred Zack Williams

Hopefully we can keep all 3 back ups for 2 more seasons:
Flemming Su'a-Filo Looney

The problem is this year do they keep 9? Because keeping Su'a-Filo gives them better depth than McGovern who if called upon right now, is probably not ready to play meaningful minutes. He needs a year to learn and get stronger. I highly doubt they could sneak him to the PS so what do you do? Roll the dice cut Su'a-Filo and pray for no injuries?

PS: Redman

That should be the plan...but who knows.

I still don't see this OL reaching its full potential with La'el playing RT instead of LG. He's better at RT than he gets credit for, but physically, he could have been a dominant LG.

I think there's a better chance that McGovern is ready to start than there is him needing an entire season to develop.

But there's absolutely no way he makes it to the PS. Looney can play G, if you need to protect McGovern, and any team would struggle if 2 of their 3 starting C/G went down.

fred is a center only IMO. he would be diminished as a guard. this combination weakens the LG and center position. IMO

Smith Collins Fred Martin Williams

I think Collins is better suited at guard. he is more of a mauler and requires less technique than a RT. Williams is lighter on his feet and has good technique but less strong. IMO guard needs more strength anyway going up against DTs, vs. DEs who have more speed. I wanted to see this last year. but we probably will have to wait until next year and have

Smith McGovern Fred Martin Williams

Smith, CWill, Fred, Martin, Collins.
Until otherwise shown in TC, this is it.

Not buying the Hyatt hype, he will be on the PS, and it is a fantasy for those thinking CWill will play RT over Collins.

For 2020, I still say there may be a chance Martin kicks out to RT and McGovern plays RG as much as CWill moving out to RT, and McGovern playing LG.
Probably not much of a possibility that Martin move to RT, but just throwing it out there.
A lot will spend on how CWill does at LG also.

I think if Collins is performing well at rt, we should attempt to trade him rather than just see him leave in free agency. he's going to get a big check somewhere. just not here. we have too many other needs in terms or resigning players. and we've drafted wisely just for such a contingency.

I believe we have a Superbowl talented roster. I would not trade away excellent proven back up players at any position much less the OL. Freddie at his best is the best center in the NFL; doesnt make sense to put him at a position that he would not have a chance to reach his full potential...especially after taking a season off.

Keep in mind that when Collins gets that "big check", the Cowboys will get a significant comp pick the following year. If the contract is big enough, it could be a third round comp pick. Then you would have to weigh what you could get by trading him this year and not having him at all, vs having him this season and letting him leave in free agency next year.

I might consider making a trade for a player, if for instance the safety candidates don't step up, but I sure wouldn't do it for some promissory 2020 draft pick that does nothing for the team today.
