I still say only keep 3 TE's, but if they insist as usual to keep 4, this may open a roster spot up for a 7th WR for a week to get more evaluation though they should already know everything they need to know by this point.
Or keep an extra DL, DB.

I don't think they need to keep 3 QB's or 4 TE's, or 7 LB's. Therefore creating other roster spots for better players even if they are inactive most of the time.

The Cowboys like Rico so much they're agreeing to let Witten catch 4 yard passes on 3rd and 6 again.

The suspension has nothing to do with Rico's minimal impact.

I'm guessing Rico is one TE injury from making the team this season. So, it could happen.

I don't think it's any secret that this is the make-or-break preseason for Gathers. I think the odds are greatly stacked against him, especially with Witten coming back. He already was lagging behind the other tight ends. He's fourth in the line for snaps, so he's got to make an impression in the limited number he receives. Making an impression means he has to absolutely be assignment sound while making the kind of plays we've seen from him at times.

The suspension means he's going to have to do that to the extent that he's worth keeping despite potentially more problems down the road. That sets a high bar that I don't think Gathers will be able to reach. He wasn't likely to make the team before the suspension.

The extra week is great if they need to move a player to IR.

Players must be on the initial 53 after cuts before being moved to IR in order to be eligible to return.

Last season they wanted to move DL Datone Jones to IR after the initial cuts then re-sign DT Price; however Price was claimed.

In general even just 1 week with an extra roster spot is very helpful because they know who they've been able to retain and possible acquire after the cuts.

I find it comical how fans (not you) love to say it's past time to cut a player like Rico as if he's done some terrible injustice.

In reality, he has progressed at about on the pace that should have been expected of a player that didn't play college football.

Jermey Parnell became the Swing Tackle in his 4th season after being a college basketball player.

I'm not saying he'll make the team, but it was highly unlikely that he was ever going to play in the regular season before 2018.

The 2018 season was basically the equivalent of his rookie season and the 1st season he played any regular season snaps.

The 2 previous seasons were the replacement for playing college football.

He still has a chance at a decent NFL career somewhere; however,
he needs to show this pre-season that he can execute plays without
excessive mental mistakes.

It was Dak Prescott, that threw Jason Witten his first-ever playoff touchdown catch. I'm thinking Jason's going to be a red zone threat this season. I know he hasn't been in the past but that's my foresight

Then suspension has no effect.

By the end of preseason either he has proved worth of a spot on the 53 or he hasn't.

A lot of fans have unrealistic expectations of players. (I'm sure we all do to some extent.) I think it comes from entitlement and the desire for instant gratification. Football just isn't a cookie-cutter game, even players who played four seasons of college football can take a while to adjust to the NFL.

I'm not down on Rico (other than the suspension). The odds were against him, which is why he was taken so late in the draft. Frankly, I'm still hoping that a 6-6, 280-pound player can become an asset at the position. He just doesn't have much more time to do it.

First two years I wanted to keep Rico, but after that I was perfectly fine letting him go. This year the WR crop is so deep that if Rico continues to do what he's done it would be criminal to keep him.

Helman had the right idea that this probably helps Rico make the 53. Maximal team health is week 1. That's the worst time to be fighting for the last roster spot.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - there is an upside to having some guys start the season suspended. We retain the rights to more players on final cuts that way. And bottom of the roster development players are exactly the players you want to get suspended in that way, because we're not missing them on game day.
