Cowboys should sign Eric Berry - After 1st game of season

For vested veterans, their salary becomes guaranteed if they are on the roster for the 1st game of the season. But if signed after week 1, their salary becomes a week-to-week thing, with none of it guaranteed. Given Eric Berry's health issues, and the fact that he's only played 3 games in the last 2 seasons, he's an ideal candidate to sign AFTER week 1 is over. The Cowboys could potentially get an All-Pro safety to upgrade the position, but at the same time, protect themselves if Berry isn't able to play.

The other upside is that if Berry has an outstanding year, and hits the free agent market again in 2020, the Cowboys would be in line to get draft pick compensation if he signs with another team. But, under no circumstances should the Cowboys sign Berry before the end of Week 1.

in before "we like our guys"

seriously though, Berry's camp will know this too - he doesn't have much leverage but he does have some (being a former pro-bowler)

No question pre-injury Berry would have been a big upgrade. Can he even play any more?

Camp starts in 3 weeks across the league and he is still unsigned. That tells me something.

Either he can't play any more or he wants a bunch of money like Dez did. It's a risky move no team want any part of.

Actually, I think the reason he has signed is exactly OP reasoning for the thread. No team wanna get lock into a deal with him coz age, health and $$$ but signing him AFTER first game you can at least cut him anytime with min impact.

Watch...a dozen teams will step up after game 1.

If he is not signed by now he won't be. Until injuries start taking effect about mid season and some team needs help.
Hopefully that is not us.

We signed Iloka, and at this point, he is better than Berry would be.

ALL teams like their guys at this point also. It just is not us.

I'd rather throw a mid to late round pick in 2020 in this Wednesday's supplementary draft on Jalen Thompson....

I agree about Berry wanting to get paid. I think there’s as much chance he doesn’t get what he wants and retires.

Although I agree with you on lIoka is better at this point but I don't think he's guaranteed a spot on this roster with his contract

I’d much rather sign him to a modest 1 year $3-4 million deal now and get to see him play in camp and preseason games. If he’s not better than the current guys, he can be cut. That seems better to me than waiting and hoping he can be good without camp and having to learn the defense in the fly in real games. I’d rather have my team set and fully ready to go week 1 than play games with the rules for a few dollars in savings.

I don't know why he's still available exactly, whether he's still injured or its something else, but in my opinion there will be a 0% chance Eric Berry is still a free agent after cut day.

I can't believe this guy has so many people that still believe in him..give it a rest..he's done

Wanting Dallas to sign him and see what he has left in camp and preseason games doesn’t mean you believe in him. It simply means you want the team to get better safety play any way it can. If he is really done, that will be apparent and he can be cut.

If we want him, we have cap room to sign him before week 1. We don’t need to play games like this. Also, I doubt that he doesn’t have a job by week 1.

if we want him and think he can be more productive than what we have, sign him and move on.

the waiting game assumes no one gets hurt during the pre-season and picks him up off the "what about me" pile.

Dallas Cowboys predicted to land safety Eric Berry

by Randy Gurzi2 days ago

The Dallas Cowboys met with safety Eric Berry earlier this offseason but no deal was met. He still remains without a team but could sign closer to training camp
Back in March, the Dallas Cowboys brought in former Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry for a free agent visit. After talking with the team and taking a physical, Berry left without a deal and things have been quiet for him since.

Two factors seem to be keeping Berry from signing — one being his health and the other being his asking price. After playing in just three games over the past two years, teams are understandably concerned about the 30-year old safety’s health.

As for his asking price, it’s said he’s still wanting to make a lot of money this season rather than sign a one-year prove-it deal, which is what the Cowboys specialize in offering.
